: Let's hear your opinion.....
Mechanos 07-17-2002, 11:07 AM ....on this stupid subject.
When doing an SOA, would you cut the old SUA perches off or just leave them there and put your new SOA perches on the top of the tube? Alright....let the flaming begin :flipoff2:
Scout Dude 07-17-2002, 11:22 AM cut them off..looks like a hack job if you don't:barf:
The Rockslut 07-17-2002, 11:29 AM I say leave them. Gives you a nice flat spot to put the floor jack
TERRA-IZER 07-17-2002, 11:34 AM Cut them off, another thing to catch on rocks if you leave them on, and i removed mine carefully and reused them .
SSGTWC 07-17-2002, 11:39 AM I'm leaving mine on for the front axle ....rock guards :p :flipoff2:
The rear I had to hack off...interferring with the top perches

Actually this is a Good AND Bad idea.
Good: Yes it does give you a nice flat spot for a floor jack. IF you have a floor jack that goes up that high $$$$$!!!!!!
Bad: Most floor jacks I've seen benifit from having a curved place to jack from. The curved area would sit down in the indentions on the "head" of the floor jack. This way while your jacking and the jack is "shifting" (like they usually do) it's moving on the FLOOR and not from the place where it's jacking the vehicle.
KEEPING THEM AS ROCKGUARDS = :rainbow:
I say ditch them!!!!! unless you just don't want to take the time to hack 'em off, THAT I could inderstand:beer:
YellowIH 07-17-2002, 11:54 AM
They will be really cute to look at on the ramp when you flex it out.....over the mall speed bumps
:flipoff2: :D :flipoff2: :D :flipoff2:
Cut them off unless you want more rock hooks....
Mechanos 07-17-2002, 12:00 PM Well, the one on the front is definately getting hacked off because with the rotation of the axle (pinion up for CV) the leading edge of old perch is point downward making a nice lip to catch on shit. The other side is of course cast into the diff and I've ground enough on that f-er so it is staying.:flipoff2: Now the rears don't present much of a problem either way. I was just wondering if it provided any additional lateral support. Kinda puts the u-bolts in quasi-double shear in a sense. If you follow my drift. Whaddyathink:question:
RustoleumWhite 07-17-2002, 12:46 PM Mine are still on the rear...
Makes a really nice place to bolt my rear shock mounts to...
Made some brackets that bolt to the (2) 5/16" holes in the perch, extend back and then up to pick up the lower shock mount. Work great, can be swap from axle to axle, and surprisingly I seldom, if ever, hit them....
The Rockslut 07-17-2002, 12:54 PM Go ahead and leave them on your rig. However, if i see you on the trail and you are all FUBAR because those perches were not cut off I will bust your chops :D

But as far as leaving the perchs on, If you have other perchs, leave those on, they will protect your u bolts.
Tony Sobrito 07-17-2002, 05:24 PM this sounds like chit chat to me
Second Mouse 07-17-2002, 05:43 PM When I did mine, I didn't even think twice about it.....I thought you were supposed to hack the old ones off and buy new ones, otherwise, everybody would think you were a lazy ass. So, that's what I did. :D
Oh yeah, I echo what Tony said too.

Nah... right now chit chat is full of quotes about masturbating with hair conditioner. This is FARRRRRRRR more technical than that. :flipoff2:
I ground the old ones off on my last springover. Leaving them on jst made it look like the hackjob it really was. Once they were ground off... it looked great. Yeah... and then I was gonna get a chrome diff cover, cuz that looked great too...
I say, grind 'em.
Joe V 07-18-2002, 12:34 AM Since no one has said yet, I will.
Go 60 or 14 bolt instead.:D

I'm assuming that if one were to go to my website, they might learn a little more than if you should grind off the spring perches or not.....so yeah.....a little like chit chat in comparison. :flipoff2:

Are you sure about that? Maybe learn how to :rainbow: color coordinate your Scout. :D :flipoff2: :D :flipoff2: :D :smokin:

And I'll be sure to visit Second Mouse's site you make sure I paint it the right color.:D :flipoff2:

Get out on the trails more, and off your keyboard, maybe you will recognize tech when you see it!!! :D
I don't think stock perches don't hang down far enough to worry about. Not much farther than the face of the ubolts. In fact, I would make an argument that they do a good job of protecting the ubolts. Nice flat surface to slide on, not likely to *hook* on anything... Not worth the trouble of taking off.
http://www.ihssii.org/Hooper/Images-Technical/RearUndercarriage.jpg
Course, if I were worried about asthetics, I'd have to get out the yellow paint for my frame so folks would know where it was on my rig!!!
Mechanos 07-18-2002, 12:40 PM Does not look like a problem in your case Hooper, but both of my my axles are rotated to run CV shafts. As a result, the stock perches are not parallel to the ground anymore and one end does stick down a bit past the ubolts.... mine will be coming off. Hell, when I posted this originally, the board was slow and I just wanted to get some opinions on it.

OK. I can see how a rotated axle could give you problems with those perches.
I didn't see anything wrong with your post. It was better than *How strong ar D44 axles. Can I burn rubber on the street with 3.54 gears and 31" tires*
YellowIH 07-18-2002, 01:18 PM
Looks like you need shave that rear 44 :fj: down.....I like the way you have the driveshaft ends swapped. I learned to do that the hard way.
A thought.....a **slider** could be welded on the spring perches to close the gap and create a better sliding surface if you did not want to leave the SUA hooks welded on...
I need some half doors like that SSII....
:D

Yep, the diff could stand to lose that bottom lip.
The driveshaft swap is by accident. Wasn't paying attention when I put it in and too lazy to go back and swap it back. I'll swap it back next time I change u-joints.
Close the gap? Close what gap? Not following you?

The gap btw the edge of the old SUA perches and the diff tube...maybe weld a little triangle on it to make it smoother....I don't have access to draw it....guess I need to stop drinking at work....:rasta:

I have broken more than one ubolt. Gouged the heck out of the bottom of another one on a rock crossing a stream. Took it off and replaced it. I've also hit them on rocks, and knocked them sideways on more than one occasion.
But then, I am a newbie driver and don't know what I am doing. Can't see a good driver ever tagging a ubolt on a rock....
I wouldn't put a perch there if it weren't already there, but mine don't hang down far enough to grab much of anything, I'm more worried about function than form, and they DO protect the ubolts, which CAN get banged around on rocks.

OK, here is another picture. Maybe you can describe it based on this one. Not sure how these are going to really *hook* on anything, after all the leading and trailing edges are already rounded up quite a ways... ?????

For the record, if you (non specific) want to grind the stupid things off, then grind them off. Big deal. Mine don't hang down far enough to worry about and they are not worth bothering with.
If you (non specific) are worried that they cosmetically damage your vehicle, go here (http://www.jeepsunlimited.com) . I don't care a whole lot about cosmetics, and I have enough stuff to do, without making work for myself.
RustoleumWhite 07-18-2002, 04:07 PM Cut'm off if you want, leave them if you want.
If you have the torch/grinder/whatever handy at the time your doing the SOA and you not in a hurry, then have at them.
*I* wouldn't tear down an existing unit just to wack them off..... not that important IMO.
Unless you were going to paint it, then wack it off and smooooooth is out :D
hey pat?? When did you ever blow a u-bolt with the SO?? I knew you broke a couple of the small dia. ones with the SU...

Snapped one up front. Course I have no idea when or why. Just that it was broken. Broke on the front side, halfway up the axle. I was underneath checking things out after a run, and there it was. Top half was hanging down through the spring plate. Ubolt had a nice tag mark on it, could have been crossing may creek, or...? Passenger side, outboard BTW. Clean break across the bolt, at a bit of an angle..
Gouged a front one on the driver side and replaced it. I think it was on the stair steps at Reider. Had a nasty grind/carve out of the bottom. I pulled it and replaced it. Figured it would have let go at the most inopportune time otherwise.
Guess I am the only one who has broken/heard of a ubolt breaking though....
Edit: It was the driver front that I gouged, not the rear
