: "GREEN PIG" fullwidth build. warning lots of pics!
nolan 05-20-2008, 05:47 PM So for some time now i have collected my parts to fullwidth my cruiser and have never got around to it. recently i had a itch to start it and some pressure from friends.
i will do my best to post pics, answer questions, and give info and specs. this is my first rig and iv been been building it since i was 16. Iv only had it for 3 years so yes u can say im young.
alright so in this project my intentions are to run a dana 44 front end and a 14 bolt rear end.
i will be changing my transmission and t- case as well. i will be running an nv 4500 mated to a dana 300 with a twin stick conversion. i will install gears in the t-case later down the road.
nolan 05-20-2008, 06:04 PM so the first step was to disassemble the front end. i really hate drills and grinders:shaking:
so here is the start to the front end. it sat like this for a few weeks after i broke steering studs. then i decided to take it out.http://a66.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/83/l_5952e7aa265d2183e1435aec619aa541.jpg
then i got to work!
http://a209.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/121/l_262a3c4d86c676351281fb60d183baa0.jpg
after i got the frame clean and ready for the outboard i built my front hanger
http://a206.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/11/l_e95a6cd217cbbb58ddae331f5669641d.jpg
http://a705.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/31/l_6ef139920e2ede7227ca65558ad981d0.jpg
after i finished the hanger i got right down to bussiness to mounting it
http://a418.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/120/l_54344bab52e92b3ac1ad0349252d3b71.jpg
im really happy the way it looks.
http://a359.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/26/l_9068dc97debf0c588082d3c6897ca7c6.jpg
so i got the springs mounted and the front axle under it but wasnt sure how i was gonna do the shackle hangers in this pic
http://a272.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/126/l_5e03f8d83b2b450e9ecb17fdfd4c7bef.jpg
after it was able to roll again i got it in the garage and built the shackle hangers an painted my work.

thats all i got for today.
nolan 05-20-2008, 06:06 PM i was super happy with the front end, i think it looks really clean

nolan 05-20-2008, 06:13 PM after i got everything down with the front suspension it was time to get the rear axle in.
so here is the old axle comming out

http://a425.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/12/l_7aa2c4ddf0eea4e90ee281aca8d1ba38.jpg

nolan 05-20-2008, 06:16 PM will post 2mrw but right now its dinner time.so im off:D
fj40forlife 05-20-2008, 07:10 PM How wide is that thing? Looks nice
Eric
nolan 05-20-2008, 10:31 PM the front measures 87in from outside to outside of tire. the rear is narrower offcourse. i will have more pics 2mrw
LC Hamma 05-21-2008, 05:40 AM
Wondering why you downgraded the front axle? Plans for a 60 soon? Looks kinda  fenderless w/ that width & those 35's. Any plans to go up in tire size? What's in the pumpkins - open or locked? Nice tranny choice :grinpimp:
wngrog 05-21-2008, 06:12 AM I would guess the D44 works well because of the matching bolt patterns and width. He can throw some $$ at it and make it plenty strong, just like a Toyota axle.
You do very nice fab work..the front is super clean.
nolan 05-21-2008, 01:12 PM

well i bought the 14bolt and 44 in a package deal. im going to find a good deal on a 60 and build it while i have this. i dont have that kind of money to buy certain things right when i need them.i usually look for the deal! the tsl's are 38.5 on rockstomper bead locks. i bought the tires used and grooved them with my neighbors fork lift tire groover. the 60 will bolt right in and i will do high steer and hydro assist:D
nolan 05-21-2008, 01:16 PM the axles have 4:10s with detroits. i will be buying 39.5 iroks at he end of the summer but for now my 38.5 have half tread. i decided to go with the low-max 4to1 for my t-case,plus a twin stick, and a clocking ring.
nolan 05-21-2008, 01:22 PM here is a pic of the bead locks. they are rockstomper and were put together by WFO in auburn

nolan 05-21-2008, 01:32 PM did i mention i shaved the rear housing three inches:smokin:
http://a144.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/1/l_3e4fa97778aa2441a133bfa411e65877.jpg
so i went with the great lakes disk conversion. picked up the rotors and calipers at "autozone":D

nolan 05-21-2008, 01:40 PM that night i pulled the rear end out to weld up the perches
http://a823.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/114/l_5b612faa5ec07783addf98a10a02a65e.jpg
so after i got it all welded up and painted i forgot about my trac-bar mounts and had to pull iut back out and get the brackets on :shaking:

have you shaved the ring gear?
nolan 05-21-2008, 03:13 PM my dad took it to his work but he only took a 1/8 of an inch of even though i showed him how much has to come off. i took it to the machine shop and its still there:mad3: the carrier is in. there is about a quarter inch between the carrier ring and bottom of the housing. so a little massage with the grinder and the ring gear shaved it will be back in:)
JohnToyRatRig 05-21-2008, 05:08 PM Good lookin built :smokin:
bigmudder 05-21-2008, 07:25 PM mind if i ask.
how far did you move the rear spring perches in each?
i moved mine 2 1/4 inches in each, havnt tried bolting it up yet.
nolan 05-21-2008, 10:37 PM the rear is moved back 4 inches. the springs measure 53inches long and 3inches wide. i built new perches and put them in the same location as the stock ones. they are an offset pin so im running the short side in the back for wheel base and so they dont hang to far past the rear bumper. here is a pic of length and how far back the pin sits.

nolan 05-21-2008, 10:41 PM tonight i orderd shock hoops from trail-gear and shock tabs from ruff stuff specialties. i cant wait to start welding little stuff on and making it look sexy:D i bought a bellhousing a few days ago but it hasnt shown up.
nolan 05-21-2008, 10:51 PM i thought i would post a pic of the tranny and tell what has been done to it.
nv4500 that was dirt cheap and overhauled. the tranny is a 2wd chevy tranny which has a granny gear at 6.5:1. the 4wd version is only 5:1.
so then i changed the output shaft to a dodge and ordered a tale housing from quad 4x4. i ordered an aluminum but they sent me a cast irion one. the only problem is the inner mating surface has to be milled out an 1/8 of an inch for the t-case to mount flush. here is a pic of the tranny with the new tale housing.

bigmudder 05-22-2008, 08:17 PM for moving spring perches, i meant the perches on the axle.
dont you have to move them towards the pumpkin a few inches?
i was just wondering how far in you moved them
nolan 05-22-2008, 08:55 PM for moving spring perches, i meant the perches on the axle.
dont you have to move them towards the pumpkin a few inches?
i was just wondering how far in you moved them
they are at the stock landcruiser spring width. im not sure what that is off the top of my head. i couldnt say how much they have been moved in since i didnt measure the location of the ones that i originally torched off. when u said spring perches i didnt know u meant "how far i in boarded my spring pads":D i didnt get ya sorry bud
nolan 05-22-2008, 09:01 PM this is something i usually wouldnt post but my little sister got it for me and i thought it went good with my truck:laughing: alot of my friends relate to the sticker saying it will be finished being built when pigs fly! they mean never:D unless i make it out to surf and terf:homer:

lildave 05-22-2008, 09:18 PM what are you doing for a rear diff cover?? there's not alot to seal against, or any bolt holes. other than that its a great build. will you make it to rubthion?
numtel 05-23-2008, 02:00 AM Surf and turf huh? Maybe this year I can drive down there and make it back without cracking my tranny.
This full width swap looks really awesome man. I like the front hangars and such. I can't wait to see what this thing looks like done. You gonna be at rubithon?
nolan 05-23-2008, 02:37 AM i would really feel spoiled to get to go. i hope i will be finished and ready:)
thanks for the props ben:smokin:
nolan 05-23-2008, 02:42 AM what are you doing for a rear diff cover?? there's not alot to seal against, or any bolt holes. other than that its a great build. will you make it to rubthion?
i trimmed the cover and beefed it up a little. this pic wa before i filled in the old bolt holes. im going to drill and tap the bottom of the housing and run two bolts on the bottom of the cover. im not to fond of my welds with this

the bottom of the housing is 1/2 inch plate? its identical to the shave in the 14 bolt thread
Medusa 05-23-2008, 07:28 AM Over the years I have become less enamored with shaved differential housings. In my experience two things are likely to happen: 1) you will fall or roll off a ledge or big rock and land squarely on the diff ( I think it is a Murphy's Law thing) breaking or denting the thin wall of the shaved bottom; or 2) if you wheel hard for several years the bottom of the diff will be worn away from dragging it over rocks. In the past two years I have spend FAR more time and effort building up the bottom of the diff than I originally spend shaving it off:(
Also, I may have missed it at the beginning, but I am curious about why you want to be full width.
KrustyKruiser 05-23-2008, 09:03 AM Over the years I have become less enamored with shaved differential housings.
Me too, but that's because the housing generally ends up with a small lip on the underside and it is difficult to keep a good seal with the diff cover - my garage floor has quite an oil stain from that issue :mad3:

to keep away from my body,to gain more stability, it looked like shit with the yota axles:shaking: sure i could have got a cut down front and a dually rear but i love the width:smokin:
nolan 05-26-2008, 11:10 AM :(nothing new. didnt work on it this weekend. still waiting for parts and my bell housing. holidays suck:flipoff2:
Wilson 05-27-2008, 07:49 AM Looks good! Why not flip your front hanger around and gain some approach? It looks like you could add 1-2" of extra WB. If you're trying to keep it low, every little bit helps, with bigger tires. Your axle is now going to move back as the suspension compresses. Also from what I've seen, I wouldn't trust the weld on top of the 14b cast pumpkin.
nolan 05-28-2008, 12:59 AM ya i know. i use nickel rod for housing welds and i get it for free
nolan 05-30-2008, 04:28 PM these came in the mail today. 14in shock hoops.
http://a688.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/55/l_6af34b65bc812abdd46bae0f73b88e3f.jpg
before i mount them i have to drill out the rivets on the stock shock towers.so in the mean time today i mounted my shock mountes on the axles and some walmart lights on my knucles for rock lights.

nolan 06-02-2008, 02:04 AM i got an ok amount of stuff done today. i mounted my shock hoops. wasnt sure if i was going to mount my shocks straight up and down or angled back so i settled for in between. i havent got the original towers off yet cause i cant get to the 2 rivits on top of the frame with a drill so i gonna burn them off later with my friends torch.
