After running in low range,low1,all day at mid Illinois mudfest my tranny didnt want to shift into 2nd and overdrive when we hit the road home.It finally did,but stopping at stop signs it dont always want to shift to 1st. The fluid dont smell and I didnt get it hot.Any ideas why it is acting this way.Should I get it flushed and try a new filter ?2001 Wrangler 4.0 L and auto trans. Eddie

Change the fluid and hope for the best. How do you know you didn't get it hot?
What color is the fluid?
Do you have additional cooling added to the transmission?
What your describing is typical of an overheated transmission...

Fluid is still pink, and not dark at all.I didnt think I got it hot because it has the factory cooler, and I wasnt hard on it at all.I will try the fluid change and probably pull the pan and clean the filter. Thanks Eddie

Just because you have a cooler doesn't mean it didn't get hot.
Pull the filter and add one of these.

And put a deep pan on it...

Hey,neat transfer case mod, that just to visually see if the fluid is at the correct level? Is the filter you added to your tranny an aftermarket deal or something you fabbed up?I thought about the deep pan, but didnt get around to it yet.How much extra fluid capacity with yours? I drove to work this morning and everything shifted fine and acted the same as before, did I dodge the bullet,or it is just going to keep having this problem? Eddie

Yes, it's so I can check the fluid level and look for water.
Any external oil filter mount will work, you can get them for around $20-30.
2 or 3 quarts, I forget.
Change the fluid, the sooner the better.
You can also add a B&M fan cooled unit to help with cooling...
