ok so i have a 76 F.100 with a 360 V8, Np435, and swapped Np205. I have come to the point were I want to build up the engine some more, but need a little help. i would like to change the 360 into a 390, cause I would like more torque, I heard that all I have to do is swap the 390 crank, pistons, and rods into my 360, is this true and what parts would you guys use? I would also like to upgrade to a 4 barrel carb, what would you guys use and would it help to change the manifold? Thanks for the help, and Aloha.:rasta:

Ah the FE block.....fords bastard child and love of my life. Yeah....thats pretty much the case, swap the 390 parts in. Buuuuuttt, the 360 is still quite a torque monster if you just wanna build it.(much cheaper, considering a decent intake for an FE will run over 3 bills)My first FE build was fairly cheap and easy. Stock intake, exhaust manifold and heads ported and port matched.heads shaved .015.holley 750(rebuilt junkyard find). small SSI cam (from PAW)and a pertronix ignition. Had tons of balls and even more low end grunt. After that i moved more toward car builds. But for 360 Cubic inches.....helluva ride

Use car 2V pistons so you have 9.5:1 compression instead of 8.4:1...

The 360 is essentially a 390 block with a 352 crank and rods. The 390 guts will fit. If you can find a 428 crank it will make a 410 with the right pistons. Or spend some money for a 417, 431 or 445 stroker kit. But then you need better heads, etc. etc$$$

ya i think im going to go the 390 route, im going to order the parts from summit next week, the only crank i could find was from eagle, but there is a but load of pistons & rods which ones wok the best, i have only built 22rʻs for friends, and this is my first V8 build, what should i look for and what would be the best carb to run? thanks

It really depends on what you want from the motor and what your budget is. LIke i said previously, the 360 has HUGE grunt down low, and the money you save by not stroking up would be well worth it. FE parts are EXPENSIVE!!! If you are building for torque, then the stock crank, rods and pistons(<---not the used pistons)
are plenty. very beefy stock parts. If you have access to one, dig thru a pick,n,pull/junkyard for the stock 390 pieces and send them in for some love while your block is being machined(you aren't skipping this step right?)good money saver, and all the parts are well "seasoned". Run a rochester quadrashit carb. I know this sounds scary, but when they are tuned right, nothing but F.I. beats them off-road. other than that, it pretty much depends on deep your wallet runs. I've built a few FE's, from cheap to top ramen this month expensive and loved everyone.

Only problem you get when you swap in a 428 crank is that they are externally balanced "weight on flywheel"
You need to have the correct flywheel or flexplate for the 428 becasue of this. Unlike the 352, 360, and 390 where parts are interchangeable.
The best thing to do when using 428 internals is to have everything balanced neutral "internal balanced".
This takes a little more cash but it is alot better end result. Allowing you to use any FE flywheel or flexplate which are easier to find and are cheaper.

ok thanks for the help with the swap, iʻm going to order the stock parts through a friend, because he has worked on old ford V8ʻs before. the rochester quadrashit carb, is something that i havenʻt thought about, my uncle told me that demon makes a good offroad carb, and i have been looking at a holley truck avenger , out of these three which would you guyʻs use?
