Looking for the correct fuel pump for my crawler. I'm running an E2000 external pump with a 12 gallon fuel cell. The fuel cell has an output line, a return line and a vent line. I vented the tank with about 3' of fuel line up about 2' above the rig with a PVC valve at the end. Takes little pressure for it to vent. After about 1 to 2 hours of running, in around 80 deg weather, it starts spitting out gas alot and soon the engine starts running bad and you can hear that the engine is starving for gas. I you shut it off and let it cool down for a few minutes it runs fine again. I think the pump is putting out too much pressure and it builds up pressure and heat in the tank which in turn causes the pump to cavitate and the rig to run bad. I had no problems once the weather cooled down last year but since the weather's heating up, here we go again. Any idea's?

Are you sure its not vapor lock? Are the lines running close to headers the block or intake?

Possible, I'll check it out. I'm a little concerned that the external pump might be the wrong one. Frustrating problem.

Your airtex pump may be a p.o.s. Im using the MSD 2225 fuel pump in my rig with tuned port for 2 years now and would recommend it.

I have a Walbro pump on my TPI K5. Has worked well for several years. I had the MSD pump too but it was loud, and the more it got used the louder it got which scared me so I bought the Walbro pump. The Walbro pump is about $140 I believe. I also run the same/similar walbro pump on my Dodge Cummins as a lift pump for the diesel fuel. It has been on almost 1.5yrs with 80,000 miles and zero problems.
Check your fuel pressure if you think it is to high. Its not hard. YOu can get the $20 fuel pressure tester kit from Harbor Freight and it works well, I just bought one to diagnose some issues too.
As far as the fuel getting to hot I would believe it. I had issues running poorly with my TPI when I was way low ( 1/8 tank or less) on fuel in my K5. The pump moves so much fuel you are not only compressing it which will cause heat but it also is running through a hot fuel rail on the motor and back to the tank continuesly. If I added a couple gallons of cool fuel my problem would go away for the fact it cooled the fuel but it wasn't getting pumped to the motor and back as much.
An answer for you with small fuel cell might be something like the drag racers run with a cool can. It is a can with metal fuel line running through it in a coil. The fuel is pumped through the can which you fill with ice/icewater to keep the fuel cool.

Thats probably my next step with the coil cooling if the pressure all checks out. I heard that you can buy an inline finned cooler thats around a foot long and 3" around that I can put on the return gas line from summit racing. I'm going to check with Chevy what they recommend for the engine for a fuel pump. Thanks for the recommendations guys. If there's any more ideas, let me know.
