Will a 77 Crown Vic 460 have higher compression and breathe better than an 83 F 350 460 because of all the smog crap in the early 80s? Both run and wondering which would be the best to freshen up without boring?
Google couldn't help me out. How bout it Big Block gurus?

im probly wrong but my guess is the truck 460 is more of a torque engine and the crown vic is prolly a hp motor (higher end). maybe sum one else could chime in

No Crown Vic for '77 just an LTD/Custom 500. The only ones that came with a 460 in '77 was the police model. It was 8:1, 226 HP, 371 Ft. Lbs. at 1600 rpm. I would guess that since it was only available as a police package that it would be the best choice. None of my books gave any numbers on the truck 460.

i'll be darned, only 8:1 comp. Anybody know what the 83 truck 460s compression would be? Thanks for the comebacks.

The truck 460 is also 8:1. 460's 1972 and later are in the 8s for compresion ratio.

Thanks, sounds like the compression is a push. Will the 77 460 heads breathe better than the 83 due to less smog requirements?

not much different, if you want to help flow look at the exhaust. Theres a huge bump in the way!!! grind it out and smooth the exh ports, gasket match the intake and run it!! dont smooth out the intake runners to much, it will make the fuel puddle.

Whats the casting # on the heads? It's above the exhaust ports near the valve cover rail. I'm guessing they are the same casting, D3VE. The blocks will be different as they went external balance in '79. I don't think there will be any other real difference in the engines.

Thanks for the comebacks, gonna use my 83 since the 77 was gonna cost me $300 to buy and obviousy not enough difference to be worth it.
