ranger 700 efi not charging

Got a ranger 700 that seems to be not charging. It runs fine until the battery gets low, then cuts out and acts funny. Anyone have previous experience before I waste money on an alternator?

Are you running any kind of extras like lights when it does this???? I saw somewhere while doing research on my Ranger the manual said to keep the battery charged between rides and don't count on the rigs charging system to keep it fully charged.
