i'm building a hommade rock buggy and my rear 4 link suspension out travels my vw rabbit coils. i have seen people only fix 1 end of the spring so it comes out of the bucket on one end. but i wana use a buggy leaf on the upper coil spring mount to provide additional droop fer the coil. anyone seen this done or know why it wouldn't work?? stability etc? thanks

This is sorta what you're asking about....the smaller coil lets the upper coil droop away, without getting "slack" or losing relative position.

COOOL! THAT'D WORK TOO, I GUESS THE BUGGY LEAF WOULD DO THE SAME THING. I ALREADY HAVE SOME DRILLED BUGGY LEAVES TO USE SO I'LL PROBABLY DO THAT. ANYONE ELSE GOT ANY PROS OR CONS???

Wouldn't it be less crap to worry about if you just went and got some other coils?

Just seems like a lot of moving parts to avoid getting another set.

But if you do run it...post the pics.

I think mounting the coil to a buggy spring would be asking to much of the buggy spring. Why not do something like the TJ's where the uper bumpstop keeps the coil from falling out when it droops?

Uhhhhh, no it doesn't

I rigged a retainer for my rear coils, so they're fixed at the bottom and pull away from the top. without the retainers, if you're really droopin', the coil will just out...

WELLLL, I'M GETTING AT LEAST 5 FOOT OF TRAVEL AT THE REAR WHEEL. MY HOIST WON'T GO ANY HIGHER. so the coils i would need would be very expensive ( THEY NEED TO EXTEND ABOUT 12" PAST UNLODED LENGTH) + it's a low budget project and i just like tinkerin and makin people scratch their head once in awhile. i just gotta be different. but keep the advice commin please. thanks guys.
P.S. I'M NEW TO THIS BOARD BUT I LOVE IT. SO MUCH EXPERIMENTATION. LEARN BY DOIN. i've got some pics but they are in the wrong format & i'm not smart enough to post em. their on off-road bbs suzuki post (spawn of bill tooley) if a computer literate can help me get em here. the post is about 2 weeks old.

Nope, don't do it. The buggy leaf travels in an arc, remember that. The coil will have top travel in the same arc. It is gonna be SUPER SLOPPY!!! Make some sort of bucket the coil can travel in. Also, coils are not all that expensive to have made. Call Mike Ladd at Bent and Twisted and askl him about custom coils. 530-342-3003 ask him about the Spyder Coils he has made.

Here are some more. Hopefully I'll get this post right the first time... It annoys me that the code used to post varies from bbs to bbs...

Get some aerostar coils (out of a Ford Aerostar van). I generally do not recommend them becasue they are way too soft, But I think that your buggy might be light enough that it would work well with them. They flex like CRAAZEIY!!!. I am sure that they will definatly stretch enough(from looking at the pictures) .

By the way, you have a really nice looking project. That is going to be one sweet trail beater. You might want o play alittle with your suspension mounting points. It looks like you are getting a lot of rear steer.

Dude!! I dig the "Body" on that thing!! LOOKS KILLER!!!!

Looks like you're getting some rear steer though. Easily fixed. Check out stock car racer catalogs. There is a guy here in town running coils he got from a place back east that kick ass. They were pretty cheap too. Something like $50 a piece or maybe that was $50 a set. I can't remember.

I mean how the bumpstop keeps the spring inline when it drops away from the spring seat. I didnt mean it retains the spring on its seat, obviously it would have to be clamped to the seat on the axle and limiting straps would need to be used to keep the spring from pulling away so far that it could get pulled over the bumpstop
