I wheel a 83 cj7 with a 258 T4 transmission dana 300 and stock axles and axle shafts. I do have a locker in the front but not the rear cause I know the two peice stock amc 20 shafts are junk. I had 32" BFG all-terrains on it but I recently upgraded to 33" baja claws. With the 32's I never had any problems with breakage but since the claws are more aggressive and slightly bigger what are my chances of breaking something?

Better than before.

Just get some 1 piece shafts for the 20 in the rear. If I remember correctly, the amc20 has a larger carrier/gearset than a D44. Fairly thin tubes though.

keep your hubs unlocked on the street and you should be golden.
the claws are not more aggressive, tread wise. looks wise, maybe.
your dana 30 should hold just fine because the rear axle usually takes more abuse. what kind of locker are you running up front?
the AMC20 does have bigger ring and pinions than dana 44s do, and yes thin walled tubes. that is why they often bend and spin in the housing. truss it, and put in one piece shafts. then you could run 35"s or 37"s, otherwise get bigger axles.

One piece shafts are a cheap investment.

I welded the two pieces together, 33"s, 3.54, and lock right...
No locker in the D30.
That was just after dropping a 350 Vortec in.

You should be fine. I'd replace the shafts if you have to. But I'd think even with a locker you'd be fine as long as you are not too hard on the skinny.

Hell, if you break it, swap in something stronger.

FWIW, the trussed 20 with one piece shafts is a stronger axle than a 44.

Locking hubs have absolutely nothing to do with how it drives on the street, even with a locker....ask me how i know. In fact it is recommened that you keep youir hubs locked from time to time to allow the oil to get on the parts/bearings that aren't turning. 37s are pushing it, even tho it has a bigger R&P the axle shafts are still inherently weaker, even in dana 44s guys generally blow shafts before the R&P.

Don't throw any money into the 20. Maybe some 1-piece axles, put a bead on the tube/housing union to keep it from turning, save money for another rear axle, chances are you can probably find a 44 with the same gear ratio you have now if you haven't regeared yet for less then 200 bucks.

While nobody is denying the 20 is a resilent axle for a stock rig, you don't see guys running 38s on model 20s for a reason. Trussing the axle doesn't make the internals any stronger then they allready are. As said in my previous post, the R&P is slightly larger, the axles themselves however are not, which is generally the weak link in them. Theres always the argument that you could truss the 44. Bottom line Dana 44>Model 20. Wheel that bitch until it breaks, upgrade to a stronger axle when it does.
