First off this is my boss's Jeep. I drive a 77 & 72 Bronco so I'm not to up on the Jeep drive train. It is stock I believe, 3 speed bolted up to a 304. What is it?

Next, the reason we took it off, it would make a terrible gear grinding/knocking sound mostly in 2nd when you let off of the throttle sending a good bit of vibration back into the shifter handle. I pulled off the ruber window on the bellhousing to check to see if the throw out bearing and p plate were ok and they are. So we pulled the tranny (ujoints were fine too). Anyways with the top cover off, I can't see any destroyed or chewed up gears. The is some light up/down and side/side end play in the input shaft. Is there anything I am missing here? I didn't check the t-Case because the problem seems to be worse in 2nd.

The tranny is a t15 if its an orignal v8. They are weak and are a POS.

If your getting vibes and grinding and you checked your ttranny, I would check ujoints, It sounds like one is binding or sticking.

I looked at the U-joints and they seemed o.k. Any other ideas anyone?

Front main input barring is shot, I had the same issue before..
