Question-
On my 98 TJ, we just swapped in a 9" and are looking for ways to raise up the shock mounts on the axle.
I was thining either lenghten the bumpstops, raise the mount on the axle tube, or use shorter shocks and risk bottoming them out at full flex.
Have any of you messed with the top mount and raised it up an inch or two? I have a 2" body lift so I was also considering welding a piece of angle iron across the frame and mounting the shocks to that.

run the angle iron. If ya run shorter shocks you only loose flex. Same with longer bump stops. Just do it right;)

Are you running the stock mounts in the rear on the bottom? Are your coilmounts hitting the shocks? Don't run shorter shocks and I don't even want to ask about the bodylift.:flipoff2: When you say raise up the mount on the axle tube you mean to lengthen it right? Not shorten the distance for the shock right? If so :rainbow: post fawking newbie. You want those shocks to be able to travel so that axle can move not stop it.

I did similar to what you are thinking. I ran a 1.5" .180 tube over the shock bolt on one side and notched it for the other side, welded to fill the notch back solid. The shock bolts are sleaved where they run through the tube to keep it from crushing. Running 9012's narrower at the top.

WTF? He registered one friggin month after you, sport. Someone got a superiority complex real quick...
Regarding the shocks, here is what I did on mine:
I lopped off the stock brackets and then ground the tubes smooth. I then cut it so that just the stud was sticking out of a slightly rounded metal backing plate. (Don't know how it is on a TJ, but I'm sure you can fab the same thing really easily)
I then welded the stud to the axle at the centerline. To attach the shocks, I just fabbed a crossmember out of some scrap rod. I think it was 3/4" tube. Anyway, I notched the center and bent it into a V and then reinforced it. Threw some shock studs though it and welded everything up solid. The crossmember bolts to the bumpstop holes in the frame. The shocks are now mounted at ^ and it works quite well actually. Plenty of travel and the ride isn't half bad either.

Ya this monkey spank thinks that by calling everyone else newbie people will think hes cool. Hes posted 182 times since May and the majority of them are moronic. Go away kid. :flipoff2: He reminds me of that guy in highschool who would try and follow you around everywhere that you could get to do anything because his self esteem was so low he didn't realize no one liked him.
Anyways to add something useful to this post. Koolaid you could try fabbing up a crossmember over the top of your frame rails as close to the tub as you can get out of tubing or angle iron. Mount it a little forward of the axle tube that will help with the ride some. Then mount one end of the shocks to the top of the axle tubes as close to the wheels as you can and the other end to the center of the new cross member you just built. Doing this puts the shocks in a inverted v shape and allows for considerably more droop and compression than mounting the shocks straight up and down. That way you do not need as long of a shock to get the same travel, because the shock moves in a arc in addition to compressing and extending.

unless you want to keep your cargo space - then you have a problem with an answer i have yet to come across

You didn't say anything about cargo space...
I don't carry a spare, but I do have my tank, toolbox and my power tank back there.
