Keep researching, you'll see lots of websites thrown around, just start a new "favourites" folder in IE or whatever web browser you are using.
Start with this one:
www.expeditionportal.com

You'll get tons of great info there (and here) and you can start learning from others' experience. ;)

You need to decide on where you plan to go and for how long and then design the vehicle around that.

Matching the various components is important, its no point having food and water for 5 days but only enough battery power for fridges and lighting for 3 days.

Another of the big challenges is storing and retrieving all the gear you want without having to turn everthing upside down.

The weight of the accessories you add must also be constantly checked
Its too easy to get close to the maximum before you even add the occupants:homer::homer::homer:

Also look at the south african and aussie forums. they are way ahead of us on the overlanding thing.

Go to the Royal Geographic Society website and look around for some downloadable pdf's on all kinds of expedition related stuff.

As far as books you can get some Andrew White's stuff from Extreme Outback (great people) and then when you get serious order the Vehicle Dependant Expedition Guide from the RGS (mentioned above), that is the bible of overlanding.

Youtube has lots of videos by the aussie mag 4wdmonthly....search outback cooking to get you started

Horizons Unlimited (HUBB) is known for motorcylce related but they also have a vehicle based section.

Learn and let us know what you find.
