My wifes coworker has a 2000 TJ, 6cyl, 5speed, 4x4, 21k miles. Bone stock, never been off road.
She has a stange tranny noise during shutdown - sounds like loud clunking and grinding coming from inside the tranny. I have isolated it to the front porition of the tranny. You can only hear it during shut down, and it is loud. Did a search, checked the motor mounts, xfer case mount, exhaust, everything.
Told her to take it to the dealer as it is still under warrentee. Dealer tells her that is normal. The 'expert' tech said it is okay and that all jeeps with 20k+ miles will sound like that. Sounds to me like they are trying to feed her a line of crap. Or is this a normal sound???
Seen many jeeps before and never heard that noise before.
Thanks

2000 was the first year of the NV3550 tranny, and it's pretty common that they make a lot of noise. My 00's tranny would pop out of first alot, but was quiet. So they replaced it with one that shifts fine but sounds like a diesel engine when in neutral with the clutch out . There's a service bulletin out about the noise, but from what I hear, it doesn't work . I stopped worrying about mine making noise, and it's been fine. Then again, I only have 17,000 miles on the thing, so I can't speak of long term durability yet :D

Yep, what Welby said, it's normal, mine has been doing it since I brought it home 2 years ago. If it ever starts popping outta gear, that's when I'll worry.
