I picked up a dana 70 rearend the other day for like 70 bucks to put in a project i'm working on. I figured being so cheap i had to snag it. But I was looking at the differential and it looks like the differential is offset. I'll be running a dana 300 tcase which has a centered output so how do I make this work? New axle? Thanks.

an offset diff won't be a problem. the u-joints are designed to handle an offset whether it be a VERTICAL or HORIZONTAL one. it doesn't know the difference.

Measure to see how much the pinion is offset. I doubt it is much. Is it from a Dodge or Dodge chassis motorhome?

I have no idea what it came out of but I think it was a dodge. The pinion isn't too offset anyhow. Just from looking at it I'd say maybe 3 inches. So I've got nothing to worry about?

Of course you can also point the pinion at the tcase by adjusting it up and down. You can't adjust it sideways.

I know that but the deal is that the pinion is offset. So you're saying that it won't work?

Run it, it'll work.

That's the answer I was looking for. Thanks.

Since you have a slight offset, you'll want to point the pinion up so it is in line with the driveshaft when viewed from the side. This will eliminate one angle, so the only angle the u-joint sees is the sideways one. You don't want compound angles if you can possibly help it, it makes two small angles into a big vibration. You will want a good traction bar to keep the pinion angle right though, or run link suspension.

I did some reading up on dana 70's and the most pinion offset that came a dana 70 is like .625 inches so i doubt that will do anything anyways.

I run Toyota axles in my Jeep and the rear is also offsetted to the right. I pointed the axle to the Tcase and even displaced and pointed slightly the driveline. After 3 years I can say you that it affects. I don't experience any vibration at the road, but definitely it kills the axle ujoint.
I replaced 3 ujoints, and used 3 driveshafts. Two exploded on the lower yoke (where AA HDs) and the one is already mounted I ignore how it will last.
I have an almost regular 4.0L auto and 35"s

I'm gonna measure the offset but I don't think it's much from looking. Couldn't I just run a spacer on one end to correct it?

Just make sure you call a parts supplier for the d70 and be sure any replacement parts are on the shelf, and resonable. I called Randy's Ring and Pinion about a d70 (I could have had for free) with a slight offset, and they said the parts were hard to get and very expensive for that one in particular. I don't know if it's the same as the one you have though. Just a thought.
