: T-Case Gears
AkDale 07-18-2002, 07:58 PM Well,,, I'm going to do it. Which gears should I use in my t-case?
The Billet or the Welded gears? I am leaning twards the billet gears from Calmini. I only need the 83% reduction As I can install lower ring and pins later if need be.
Where to get the best deal?
Shawn_C 07-18-2002, 08:39 PM Trail Tough has them for 399 I believe, but thats just the gears. Calmini ones sell for 450, but you get all the gaskets and everything even the lube. FYI trail Tough has 4.16 gear sets in rebuilt x-fer for 649.
horse_with_no_name 07-18-2002, 09:16 PM WWW.PETROWORKS.COM they have them and all the parts come in the kit with oil..., or as a preassembled t-case that even i could install in 1/2 an hour............tell'em SCOTT SENT YA', THEY WILL TAKE CARE OF YOU!!!!!! P.S. GET THE GRS II AS THIS WILL LOWER YOU HIGH RANGE RATIO WITH 31" TIRES @ =STOCK' TIRES(@70 TO 1 WITH 'BIG' TIRES AND STILL BE ABLE TO USE 5TH GEAR ON THE ROAD).WWW.PETROWORKS.COM WWW.PETROWORKS.COM

Yeah go with petroworks and pay $200.00 more for the same case.......
tt grs1 649
petro GRS1 850
and the calmini kit with just the gears comes with everything petro comes with and is still cheaper.

Glad to see you found the caps lock button:flipoff2: He was asking about A GRS1 NOT 2 A GRS1:flipoff2: whats your crawlin title got to do with the price of crawler gears.

horse_with_no_name 07-18-2002, 10:01 PM You are correct , but he also stated that he could / would change rear gears, and as Istated the GRS II is easier to install than diff gears and lets you use 5th gear ...for gods sakes hes got 90 lbs of tire at each corner and I bet he would like to clean the treads seeing as he lives in ak..
horse_with_no_name 07-18-2002, 10:11 PM ok as per post get the cheapest gears you can ..... then change the diffs ..... then realize that you need deeper x-fer gears.....
or get the deepest x-fer gears that you can get and probably leave it that way., thereby saving time, money and skin off your knuckles in the long run. I hope this makes it clear what I was trying to to explain.
CragRat 07-18-2002, 10:14 PM I use the Cal Mini 5.81 gearset, slow to crawl and 75mph on the road.
horse_with_no_name 07-18-2002, 10:21 PM Shawnc because I know who builds them and how they are built,
if you look at the kits pics(calmini-petroworks) you see you are getting more for your money(small parts that should be replaced when rebuilt) with the petroworks kit .
horse_with_no_name 07-18-2002, 10:25 PM oh yeah, Shawnc why would you want to change gears in the diffs if you didn't have to, besides the lower you go, the weaker the pinion gear gets.
Shawn_C 07-18-2002, 10:28 PM I see what you are saying on the petro v Calmini. I personally am going with TT (pick up my 4.16 on wednesday) because I know Brent and have been impressed by his work. I probably wouldn't buy anything from calmini, rather support the smaller vendors that I talk with frequently. I'm sure petroworks makes a great kit. I've talked with people their several times, not bought anything yet, but I haven't heard anything bad about them.:D
Shrock 07-18-2002, 10:43 PM yeah go low and get the SUMO 6.1's from AAPA.
rockzooki 07-18-2002, 10:59 PM ive got the calmini's. the price was about the cheapest i found for the kit. easy install too.with 33's, id love to be ALOT lower.oh well, toy axles coming soon with 5.29's, if that aint low enough, then ill go with dual t cases.
horse_with_no_name 07-18-2002, 11:20 PM shawnc guess how much all the other parts you need to build a zuk case cost..,. thrust washers, shims, needle roller bearings, and gaskets, and oil to name a few.bet its about $200. At Petroworks you get what you pay for and then some!
fatkid 07-18-2002, 11:32 PM I run a Calmini 4.16 for now, if your wanting to go into real deep gears don't even bother with the Zuk t-case.:)
horse_with_no_name 07-18-2002, 11:37 PM Hey, FATKID do you live near SCOTT GOMEZ editor of off-road .com suzuki section
fatkid 07-18-2002, 11:47 PM Not sure, I don't think that I have had the chance to meet Scott. I do however live in Ridgecrest, Ca.:)

zukiman 07-19-2002, 02:08 AM Scott Gomez lives in Crestline. I happen to be staying at his house with him at the present, but I'll be gone in a couple days.
mini4by 07-19-2002, 04:35 AM Whats the Hi range ratio of the Calmimi 5.8's?
Tusker 07-19-2002, 06:04 AM Stock high range is 1.41:1 and I think the high range on the Calmini set is 1.75:1 or a 24% reduction in high range.
AkDale 07-19-2002, 07:13 AM Thanks for all the input. Anyone had any problems with the welded gearsets?
I called Rocky Road yesterday and asked about availability and they said that they were back-ordered-- That the guy that is cutting and welding the gears can't come close to keeping up with all of the orders. At least a 3 week wait.
Looked like their prices were the best at $490.00 exchange.

AkDale 07-19-2002, 08:26 AM Anyone delt with Hawk?
They advertise a complete 83.6-12.2% calmini reduction kit for $450.00. I'm going to call them as soon as they open to see if they have any of these billet gears in stock.
Shawn_C 07-19-2002, 11:05 AM Do yourself a favor and stay away from Hawks. I won't get into it but I haven't had good dealings with him. Also call Trail Tough I called for my 4.16 set and he said he would have them ready to pick up on wednesday for me. Brent is the Man, I know of a case that went bad, it was his, went through several owners in a couple of year period and he replaced it as soon as he found out he had made it. :D
AkDale 07-20-2002, 08:03 AM Just ordered a set of calmini billet gears from northern 4x4 in Anch. Alaska. 500.00 with freight and northern is going to take care of sending the core back. Good deal up here cause the freight is killer on everything thet I order.

Not for 500.00 if he did I'll take two!
spencurai 07-21-2002, 02:20 AM i really like trailtough and calmini. RRO is nice in their ideas but customer service is lacking severely. they have no idea how to deliver a product when ordered. i run calmini 4.16 gears. i got them literally weeks before the 6:1 came out from everywhere else and i am bummed. now i gotta get rid of my gears and get lower ones. if you are an occasional wheeler go 4.16. if you wanna get it weekly go 6:1.
AkDale 07-21-2002, 06:03 AM I wish I could have afforded the 6. gears

i have ordered from Brent at T.T. and recieved my stuff just about before hanging up the phone:)
i have ordered stuff from R.R.O. on a Tuesday and it was here on the following Monday!
not to mention Glenn helped me out with a part i was having extreme difficulty getting up here. gave it to me for virtually free-i have nothing but good to say about the guy, personally.:)
