I'm tired of freezing during those cold nights on the trail. I need a GOOD sleeping bag, and NO mummy bag for me! I'm 6', 230 pounds, so I need some room.
I have been using two bags, but I'm trying to save space. Have you guys seen any good places on the net to buy a nice warm sleeping bag that will last. Maybe even water proof.

I saw several retangular bags that are rated around ~ -30

Make sure you get some sort of a "liner" that goes in the bag. When you sweat, the liner will act as a barrier between the sleeping bag. You don't want the sleeping bag wet when it's real cold.

This is going to sound <IMG SRC="smilies/rainbow.gif" border="0"> , but I camped several times in sub-zero weather, using a relatively "lightweight" sleeping bag. To keep warm, get "almost" buck nekkid, and put your clothes in the bottom. You'll be sweating your ass off because your clothes insulate your limbs from each other. If you're nekkid <IMG SRC="smilies/thefinger.gif" border="0"> that doesn't happen.

YES!, that is something i learned in Sweeden! we would take sheets form yor bed and sew them together, (it also keeps the "funk" smell out of your bag as well

If you want it to fit right, don't buy mail order. Go try some. I'm 6'4" and that's how I found one that I like, I laid right down on the floor in the store. It's a 5 degree down, I paid $150. I got it at a discount outfitter.

Get some polypro long underwear, tops and bottom. Cotton kills.

Go to a military surplus store and buy the sleeping bag system. It will come with a heavyweight bag, lightweight bag and a gortex bivy sack.

The light weight bag is good to 30 degrees, the heavyweight bag is good to -10 and together they are good to -30. And of course the Gortex bivy is waterproof.

I use it all the time when I'm camping.

I second this one. I used the three bag system when I went on a training exercise over to Norway in Winter (above the Artic Circle). Stay warm as hell. I wish I still had mine...

I'll have to check out that military bag. I'll even check the fit in the store ...."nekked"! LOL

Is it a down bag?

I was thinking Cabelas also, plus one of the 4x4 mags had a Gear directory. Last time I purchased a bag...don't laugh, at Costco I froze. It wasn't even close to the rated temp, so that kinda ticked me off.

If you can find a good Backpacking store or Mountaineering store, They should have an apportiate bag for you. I like Northface stuff..

Invest in a decent ground pad as well, The further you can get your body away from teh ground the better, Aside from a air mattres.

Not sure about you guys but find a good girl, keep the double bag and nekkid idea just add Jack....

Have you checked the local sports shops like Big5 & other mtn. climbing supply outlets. You can try em out as they hang the displays for that reason. Going mail order is no good if you cant fit it to your body style.

I have 2 sleeping bags. One for mild weather and one for extreme cold. I also have a silk liner which is supposed to alow any bag to go another 5-10 degrees colder.

You do realise that REI is a major supporter of the Sierra Club. Might want to rethink purchasing anything from them. I used to buy from them and their products are usually pretty good, but I'll try everywhere else first in order to not support those eco-freaks.

You don't want down. It stops working if it gets wet. they make sinthetic fibers that are as good or better than down now.

I use a bag from Target, called a Montana, about 60 bucks and it is 40X80 plenty big enough and warm enough. and two zip together great. <IMG SRC="smilies/glasses.gif" border="0">

I use Northface, try Campmore on-line. They always have web speacial and they sell the same bags in assorted sizes. I also have the same bag that InfantYJ has and it worked well, haven't seen them forsale in shops yet though.

Do you know if the public can get them for $119? I was told that they were over $400 to replace when I turned mine in. If it were only $120, I would have kept it.

I have a Mtn Hardware that is rectangular shaped. I got it for my kids - zip 2 together and they crash out together. The model is the "Orbit". The quality on the bag is top notch and they never complain about being cold.

Marco, you do know there are alot of other camping stores and backpacking stores then REI, Now I know REI has decent stuff, but there are many Specialty shops that specialize in backpacking in the bayarea

L.L.Bean makes a pretty kick ass product with basically a lifetime warranty on anything they sell. I have one of their down bags, you can buy them square and I got mine extra wide. ThermaRest makes great ground pads, but they inflate so if they could get punctured I'd find another option.
