I got a 1944 Farmall A a few months back to mowe my new place. Mowed with it the 1st time last weekend and it ran like a champ. Yesterday I added 5 gallons of gas, some lead additive and put on a new gas cap. She fired right up but was running rough. Started mowing and it got worse and stalled. Seamed like it was not getting eungh fuel. I cleaned the sediment bowl and cleaned up the air cleaner, still running bad.

Any Ideas?

First guess would be water in the fuel or sediment. Have you checked/replaced the fuel filter?

Unhook the fuel line at the sediment bowl and shoot some compressed air into it. If that doesn't fix it, then the carb would be the next suspect.

It has no fuel fllter, but does have a seddment bowl. I cleaned that. I put a new gas cap on it I wounder if it needs to be vented?

check your points, i know on our CUB it eats points for some reason. i added extra grounds thinking that was the problem but it still does it.

YES the gas cap needs to be vented or it will lock up.

Could you not just take the gas cap off and see how it runs for a few minutes?

Have you replaced the condenser?

x2. That would be an easy way to tell you for sure if it is your gas cap. It sure sounds like a possible problem.

Another vote for the gas cap. I have an H that will do the same thing. Try to run it without the cap, and that will tell you if it is the cap.

I have a 1944 Farmall B. Like everyone says, take the cap off and see what it does. Then ditch the sediment bowl and replace it with a nice big automotive fuel filter and never worry about that POS sediment bowl. The biggest problem I've had with them on old equipment is the smallest amount of sediment/rust/gunk will plug not the screen, but the feed hole into the bowl itself. Useless junk.

I have run a sediment bowl on my Cub for it's entire life. They work amazingly well. I have never had a fuel problem. You must clean the bowl as regular maintanance. If you see water forming you must clean it. A big automotive filter wont trap water. Water just goes right through. Just maintaine the sediment bowl and as the cap says, use clean fuel, keep it clean. If you have rust in your tank, then the automotive filter may be the way to go. But I would leave the sediment bowl and place the automotive filter downstream from the bowl.

It was the gas cap. I took it off and she ran well. I will add an in line filter along with the sedment bowl. Thanks for all the good advice.

Sorry about that - my grandfather's old Farmall had a filter and I never stopped to think that he would have retrofitted it...

For those of you with Farmall's The IH Carb had a filter that most people never knew they had. The filter is a very fine screen filter that is attached to the inside of the fuel inlet fitting to the carb.
It'll drive you nuts if it gets plugged, don't ask how I found this out!
