Does anyone know what ratios the elusive XJ 44 had?

I'v pulled and sold a few XJ 44's with 3:07's from a manual shift XJ. One was even a 2wd model.

Also found an XJ 44 with 4:09's once, believe to be dealer installed or special ordered factory.

Bet it came out of a 4banger, I've heard of this a couple of times.

No, an 87 with non HO 4.0,AW4. This XJ had all the stock goodies, Skids, hooks, etc. Also had a Borla exhaust.

A fellow NAXJA-NAC member is currently running it. Also had a tracklock.

Our "in NJ" member has the 4:09 44 and matching front axle from this XJ.

Hokay, now I gotcha...

Hmmm...... have to give "in NJ" some grief out in Moab if he's running a 44 with only 3" of lift.... the ratio is pretty good for him, he's another stickshifter.

Right on Chris! No complains here with 35 inch tires. Oh, and it came with 3.54:1 gears, I regeared to 4.10

Probably not a lot of people running spare shafts with these. Not a lot of breakage with them. If spare shafts were wanted, you could cut down some stock shafts from something larger If I found an XJ 44 in a junk yard, I wouldn't take the shafts just for spares, it's worth more whole. Maybe waggy shafts could be modified to be used as spares?? I have a 44 from an International Travelall. The shafts are wide enough to be cut down and used as spares, so look for something wide. Dutchman, here in Portland, OR, will narrow and respline shafts for about $60/pair.

The other option, would be go alloy now, and carry the stockers as spares. The price of these alloy shafts are coming down, so not a bad (or expensive) option.

I'v never heard of anyone breaking a 44 shaft on an XJ, then again most are running 35's max. There are a few who run taller, but with the scarcity of these 44's most who ride a lil higher are installing 9's and 60's.

Agree with Willis on keeping the axle assembly complete, just too valuable as a bolt in to steal shafts and leave the rest for the scrap man. And with the cancelation of FF conversion for this axle you cant find a buyer for the housing/carrier alone. Been there...

Spares run about $300 for these shafts iirc. Getting donors and having Dutchman do their thing certainly sounds reasonable...now to find what we can use as donors and get the right 4.5 bolt pattern.

Everytime i find a few XJ 44's i plan to keep one "just in case" but someone always waves some cash in my nose and the Mrs makes me sell em. :(

Oh, and Jeff. "NJ" is taller now...a regular Big Dawg!! :D
