How interchangable are parts from these two axles?
Say from the spindle out. My brother swears up and down that he took the good brakes from a dana 44 with a bad pinion and put them on his 10 bolt front end. Basically everything from the hub on out. Is this possible? Are these axles that interchangable??
???
Thanks

Everything is interchangable from the axle tube out. Knuckles, spindles, hubs, rotors, lockouts, brakes, outer axle shaft and u-joint (297/760), are all interchangable. The inner axles are different along with the rest of the differential. Some 10 bolts were 30 spline but the spline is different than a 44.
Hope this helps

ALMOST everything from the housing end out is interchangeable, some earlier 1/2 tons used a small bearing spindle that won't work with the 10-bolt hubs, and some Dana 44's had 267 joints. Somewhere in there they swapped from the tie rod on top of the knuckle to below, so make sure knuckles match from side to side, other than that, mix and match as you see fit.

This may sound dumb, but how can you tell the difference between a 10 bolt and 44?

The 10 bolt has an extremely round pumpkin. Where as the 44 is more angular.
Also the 44 I have has "44" casted into the webbing, and the 10 bolt has a 10. Check out www.drivetrain.com they have diagrams of the pumpkins, once you see the 2 you will be able to tell at a glance which is which.
