I started with a 1997 TJ. 4cyl, manual. I traded a stock CJ for it and the guy gave me $1500

THIS BUILD STARTED OUT WITH 1 TONS, 42'S ETC. IT HAS TAKEN A TWIST AND IS NOW 2 STEERING ROCKWELLS, INJECTED 496 BIG BLOCK, 16" COILOVERS, 49" IROK'S ETC......

Here is what I started with.

Interesting, pitman arm sheered off at the steering box? . What are the plans? It's hard to tell from the pics, but the tub looks like it's tweaked, what about the frame?

Made the road trip to TX to pick it up. Here is once I got it home.
http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t213/406yj/Blue%20TJ/cid__0323081516a.jpg

I had bought some stuff I was going to use for my CJ build.
Dana 60 front.
14B rear.
Dana 300 with twin sticks.
Raptor 700R4.
42" TSL's

Hold your breath. I'm about to show ya
:D

I bought it off a kid in TX that had it for 1 mo. He was in the service and saved his $ for a jeep when he got back home. He ran out and paid cash for it and didn't have full coverage. He was on his way to work going into Dallas when the pitman arm sheered right off the steering box. He went into the concrete median at 70 MPH. The jeep went over the median and into trafic on the other side where people were doing 70 at him. He slid across 3 lanes of trafic to a stop on the side of the road. The dude lived. I wanted something that was a total piece of $hit so when I got done I would realy have something to show all the work. But I didn't know it was this bad until I had already hauled my jeep there for the trade. No turning back now:D

Pile of $hit that came off it.
http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t213/406yj/Parting%20out/DSCN1012.jpg
Final pulling of the engine. The beefy (ugly) front tube bumper saved the front end of the jeep. The motor, trans, and T case were all in perfect shape. I started it and put it into gear to get it on the trailer. 4wd still worked perfect. But the control arms were trashed and the frame was tweaked from the firewall forward.

I made my cuts further forward than where I will end up but wanted to get all the bent up frame out of the way first so I could get to it a little better. Then I made a cut on the other half

I hope Andy doesn't mind me posting pics of his rig, but I'm going to be blueprinting the front of my jeep off of his. As far as the steering, BTF truss, coilovers etc.

Are u gonna do a 4 link like his or are u planning something different.

I like the looks of his jeep BTW, looks mean

EDIT: I still cant get over what you are starting with, I thought my jeep started out rough, I at least have a straight frame and body, just need to deal with a bit of rust on the tub, and lack of drivetrain/interior/steering. You are definitly going to be extremely proud when u finish.

Thanks:D I"m going to use 2x4 square tubeing. I'm not sure what my final wheel base will end up at. 114-116 (guessing). When Andy gets back I'm hoping I can talk him into helping me lay out the front tubeing. I like the fact that I get to build it for what works best for me not have to deal with what the jeep gods built for me as a base. I'm kicking around the idea of having the hood 1-2" lower to help look over it. But I'll have to lay all that stuff out here soon. I just picked up a new Welder so It's about time I start slaping the new frame under there.

It looks good! My 99 was trashed in the front like yours. I used the stock from from the motor mounts back, made everything the way I wanted (i.e. moved brackets around, etc.) and then a few months later made a completely new frame using what I had done on the stock frame as a template.

Here is my build:

Small change of plans. I just picked up an Atlas II so I'm ditching the idea of the dana 300 with the twin stick I have siting on my bench. I had called JB and the waiting 3 mo. for the 4-1 kit didn't fit with the time frame I'm working with.

If you know of anyone looking for a Dana 300 twin sticked fresh rebuild with stock gears a clocking ring and the addapter from the 700r to the 300 with the new input for the Dana 300 (New in the box) I'm needing to move it.

We put an end to the night after finding out that the wire that came with the new welder was some gasless bull$hit. The welds were not something that was going to work for us not even for tack welds. I'll be picking up some new wire today and we will get back at it tonight.

Started with this.
http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t213/406yj/New%20Frame%201/DSCN1120.jpg
Put the first 2 pcs on there with a 20 degree cut and made them long so we could lay out the flat runs. Tack welded them so they could be taken off for the cut on the other end
http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t213/406yj/New%20Frame%201/DSCN1122.jpg

Found some time this weekend to work on the new frame a little.

Took the plasma out and started to cut the fishplates.

Had to do a little work to get the 2x4 tube to match up with the 2 1/4x 4" stock frame. I picked up some 1/8" and plated the new frame to make it even with the stock frame.
http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t213/406yj/FishPlate/DSCN1180.jpg
Then went back over it with the 1/4"
http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t213/406yj/FishPlate/DSCN1188.jpg
Had to grind down the original welds on the frame to make way for the new plates.

I went ahead and just tack welded them but wanted to see how it all worked out before I burned them in.

I keep rolling the 14 bolt under it just so I have something to shoot for as you start to wonder if it's even worth it or not.
(Yes I know it's a 14b. It's only in the pic so I can get a feel for what it will look like and the 60 is a bitch to roll around without the steering hooked up)

Because this project needs so much we have decided to pick one area and run with it. So I'm going to start with the back half. This way I can get all my suspension mounted up and make it easier to move it around using the cherrypicker on the front. So..... For that to happen it was time to start hacking away.

But before that I had to find a place to put my spare.

All jokeing aside. I had to put some weight on the front when I moved the jack stands to the center as it was wanting to tip back without the motor or anything else in the front.
NOW. It's time to start hacking.
I started to make a cut more forward where I wanted to be but there was to much in my way so I decided to make the cut further back than where I will end up.

coming out really schweet! what are teh suspension plans, link ends, CO's, etc?

I'll be doing coil overs on all 4 corners. Just bought my BTF front truss with the ram mount so it's full hydro time. It will see some street time so I'm not 100% sure on the ends yet but I'll prob run with heim joints. I'll be upgradeing the knucklets on the front and am looking for a new set of 35 spline outers to go with my new premium lockouts. It will be 4 linked all around and I'm not 100% sure what I'll be doing for lockers. I run arb's in my other jeep but I'm kicking around the idea of the OX locker up front. Prob. run with a detroit in the rear.

geberhard
07-09-2008, 02:13 PM
Aweseom! I think you will be happy with the detroit in the rear (running o a 14 bolt for a few years now, no issues). I am running an ARB on the front, but looking back could have gone with a Detroit since I am keeping the manual hubs. I bought the outer 35's from 4wdfactory.com greta princes at the time. Doug (Highhonda on the board) also sells them for a pretty good deal.

What length are you planning for teh arms as far as a ballpark? I am gathering parts to convert my rig to CO on the front and need to figure out links, mounts, etc...

Definitely keeping an eye on the build!

You must be wanting lots of width since you knocked those H1's down to about 2 1/4" of backspacing. I'm about to cut into mine and looking for about 3 3/4". Looking good bud :D

I've had a hard time of late finding time to work on the jeep. With 2 girls under the age of 3 I feel bad leaving them with the wife all day so I can go work on my project. Plus...I live in the country and between keeping horses going and the place mowed up it's about a full time job. My project has been geting worked on at night time when the kids are asleep. As for the width. I want lots of it. Because I have a deck over gooseneck trailer width isn't a problem. I'm shoting for wide and low. Nicely done!

Personally, I think you should just keep the 60/14 combo. Yes, rockwells are beefy! BUT do you really need the beef? I think you're just going to make it heavier and the 60/14 will hold up to what 95% of wheelers actually need. Yeah, you might break a stock shaft or u-joint, but upgrade and you can have almost bulletproof axles with less weight IMO.

Now, I do think it would be cool as hell, and you'd probably never have to deal with breakage.

If you've ever broken a dana 60 multiple times with a comparable vehicle then you probably do need the rockwells. But if your vehicles (comparable, not a yj on 33's) have held up in the past with 1 tons or less then your driving style most likely doesn't necessitate rockwells.

I also don't know what you've built up before since I'm fairly new here, so maybe I'm just wrong altogether.

This is a line I have been walking. When I sat down to do my build orig. I was going to do a rear steer 60. But I talked myself out of it. After looking at all the money I was throwing toward the 60 I started to think....Why not go with rockwells and do the rear steer that way? Much stronger axle and I'd rather over build than guess at what I'm going to run into down the road. Plus I want to go bigger. I'm thinking 46's are a good fit:D To get the 60 to where I would feel good pounding on it on 46's would take some coin. Why not start with something stronger? After all they are only 200#'s heavier. This is the line I have been walking....... We will see.

Was that the gold YJ???

No, no...you sold that to buy the built TJ.

No...ahhhh...it was the CJ to putter around in and not hurt the TJ.

Damn...no it was the 60/14b leaf sprung the CJ so you could go "big."

Shit....no, it is the wrecked TJ linked cause you wanna beat the piss outta it.

Well...hell. Now it's rockwells.....maybe.

You remind me of a snippet I once saw.....

"406YJ: Yes doctor I have a problem...."
"What is it?" the doctor says concerned.
"406YJ: I have a wheelin' problem."
"Doctor: Oh yeah!?! What seems to be the problem?"
"406YJ: Well.....I never go."

Friend to friend.....

You need to just throw some shit together and wheel. There are folks here (me included) that just took a welder and hack fab'd shit up and wheel the piss out of it. Beat the snot out of it....and come back the following weekend for some more assuming they have gas money. I've now known you for roughly 2 years. I've yet to see or hear of you wheel. Fire roads and rocks smaller than basketballs don't count. :flipoff2:

I don't know you any more than the next guy on this forum.....but dayum already.....wheel SOMETHING. My hacked up YJ made it through moab, colorado, arkansas and countless local trips on nothing more than welds from a 110 clarke welder and wiring twisted together and electrical taped. For fuck sake, todd.....wheel. Knowing when to say when will make you a much happier wheeler......trust me I know.

very true, that's why i have the piece junk with a set of one tons and really no big money into it. i dont have the fancey T-case i want in it, i dont have the hydro steering i want to run, i dont have the beadlocks i want ( or any beadlocks for that matter ).
i have a jeep and i really dont even want a jeep, i want a buggy. this is why ive been collecting parts for a few years now and in the mean time beating a jeep that just keeps taking it.

whats my point, build somthing that can take an ass beating, but wont get you in over your head or overwelm you. yes i break stuff but nothing i cant find at a junkyard or from friends. i say keep your path with the 60/14 bolt. finish it and then get the rocks for a buggy build ( you know you want to build one ). what ever path you find hurry and wheel man, lifes to short, jason.

how do u figger the angle on the step in the frame ??

measure once, cut 47 times. How else??

You add the angle of each tube. I can't remember the exact measurement but...

If your up tube is 30 degrees and the flat tube is 90 degrees you get a total of 120 degrees. You divide that in half at 60 degrees and that is your angle to cut so your tube is equal on each end. Clear as mud?

Well lastnight we had a chance to get all over the back half of the jeep.

When we went out there lastnight this is where we had left off. Still to much frame existing. We wanted to start where the frame jogs up and take that out so we would have a straight line to work with.
http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t213/406yj/Back%20Fabn/DSCN1402.jpg
Made our cut. Now we have something to work with.
http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t213/406yj/Back%20Fabn/DSCN1403.jpg
Went ahead and burnt in a crossmember to tie in both sides of the frame and give us something flat to work off of.
http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t213/406yj/Back%20Fabn/DSCN1404.jpg
Knowing that the goal was to bring the frame rails in and up we welded on our first piece with the angle to jog it up towards the body.

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t213/406yj/Back%20Fabn/DSCN1417.jpg

Thanks,

It will be once I'm done. I got a good buy on the axles but they had been outside a while. There is a lot of dirt on them that has to come off. We were laughing that I'm going to have over 100$ just packing the axles again. I'm thinking I might leave the hubs out the way they are stock and run a bigger backspace on the H1's. Maybe 7". I'll have to see how it all lays out. I'm going to run 47" LTB's on a 16.5 wheel. I need to get them ordered here soon. That way once I rebuild these axles i can start laying out where they will go on the jeep and get my coilovers ordered. I haven't been giving it all that much time for a while since I knew I was going to be going with the rocks and not knowing much about them. I still need to figure out what I'm going to do as far as brakes. If I get lazy I'll go with pinion brakes as I'm not sure I can justify the $ for disks on all 4's.

I sold the Tons and the 42" TSL's. The only things I have left from the tons are: a chevy. 60 5.38 Yukon R&P and a complet highsteer set. Arms, tie rod, drag link, TRE's etc.

I'm in the process of geting some 49" Irocs bought. If that deal goes through then I will be going with the Ouverson Super 8 Kit giveing me disk brakes on all 4's and converting it to the 8x6.5 bolt patern. I'll also be upgradeing the front and rear shafts (even thought they are both front axles).:grinpimp:

I think you are right. I kind of crossed a line when I went to the rockwells. Then I decided %&ck it. I'm going all out. I only wish I knew someone local to get some parts cleaned up. I'm about to the point of puting stuff back together with the upgrades but will find myself on hold for the time being without a way to properly clean all the $hit that was on the rockwells. I'm thinking it's time to invest in a sandblaster. Talking with Andy today on 49's and 2 steering axles my wheel base may end up in the 125 range. I can't wait to get the wheels and tires on the super 8 kit so I can roll them under the jeep and see what the stance will look like:smokin:

Thanks. I think I'm going to keep the stock shafts for now. It's always good to have a backup. I called ouverson and asked if people were haveing any luck running their cromoly 16 spline shafts on 49's and he told me there are a hand full of people running them and they haven't had any problems. He said even at the 16 spline they are 3.5 times stronger than the stock shafts. I will be able to put new shafts in the front and rear for less that I could have bought one front 47 spline shaft. So until I feel the need to upgrade to 47 spline shafts I'm going to hold onto the stockers for backups. Thanks for the offer. As for the drag link stuff for the 60. I'm going to sell it all at once. With the highsteer arms etc. 150 bones takes it all. That's 1/3 of the original cost and they are all new. I'll post up some pics here in a bit. I took them on a trade and don't have a need for them.

Do you shave your arms???:flipoff2:

This thing is going to be awesome & I really dig the triangulated frame tie-in. I can't wait to see this thing on the rocks & wish I was closer so I could help build the damn thing, it looks like a lot of fun.

This has been my favorite build of all the ones I've been watching, by far.

Thanks for the kind words. I want to start by saying. DON'T CUT ON THE RUBI!!!! They are one of the only jeeps that hold their value just the way they are. I wouldn't dream of takeing out all that make a Rubi a Ruby so you can run full width. Sell it. Buy a stocker or a wrecked one as stated above. But know. There is a lot more work in finding one wrecked than what meets the eye. It all depends on how bad it is but my frame had to be cut off. The grill is tweaked. The hood and windshield hinges were trashed. The top and the frame for the top was trashed. The door uppers were trashed. You spend a lot of time looking for parts and having to paint them than if you found a jeep in stock form with a blown motor or something to that effect. Plus when you have a wrecked jeep there are less parts to sell off to help with your build.

Yeah, there will be no serious cutting on the Rubi. I was considering a stretch & axles but like you said, why use a Rubi to do that with when I'd just end up taking all the stuff out of it that makes it a Rubi. I'll probably keep it as it'll be payed off soon & keep it for the light stuff & once I get financially setup (house & shop to build in) I'll start a TJ project. Funny thing, I look at craigslist every time I look at this thread though... don't know why because I'm definitely not in the position to start anything like this.

I'm not a big fan of Ebay but here is how I work it. Find a jeep or 2 on there that you like. People always think that they are worth more than they are and set their reserve to high. Email them early and get their phone number. When the auction is over see what you can get it bought for or if it doesn't have any bids a few days into it tell them to cancel the auction and you will pay them when you pick it up. That's how I have bought 4 jeeps off of ebay. If you find a smokeing deal on a wrecked one be it that you are ready for it now or not. Get it bought. There is always time down the road.

I'm not one to give out props unless they are due but I have to tell you Randy at Ouverson is a kick @$$ cat. If anyone is thinking of doing a rockwell build make this your first call!!!!!!! I don't make a habbit to get ideas off of TV but I have to say. I watched Extreme4x4. Where they were building the S10 Truggy. When they showed the size of the 47 spline shafts that Ouverson sells I was like....Fawk it. I'm ditching the tons. I asked him if he had to donate that stuff and he said ya. But the amount of business he has recieved from that has been crazy. He said he is yet to watch it as he has been to busy trying to stay out in front of orders. After talking about what else I need to be able to beat on it when I'm done it hit me. I wish all vendors took half the time to help someone out when they are droping their hard earned coin on their products!!! Hats off to you Randy for you kick @ss service. I found some time to get started cleaning up the rocks. I started with oven cleaner. I've seen my neighbor do this with old auto parts he gets. I let that soak then hit it with my pressure washer. I had planed on takeing it to be sandblasted but this has been painless. God Bless Rockwells and the man that invented them for making them with square tube:beer:

Best part about that CJ, his 10 year old daughter as a "sexy" model.. WTF? I guess a douche bag that would build something like that would make his kid do something that perverted.

I need to quit reading this thread, I had a dream last night I was rebuilding some Rockwells that I scored to put in my build, that I was about to start. Talk about a shitty feeling when I woke up :mad3:

BTW, Rockwells & now a Injected big block?!?! I officially hate you & will punch you in the nuts & steal your rig if I ever see you in person. If you're lucky, I'll leave you my Jeep to "wheel".

OK.......I know this is a little off track but I just did a search for 454's in a Jeep on Google and this is what it pulled up.

I wouldn't think it would matter as they're top loaded no matter what. What will matter is how much room you have for headers/manifolds, oil pan, radiator, and everything else in there. Maybe mock up drivetrain minus Atlas and see what kinda rom you have and where it would be best utilized??????

Your gonna want drivers side, since the tranny oil pan on those 4L's is offset to the passenger. You can still use a passenger....but you have to use a fairly skinny driveshaft. If you go driver....you've got all the room you need for as big a shaft as you want.

with a stretch in the front you have to run a 2 piece shaft. So the pan orientation is a moot point. Regardless, drivers drop is the best situation for this build up. That will allow us to scoot the drive train over in the offset tunnel of the TJ and gain some clearance for a few other items.

Oh yeah buddy, just found my project rig. Not quite as bad of shape as what you started with, so I'll probably be done with it in a week or so. Think my total cost will be around $9k.

Or you could just trade me right now with the way your rig sits. Heck, I may even allow you to throw in a set of H1s to convince me I'm not making a mistake.

I'll post up much better pics tomorrow. I had a buddy that is a great painter over tonight to talk about what paint I'll be going with. I'm going to go with a orange with a hint of copper. Then where the hood is raised It will have half a shade darker in the paint and I will flow that down to the rockers and comp conrners. It will be much like what you see on the old Boss Mustangs only those were with black.

I sold my Atlas II so I'll be geting the 4 speed ordered. I've ditched the idea of the 10.3-1 and I'm going to go with their 5-1 4-speed.

I'd like to go just one round with the d!ck that works for Poison Spyder that puts the F$%#ing UPS labels on the rockers. FYI to that d!ck. Put them on the inside:flipoff2: Never the less I got the grinded down and primed as well as the comp corners. Got all the armor in place.

Motor and Trans. Should be in tomorrow (I'm hopeing)

Just guessing I'm thinking my Wheel base is going to end up in the 129 - 132 range. I now have both axles (on jack stands) under the rig which helped me in laying it out. The pics that I will be posing up are much lower than my ride height I'll end up at but I'm going to have to come up with something dif. as far as my jack stands.

I'll post up some more pics in the AM. Better pics of my jeeps first roll over, in the shop.

I spent a lot of time geting the armor ready for primer. We have had such a wet summer that everything gets rust right away. I haven't drilled the holes to mount the armor because it will all come off for the paint shop so it's held on by C-clamps for now.

Drew. I'm not a post counter so no sweat there. As for the photos. I got tired of doing searches and the build threads were 8 pages long with pictures that were taken every 3 mo. and the pics look like they took them from the neighbors drive. I had a ton of questions that never got answered. I just had to keep searching. My goal was to make my thread to where someone could read it post by post and feel like they could go do the exact same thing without wondering how someone did something. My hats off to Andy for all of his know how. I've learned more in the past 6 mo. than I had in a life time. Thanks for the pic. Nice rig! Would you mind telling me what made you go drivers drop on the front? I'm doing the same but would like to know what made you go that route.

I've had a slow down period here lately since my 8x6.5 conversion got kicked another 2 weeks. I'm hopeing he will be able to ship any day. I picked up a blast cabinet and a parts washer cabinet. So I'm starting to clean up some parts with my idle time. I had wire wheeled and painted the knuckles and they looked fine to the average eye but bothered me that there were places I couldn't get to with my wire wheel. So I'm leting them soak right now and will media blast them once they are out.

Does anyone know someone with a bender they want to sell on the cheap? I want a nice one. I'm not into the manual deal if I don't have to. I have a lot of tube to get bending on. Cage, front, slight exo around the hood etc. Help a brother out!!!!!

I went with a drivers drop, b/c my engine sat back in the firewall about 5" due to its low slung height, and clearance issues with the rockwell 3rd member. Since it sat so far back in, going with a drivers drop, allowed me to do the fairly common 1.5" to the passenger side engine placement that most 4x4's with a drivers drop see.. This gave me that much more room for the throttle pedal, which made things alot more comfortable

Your never going to believe it. For those that have been following my build. It just took another twist:flipoff2: Anyone want to buy a set of rockwells? I'm going to be selling my 2 front rockwells. BECAUSE. I've waited 2 mo. for my super 8 kits from Ouverson. Good guys no doubt but I couldn't wait another mo. I found a great guy here on pirate Hal. He had exactly what I was going to go with for sale. So I picked up 2 front rockwells. The rear is already set up for the middle like I was after. I'll have to flip the front to a drivers side (if I decide to go that route). It has highsteer arms. 2- rams. Ouverson's 47 spline 2" shaft for the rear with their locker.

I scored a Hydro bender with some 20' sticks of DOM. I can't wait to get started on my cage!! Thanks for the hook up Andy!!

If anyone can tell me the name and address of the @ss that decided Jeeps needed Torx bolts like like to track him down and stomp the piss out of him. Tonight I managed to get the stock cage pulled as well as all the seats. If it were not for the Plasma and cut off wheels I have no clue how I would have gotten it done. I donated it all to my neighbor just so I could score some help. Now that I have the axles with the 8x6.5's heading this way I'll be able to get rolling on my 4 link front and rear soon. I've gotten a 2nd wind now that I know I have all the parts and I have a bender to get started on the cage. If anyone has any pics of pimp cages I'd like to score some ideas.:)
