In hot weather in stop and go driving my little transmission temp light is coming on. Any ideas what to check/swap out?

always check the sender first. well after the wires themselves. remember start cheap and then go from there.

on my1988 range rover, the damn light comes on from the time you turn it on, even in the middle of winter after the truck hasnt been driven in a week. i just ignore it, it doesnt get driven enough anymore to be a worry.

but yours sounds like it could be a real problem.

thanks, i'll give that a try and see what's what.

i did just change the tranny out of fear, so at least i know that is good.

I had just changed it about 6 months ealier. It was really clean. Unfortunately, I didn't pay much attention the time before.

OK, I drove it on my stop and go commute at about 85-90 outside this morning. The light came on about 25 minutes into it. Crawled down, touched the trans pan, and it was very hot to the touch.

Waited about 10-15 minutes for it to cool, and drove the rest of the way -- another 30-35 minutes with a lot less stop and go. Got hot just at the end.

My front custom bumper/winch really cover a lot of the area underneath the front trans cooler. Could it be that not enough air is getting to it?

There are some pics of the front bumper at this link that shows the winch placement and the plate under the bumper goes about a foot back along the frame rails.

Thanks for any help. Oh, I have recently pressure washed the heck out of the trans cooler to ensure that it wasn't caked with mud.

OK, the damn light came on again, but this time I was ready with a point-and-read temperature sensor doo-dad.

Here are the readings in Farenheit

Transmission 209
Transfer Case 169
Engine 194

Seems to me that the temps are all fine. I stopped, waited 10 minutes while idling, and the trans temp went down to 185. Lightw was still on. Powered off the car for another 10, light went off.

So, I am betting the sensor is bad. Now, where the hell is it. I went through the workshop manual and found the coolant sensor but for the life of me have no idea where this one is.

209 sounds pretty high. and 185 at idle is too. I just towed a 5,500 lb. trailer cross country with my '89 RR. It's stock, but I installed a trans. fluid temp guage to monitor it so I could downshift before it got too hot.

My fluid temp average, around town driving, no load, was 140 F.

It never got hotter than that w/ no load.

It ran about 180-190 w/the 5500 lbs load, converter unlocked in 3rd at highway speed.

On the long mountain passes, the hottest it ever got was 240. At that point I would be in 1st gear low range (seriously) trying to keep the tranny from cooking.

I would say if your running over 200 with no load you have a cooling problem. If the fluid looks good, it may be a blocked line/cooler.

The temp sensor is on one of the cooler lines toward the front of the vehicle. I think you can get to it fron the engine bay.

Don't worry about it Tom...Do an aux cooler if you must, then disconnect the idiot light and never worry about it again.

You do a lot of running in the mud...did you closely check the cooler to see if it was clear ??
