Well I have to open this can of worms, being that the snow pack is currently 60% of normal, we got .01 " of rain in April, so far non in May and it is going to be in the 90's and 100's in the VAlley this week. How soon do the think the fire paranoia will set in and they will close the forest and fordyce again this summer? That really bumbed me out last season....
I bet by the middle of June.... :mad3:

There is a new TNF supervisor this year, who is reported to be more open to our hobby than the last one, so he may not be as quick to close the trail. However, since no group chose to bring legal action last year to challenge the closure when other FS Supervisors in the area chose not to close their forests, a precedent has been set to close the trail anytime for fire danger, which here in CA would mean basically every year. Even as dry as the TNF was claimed to be they still allowed CF's at Meadow lake, as well as all/most of the other campgrounds inside the TNF. A legal challenge would have forced the former TNF supervisor to justify the closure of the trail on grounds other than the risk of vehicular caused fire danger, or at least forced them to ban all CF's.
Also, CAL4Wd didn't do our hobby any favors when they canceled Sierra Trek. They didn't have to, they had a special use permit that would have allowed them to run the Trek even with the trail officially closed. I understand the risk of running the trail, i.e., have a fire get started and prove the former TNF supervisor correct, but that wouldn't have been likely, and running the trail w/o a fire in August would have shown the closure wasn't needed due the danger of vehicular caused fire risk.
Hopefully the closure last Summer was a parting shot at mechanized forest using enthusiasts by the former supervisor, and just an anomaly.

lets all be careful when out on the trail and prove that we can manage our public trails. let everyone know that all of us are watching what is going on on the trails.
