: Another Slider Question
Mike330R 04-30-2008, 09:16 PM I have read all threads that delt with sliders here in the Chevy section and got some good info but still have questions.
I want to build sliders with built in steps/nerfs.
Round tube off of the frame to a 2x3 then nerfs welded to the 2x3.
The issue is the frame does not hang below the body so I could not have the tubes off the frame go strait (parallel to the ground) to the 2x3. Looks like the only option is to have these tubes angled down at 30 or so degrees then connct to the 2x3. Doing it this way I don't think the slider would be strong enough to hold the weight of the truck if it needed to on the trail. How can I brace the slider to be strong? I figure adding some supports from the tubing off the frame to somewhere would do the trick, but where? Only thing there is the body, nothing stout enough.
here's a few pic's:

For the nerf part of it I was considering buying some from Blazen Off-road (since I don't have a bender) and weld them to the 2x3:

Anther option is to buy something like these from trail gear ($135 a set!), and have them not weld the tubes that woudl attach to the frame and I could have it welded at the angles I need to the frame. But they'd still need better support.

What are my options? I don't want to cut the body below the doors and weld in 2x3 there.
Thanks for any suggestions!
RC-MAN 04-30-2008, 09:36 PM WORK GREAT bought the same one from trail gear, only prob is tubing they send will not reach frame rail may have to get some more dom and notch it to reach your frame, but with cost in mind and time this is cheap!!!!!

Mike330R 04-30-2008, 09:53 PM How much longer do they need to be?
Are yours angled down to clear the body?
Are they strong enough without support?
Did yu weld anything to the other side of the frame or is it needed?
positrack@earthlink. 05-01-2008, 09:23 PM I find it hard to believe those sliders, T-welded to the frame unreinforced like they are, will hold all or even a decent portion of the weight of the rig. Not trying to flame, and $135/set is a hell of a deal, but I just think you're going to have to brace those up or they are just going to push up into the rockers if you drive anything like I do... Needs triangulation!:flipoff2: The sliders are a long way from the frame, and there is a LOT of leverage there. Especially with the weight of a fullsize sitting on them.
I would've put at least 1 decent triangular gusset above each tube (2/tube, each at a 45* angle to the floorboard would be even better), and then welded that to some plate and bolted the assembly to the frame.
BTW, don't complain, you guys have got it easy; try doing this with dual saddle tanks while integrating skid plates w/o killing ground clearance. I haven't really got it figured out yet...

rcurrier44 05-02-2008, 11:16 AM It works best to tie them into your cage...

Those look pretty nice, but I'd rather tie them into the frame (or cage) than rely completely on the body. I imagine those would take quite a bit of abuse though. Of course, the body mount frames that they bolt to are mostly rusted off of my old bucket.:shaking: They should come with a warning, "not for sale or use on rustbelt vehicles."
Mike330R 05-02-2008, 08:50 PM I got the ones from trail gear today. They will extend past the cab some.
Hope to get them mounted this weekend.
Mike330R 05-03-2008, 09:34 PM Got these started today. Not much room for triangulation

positrack@earthlink. 05-03-2008, 10:37 PM Looks nice. I like the way you're doing 'em, but I still say you ought to add a triangular gusset (or two like this \ / ) above each tube to stiffen 'em up. It wouldn't be hard and you've got plenty of room there. JMHO.
Mike330R 05-03-2008, 11:33 PM We did add some to the two rear tubes. Will add pic's soon.
Mike330R 05-07-2008, 08:53 PM Here's one step finished. Wasn't room for a triangle on the front bad. Hope to have the other finished in a couple weeks. I am working on the bed right now.

Mine are on my rig just like that, my frame is a little wider and they are bent a little but the rockers are still in good shape and my outer tube on the passenger has a very sharp unintentional bend under the passenger door.
It will work, though I agree a gusset or another set of runners like you put on towards the top of the frame are a nice addition.

Well, regardless, they're better than my sliders. Mine are made out of sheet metal and are filled with gasoline... :D:shaking:
Mike-
Lookin' NICE man! Well done!:beer:
Those look like they'll take a pretty decent pounding. :smokin:
