: real quick -- 3rd member interchangability question
MUCHADO 05-05-2008, 07:49 AM ... Are the FJ 40, 60, and 80 center sections interchangeable?? Which are which arent? I have 40 and 60 axles at the house, they look like it, never looked too hard at an 80 series axle, but have a line on a rear 80.Thanks :grinpimp:
orangefj45 05-05-2008, 08:10 AM 40,45,55,60 and 62 third emembers all interchange with the exception of the early 40 and 45 series that used smaller studs on the housing. they can be drilled out for the larger studs.
most of the diffs ran 4.11 gears but some had 3.73s. also, there are different pinion flange bolt pattern and different spline counts on the pinions ( coarse and fine ) as well as coarse or fine axle shaft spline counts so the side gears are different, but they can be replaced with their matching counterparts.

Thank you! That helped a bunch.. so 80 is different all together huh..
arndog 05-05-2008, 08:31 AM somebody more knowledgeable will pipe in im sure but one of the 80 centers will interchange, I think its the front, this is how some are putting electronic locking diffs in a 40.

J-Ohlin 05-05-2008, 08:37 AM Not sure about the 80 rears but the fronts use an 8" ring gear like the mini trucks. So the front is a no go.
MUCHADO 05-05-2008, 09:00 AM Cool, it's an 80 rear with e-locker that I'm lookin' at, just unsure details on it... My dad's 40 has a fj60 front so I figured since his rear 40 axle has a locker we'd move that to the front and pick up the 80 rear with e locker... the different series axles can get confusing! Wish it was as simple as mini trucks where everything was interchangeable for all years

Yes, an 80 rear will fit in an FJ60 axle.
bustanutley 05-05-2008, 12:00 PM 80 rears drop into any other cruiser axle except what george mentioned, however E-locker rears require twice the spline length on one shaft. I am not a fan of that locker..

Thanks. What's the problem with this E-locker? Just curious why you don't like them I don't have any experience with these axles
cruiseroutfit 05-05-2008, 02:48 PM While the 80 rear e-locker will physically fit in the 40/55/60 housings, unless you are currently running a full-float housing, you will not be able to complete the swap ;)
The 80 Series rear e-locker (or non-US factory cable lockers for that matter do NOT have the provisions for c-clips. This locker is a great unit overall, especially if your already running a FF axle. However it does have its limitations, spare shafts will have to be fit to your application (as it is a rare setup to find on the trail) and if/when you break a shaft, you may be faced with some serious axle housing "surgery" to remove the broken shaft between the actuator fork and the side gear, not a fun trail fix. All things considered I've only seen/heard of a dozen? cases of this happening... so rare in comparison to a birf failure for example. Other lockers such as the ARB does NOT have this limitation.

Awesome info, thank you!
So how much is one of those rear axles worth ?? Or would it be better to just put a locker in the back of a FJ60 axle? I liked the idea of the FJ80 axle being full float.

Well, a hub to hub locked 80 rear axle can sell for anywhere from $250 to say $1000, kind've all over the range based on condition, location, need, etc. Is it worth it? Well that depends. Are you looking to get the added width of the 80? Are you willing to rework the park-brake, driveline flanges, etc to fit the complete assembly under the 60. Long story short, the best option to lock up the rear of your 60 will be to install a locker, $250 - $1000 depending on the options and your needs.

It's going under a FJ40 that already has a FJ60 front axle and the parking brake is on the tcase output... What is WMS on a FJ80 axle? I've got a set of spacers I wouldn't mind tossing on the already wide FJ60 axle to match up with the FJ80 if it's 3-4 inch difference... We were planning on a FJ60 rear axle and locking it since we can get the axle for $150 locally--but this FJ80 axle popped up and since it is E locker it triggered a lightbulb---like if we could do it for around the same $$ as locker plus 60 axle then it'd be worth it?
Thanks you have been alot of help so far!

Sorry I forgot to mention the need for full float.
As Kurt said if you twist a shaft you are SOL. I tried to find an exploded diagram of it but to no avail. The way the work, half the splines twist and lock the shaft in place.
I would just weld the 60 carrier up.
Rob, i've beaten on my 80 rear all year.(you've actually witnessed a little of the beating, and may have it on tape:laughing:) i finally twisted a rear shaft a coupke weeks ago. it bound the e-locker up and would not engage. pulle the shafts and replaced em with the polly rears. the 80 rear is pretty damn stout.
turnmeover 05-06-2008, 05:36 PM Run the 80 e-locker up front with the downey cable conversion and some bobby long shafts w/ a special long side axle shaft (no xtra charge ) and you will love it. the ability to disieguage the locker will make turning night and day. Keep the locker you have in the rear. I ran a locker up front and it was a bear to turn . You will have to do some clearincing to get the e-locker in to any cruiser housing and get a few longer studs and relocate others but the results are worth it. check this wright up on mud.

If it dont work go to mud a check out the teck section.

Sweet :smokin:
So is $400 a fair deal on the 80 rear w/ e-locker??
Also just figured out the WMS will be perfect he's got 2 inch spacers he can throw on the FJ60 axle that's up front and it'll be within 1/4" of each other..

Will get it to ya next month in Hannibal. :smokin: I think it's a fair deal for what it is. I also think it's a damn stout axle in stock form. Calipers might be frozen, rotors need cleaned up and the parking brake items removed if need be. Anything you want me to check out on it let me know Rob

Yup I figured it was I'm not bitchin' about price! :smokin:
And calipers/rotors not a big deal calipers at least will make for a good core... Can have a friend turn the rotors not a big deal either. :grinpimp:
And is next month hannibal? I thought it was July--that's what the XRRA site says
Bones 05-08-2008, 11:13 AM That's right, june there are no races. Maybe I can get it to KC before Hannibal then. We'll have to see.

A trip to Bonita Flats would be mandatory given the circumstances :smokin:
I love that place--it's been too long!:grinpimp:
