I am a lost Suzuki guy, looking for info on Landcruiser axles.
I have the chance to pic up these axles for $50 apiece(see attachment). I have been told they are FJ-40 axles maybe '70s model?? I can't tell what year they are, because the body is gone(completely!!).
Can somebody identify these things for me? Are parts for them still available?? What gears may they have come with factory?
They look like they have been rebuilt(I pulled off the rear cover, and all the bearings look new.).
These would be perfect for my Samurai, they are almost exactly the same width, but they should be alot stronger(and better aftermarket support???).
Thanks for any info you can pass along.

Pull off one front hub and if its coarse splines its 75 or older, Which you can tell just by looking for disc brakes, if they are there.
also, if it has coarse outers, check for course inners and ball joint type axles, these are no good, but you can put in 30 spline side gears and shafts. coarse birfields are much more brittle and weak than fine spline.(i've broken lots of coarse splined birfs)I think 68 was the last year of coarse spline inners. The rear is 69 or newer if it is 30 spline. these are very strong, i think in 79 they started using the fine spline pinions which are much stronger than coarse. not sure of the year exactly, someone correct me if i am wrong.

It's a cruiser axle. You dont give much to go on. *Assuming* the u-bolt plates belong to the axles below, they are from a 1975 and newer FJ40 or FJ55. Could be coarse or fine spline, and 4.11 or 3.70 gears... Until we get better pics that is about all you can tell. Brake line/hose junction looks different than the ones I have seen...

Also, get the frame number off the outside of RH frame rail, behind the front bumper. It should read:
FJ40****** with a varying number of numbers, unless it is an 81 or newer than it will be JT3fj40************....From there we can help guestimate.

seems like a good deal if they are fine spline, and even if they are i would consider mini truck axles anyway. you get the same 30 spline shafts, but with a smaller R&P for ground clearance and slightly lighter housings, which by the way are twice what the sammy has.

Here is a pic of the trans, and t-case, if that will help anything.
It has drum brakes on the front. so that means it's old...huh?
Aren't the FJ-55, and the FJ-60 longer wheelbase than the Fj-40??
This thing is about the same length as a Jeep CJ(maybe a couple inches longer.).
The last owner of this frame had started a restoration project, he rebuilt the motor( and everything else too I think). and then sold the body for a tidy profit...then he let the frame with the new motor set for 11yrs. I'm not a big 'Cruiser fanantic(they are pretty cool though!), but that is a cryin' shame!!
The junkyard has it now, and they don't know anything about what it even is....the keep calling it a Land Rover:rolleyes: .
That's almost as bad as when someone calls my Samurai..... "That cute little Jeep"

doesnt help much, drum front 3 spd tranny went up till '74 and the fine splines were already out a couple years, theres no way of telling if it has fine splines w/o a year or pulling the diff cover. i still say you'd be better off with mini truck axles. especially since you'll want discs on the front, and the 4 pot rear drums really are crapola and expensive to repair.

its gotta be older than '72 for the vacum shifter t-case/colum shift tranny.

So where do you guys get brake stuff from?? I have contacted all of the local parts stores, only to find that 1980 is about the oldest brake shoes I can get for this model!!
I am beginning to think maybe I should look in another direction. The axles are cheap....but if I can't get parts for them, they aren't a good deal!!

Judging by the fact that this is a column shift it is probably late 60's. The rear axle is no big deal - there were no major changes in the rear axles, apart from the diff flange studs are larger in the newer 40 series. The third members are pretty much interchangeable. Older diffs (pre 79?) have coarse spline pinions - all of them have fine spline axle shafts. The front could be problematic - if its 67(?) or older, then it has the "monkey ball" front CV joints as opposed to birfields. If it has the monkey ball joints dont bother. The early drum brake birfield front ends (67 and up?) can be retro fitted with disc brakes from a Toy Mini truck - no big deal. If you are planning on running cruiser axles in your Zuki I would say get them anyway - if nothing else, the third member out of the front axle would be worth $50. The rear axle will be fine.

Oh yeah, all 40 series, apart from the 1980's, had 4.10 gears in the diffs as stock.

That tranny you got there came in cruisers til 71. So at best it's a 71.

I would like to thank you guys for all your help.
I have learned much from the great 'Cruiser gods!!!(and you didn't even bitch slap me and call me stupid newbie!!! I still get attacked on the POR zook board....even though I have probably been wheeling longer than most of those guys!!)

Your information, and patience is appreciated!!

I 2nd the notion to go with mini axles. Better aftermarket support, lighter, strong, already set up for spring over, etc.

Hey smitty,
Hook up with me, I'm in Indy and might be able to help you. I have a mini front axle for sale cheap, missing the aisin hubs. Can hook you up with some new calipers and good slightly used rotors too. I have done the brake conversions on front and rears.

A fellow member here will have a disk front he completely rebuilt for sale soon.
