: 4.3 vortec + 4L60e = transfer case options..?
jjdeneen918 05-01-2008, 10:01 AM Ok, I bought a 1994 4.3 vortec engine. It came out of a GMC Jimmy 2-wheel drive.
That year had the 4L60e transmission. For smog purposes I need to stay with that transmission. And for my swap I need to get a t-case that drops to the passenger side front differential....
I have been doing research and it looks like GM has a specific part number for that year transmission. Q1: can I only use that year transmission, because that would really limit the number of available trans out there and probably harder to find.....
Next, Q2:I did find an 1994 Oldsmobile Bravada 4x4 at the junk yard. It has the same 4.3 vortec and 4L60e trans (case stamp M30). But it has a Borg Warner 4472 t-case. Can i toss that t-case and directly bolt-on a different t-case?
Q3:What are my options for t-cases...? Preferably a straight bolt-on option without $500 adapter plates.....

Use the bravada transmission because you can use the transmission and adapter and bolt on one of the NP208 or NP241 transfer cases but you will need a VSS to back the trans shift.
But, I would look for a 700r4. The smoggers will not know the difference since it looks the same as all the other 4l60e's. And you won't need a VSS to make it shift like a 4l60e. Just a TV cable.
VSS info and inline sensors.

jjdeneen918 05-01-2008, 10:38 AM Thanks for the reply. I'm in CA and planning on putting this into my Toyota truck. Which means i need to have it inspected by a state smog refeere (aka smog Nazi). Im sure he will notice the difference in the transmissions. It not just some random smog station i need to go to.
So do u think the transmission on the Oldsmobile will have the same output shaft as other 4L60e's that weren't set-up for Borg Warner stuff? I'm assuming GM made that stuff pretty standard and universal, but not sure.
I'm trying to do this on a budget and avoid the astronomical expenses of after market adapter parts. My buddy has an NP205 t-case he is donating to the project.
Will a NP205 t-case be a direct bolt-on to a 1994 4L60e trans...?

Unl
Will a NP205 t-case be a direct bolt-on to a 1994 4L60e trans...?The bravada trans should work and have the correct adapter with a 27 spline out put shaft.
The NP205 will work with the correct adapter. http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=653713&highlight=Np205
cuatroxcuatro 05-01-2008, 11:37 AM Or you could use your Toyota tcase with and Advance Adapter. But like you said they aren´t cheap.
jjdeneen918 05-01-2008, 12:23 PM Thanks again for the quick replies. I'm getting my engine back from the machine shop tomorrow and will start to reassemble it and get everything else ready.
So the NP205 is not a direct bolt-on t-case either, grr....
Yeah i guess I'm just trying to figure out what will bolt onto the 94 4L60e that has a passenger side axle/diff setup.
I was under the impression the computer reads the VSS of the transmission output shaft, so that should already be there. and if I put whatever t-case on it that fits nothing else should matter. yes, no, maybe?
thanks again.

thanks again. No, the stock location on 4x4's is in the transfer case were the speedo cable goes on earlier transfercases.
They sell inline ones as well that will work. But, if you can locate a NP241 pass with VSS. It should solve your problems.
They came in 89-91 burbin's and fullsize blazers.
abig84 05-01-2008, 01:54 PM i got the same set up under my 93 s10 blazer. im just running a np208 out of fullsize blazer with the 700r4 adapter. works fine so far.
but im having a issue with it not shifting out of first now. might have something to do with the sensor that was in the other transfercase but havent got to checking it out yet
jjdeneen918 05-01-2008, 02:58 PM OK, dang, to clarify.....my buddy has a NP205 but thats not whats he is donating to me, sorry for the confusion. I just got off the phone with him.
He has an NP241 out of a 89 Chevy Suburban that was bolted to a 700R4. Thats the one I'm getting from him.
It looks like the Olds Bravada 4L60E trans I'm thinking of getting has the 6-bolt tail housing.
Will the NP241 bolt directly to the 4L60E, or is there some type of adapter.
Note: the 700R4 out of the suburban had a 4-bolt flange and there was an adapter connecting it to the 6-bolt t-case.
So is that all I should need...? and sorry again for the NP205 confusion....

So is that all I should need...? and sorry again for the NP205 confusion....Get the bravadas adapter with the transmission as well. The NP241 will bolt right up to it. If you don't have it any late model 4x4 round adapter behind a 4l60 should work. The trans adapter should be 6 bolt on both sides.
bggrnchvy 05-01-2008, 06:22 PM The 88-89 case will probably be mech speedo. Late 89's had VSS, but few and 90-91.
They all (88-91) used the passenger drop 241 though and you could simply replace the plastic sppedo gear for a tone ring (they are a direct swap) and drill and tap the mech speedo housing (it's a simple removable part for ease of machining) for the VSS sensor. The sensor however is a $100 part IIRC.
jjdeneen918 05-04-2008, 10:28 AM Ok, I went out to the junk yard and pulled the 4L60e out of the Bravada.
It had a rear nose cone that had 4 interior bolts connecting the adapter to the transfer case (you could only them after the t-case was off).
The adapter went from the 4-bolt to a 5-bolt pattern on the borg warner. So I tossed that adapter and am using the one on my NP241.
It looks like it will work out smoothly.
Next question: How can I tell if my t-case has the Vss sensor or the mech. speedo? (There are electronic connectors going to the t-case)
2nd question: Is there some way to get the t-case to mate to the transmission so the output shaft is not facing directly towards the ground? like kinda sideways, just for ground clearance purposes....

For the VSS it will have a sensor in the tail of the transfer case were the speedo out put is most times.
You can rotate it up a bolt hole or get a reclocking ring.
SouthernK5 05-05-2008, 04:25 PM '89 241's were mechanical speedo, and '90 and '91 were electric speedo.
as mentioned, clocking ring will allow you to adjust the output for more clearance
scouthead 05-06-2008, 05:19 PM Hey you queer... Your 241 has a mechanical speedo... it also has a vehicle speed sensor... the V.S.S is always located behind the last gear reduction in the power train (in a 2x2 there's no low range transfer gear, so they put the v.s.s in the tranny. we'll just extend the wiring a foot or so and plug it right into the 241). We can't leave the V.s.s plugged into the tranny because when you shift into low range, the computer won't know what the actual speed of the truck is anymore... that could affect all kinds of things: torque converter lockup / shift points/ all kinds of crap.
The 241 you have has only 2 electrical conections. One is the 4WD indicator switch for an idiot light on the dash, if you should want one, and the other is the V.S.S.
