: Engine choices???
slvregl 10-08-2001, 02:38 AM I recently aquired a 1968 f250 camper special 2 wheel drive with a 360/C6 combo. The engine runs well, but has 137k miles. Anybody have a suggestion as to whether I should rebuild the 360 or look for a newer feul injected motor? This is going to be my tow rig and will eventually have a cab-over as well. Any advise greatly apprechiated!
yldkat 10-08-2001, 03:13 AM If I were you, I would bore the motor, and stroke it out to 428. The FE big blocks (352, 360, 390, 410, 428) are all the same except for bore and crankshaft. Sounds like you'll be able to use the extra HP and torque. Building an FE isn't too cheap though. Good luck!
slvregl 10-08-2001, 03:18 AM That's what I thought...so could you do the 428 heads and crank in the 360 to gain more torque? I've heard of people doing this with the 390's. Or do I still have to bore the cylinders?
Dieselmh 10-09-2001, 07:32 AM I would have to agree with rebuilding what ya got. You can always build it to suit your needs, and you don't have to search for another engine. <IMG SRC="smilies/usa.gif" border="0">
Benny 10-09-2001, 07:59 AM 22RE <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/bounce.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/bounce2.gif" border="0">
yldkat 10-15-2001, 07:50 PM Yeah, as soon as you put the 390 crank in, it will essentially be a 390, Truthfully, if you are going to do this go with the 428 crank and bore. the heads are probably the same volume, but the valves, intake port size, etc are better suited for breathing.
Might wanna throw in a Performer manifold and RV cam.....
yldkat 10-15-2001, 07:57 PM oops, to answer the rest of your question, you should bore it as well, the smaller bore dia. isn't too friendly with the bigger valves.
I think there is some definite clearance issues there if you don't bore it.
COME AWWN BIG BLOCK!!!!!!! :bounce2 <IMG SRC="smilies/bounce.gif" border="0">
22RE?? <IMG SRC="smilies/flipoff.gif" border="0">
<IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">
Lloyd 10-16-2001, 07:19 AM If you keep the small (390) bore and use a 428 crank you get a 410. Gobs of torque! FE's are easy to mix & match, and extremely durable.
Dan-H 10-16-2001, 10:20 AM Ok, sure it is possible to build that 360 into a better mill, but start adding up all the costs... Pistons, crank, rebuild kit, valve kit, machine shop labor... sounds like this is over a grand already.
I think it would be cheaper to just find an engine that has what you want.
I'd look for a *car* with a running 429 or a 460 and drop the whole shabang in. Look for an early 70s or late 60s Continental, LTD or T-bird. I'm guessing for $500 you could find one where the 8-track still worked too <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">
Then set that tired old 360 back in the car and *donate it* to charity and write off 50 bucks from your tax bill.

Ding ding ding we have a winner. That sounds like the best option. Although the 22RE option is still there <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">
gunracer1 10-16-2001, 04:18 PM i second the ditch the 360 idea. i picked up a lincoln a couple of years ago with a 460 and a c 6 for 400.00 bucks ran great. sold the disk break rear for 400.00. it was hit in the front but it ran great. the fe motors are good but parts are expensive. that 428 crank you want to aquire will cost as much as a wrecked lincoln. my 2 cents mike
Patman 10-16-2001, 04:24 PM Ok, I can't believe I'm the only one....But.....
CUMMINS!!!!
for what you'll spend in building a decent big block, you can buy a complete low mile (under 150K) 12 valve 6bt out of an early 93-95 Ram pickup. And it will run forever, and get better mileage towing than that bigblock will unloaded!! <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> Blow black smoke too!!! <IMG SRC="smilies/bounce.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/bounce.gif" border="0">
