wngrog 07-19-2002, 07:31 AM All that is left is a battery box, exhaust, extend my rear driveshaft and make all the CRAP (Computer, Airbox, Etc) fit under the hood.
WTF happend to all that room under the hood I used to have:eek:
I am trying to save my blower......it DOES get cold down here, believe it or not and that heater is nice :flipoff2:
Here is an engine shot:
wngrog 07-19-2002, 07:32 AM Engine 2
wngrog 07-19-2002, 07:35 AM This is a flat belly skidplate that is built out of 3/8 steel with a built in tranny crossmember.
It is 1" lower than the frame with a small "bulge" built in for the Atlas II.
fj40charles 07-19-2002, 07:49 AM Nolen,
Looking good. I like the skid plate. Very well designed and simple to make.

rugburn 07-19-2002, 07:50 AM Nolen,
Do you know where the ECM resided in the Firebird?
Can it go in the glovebox or in the passenger side of the interior?
My LT-1 came from a 1994 Caprice classic and the ECM and harness allow for maximum distance from underhood temps.
You mentioned earlier that the airbox was from a Roadmaster.
Ever consider just runing a K&N from the mouth of the throttle body?
Looking good and hope to see thsi beast run soon!!!!!!
Yellow beers all around!
Kyle LePage 07-19-2002, 07:55 AM Looks great! Will it be ready in a week?

How is it that you big-hatted Texan's gotta keep yer heaters for those "wittle bitty chillie" mornings while us Wisconsinites seem to ditch ours?!?
Man you just ain't been wheelin' til you've used a charcoal grill to thaw your tranny in the morning.... :D :D :D :D :D
Oh, BTW: Looking good....can't wait to run with it at BHCC-03!

The ECM was under the hood on the firebird. In fact, it must be out and not in the vehicle. Don't know if that would matter on a Cruiser with no top, but on the Heeps they build they make sure to put them under the hood. Something about heat being good
The Roadmaster airbox was too big, so I an going to use the Firebird box. It is a little smaller. I am going to use that cool resonator that goes on the top of the engine on the roadmaster :D
As for K and N filters.....not for this engine! When I pulled the 2F out, I pulled the carb off for a peek and there was some Moab red dust that had made it past the oiled pre filter and the oiled K and N filter.
Not much, but enough for me not to want a damn K and N anymore.
I am a fan of disposable AC Delco paper filters. Use them and lose them. They are not too tightly woven and they are cheap insurance in the dust bowl that I usually wheel in!
GloNDark 07-19-2002, 08:22 AM BITCHIN!!!!!
What's the horse power/torque rating on that motor??

NO NO NO!
Heat is NOT good for the ECM. The "weather pack" ECM's are designed to go under the hood, but with the idea of keeping the harness as short as possible. Typically you want them mounted up front, so cooling air is passing over them. Do not mount it in the back, on the firewall, or anyplace you have heat buildup.
Mount the harness so it "drops" down from the ECM, before continuing on. Water will run along the harness, and the drop gives a place for it to run off, and not collect around the connectors. Ditto on wires to/from engine and places. Think of everything being dripping wet, and how the water drips off the cable.
SKID PLATE: Looks good. Get everything else done, then come back and WELD 3/16" thick 1" wide strap done along the path of the bolt heads, leaving room around the bolts to remove them in the future. After getting dragged over enough rocks, the bolt heads tend to get worn down enough to make drilling them out the only way to remove them. PITA.
Looking good!

wngrog 07-19-2002, 08:47 AM Relax Tom, that is exactly why Sunray is doing this and not me....Rodney does these in his sleep.....
As for Horsepower, this engine is a little hotter than a stock LT-1, it came out of a special edition 1995 Firebird called a Firehawk.
Anyone remember these?

342 Ft Lbs torque (4000 RPM)
Car did 0-60 in 4.9 seconds :flipoff2:
Can't wait to screw with the children in the Heeps around town :D

You are gonna be chirping the 42's down the main drag in no time!
Edit: That skidplate is wicked. Looks like Sunray has done a really great job on Kate. :)
rugburn 07-19-2002, 09:16 AM Is your plenum the flat black plastics hollow dude with the V-8
MultiPort Fuel Injection logo embossed on the top.

Deep South Cruisers 07-19-2002, 09:22 AM a friend of mine had one of those FireHawks (SLP engineering) one of the fastest cars I've ever ridden in

I swear it is a Be Cool....maybe Sloan can get the specs out of them since he knows the guys, but they said they had it made especially for them

RHINO 07-20-2002, 09:54 AM awsome nolen, its comming along real nice.
it will be funny to mess with the kids and their heeps.
on the skidplate, what about counter sinkin the bolts, that way nothin, not even the strap hangs down. i'm using some cool big counter sunk screws, they are like the ones on wilburs stock mirrors, except bigger and allen head.

Hey Man,
I asked about that and they have used those type of countersunk bolts before and with all the flex the skidplate sees, they always work loose.
They said to run these grade 8 bolts and replace as they get boogered up.
I was worried about the same thing, but they have gon ethrough this on a couple of other rigs that see a lot of use :D
Nolen, what's up with that alternator. Looks beefy. Stats please.
