Well,

With the rain and snow this weekend, my camping and wheeling trip with my wife, kids and close friends did not become a reality. (Woulda been GREAT if it was just me and the guys, but the wife and kids woulda been miserable)

On Saturday, I REALLY needed to get out of the house, so the family did a little day trip: INTO THE BELLY OF THE BEAST!!

That's right folks, we risked life and limb to see "Tree-Hugger Central" AKA Muir woods! Just North of San Fransico.

We are very lucky to have made it out alive.

Just a few tidbits from this day trip:

Yes, they have a 1st amendment area. :shaking: I proceeded to the kiosk to ask where the SECOND Amendment area was. After a bit of confusion on the kiosk attendant's part, I was lectured on the fact that firearms ARE NOT permitted in Muir woods.

This is an actual sign in the mens room. Yes folks, a WATERLESS urinal. Just how far can we push enviromentally friendly stuff?

Even the pisser has an "Eco" label

I wonder if the people who visit this place realise that the decking here is made out of WOOD! (It would even be funnier if it was redwood decking! LOL!) You walk down this right after you read a display on how evil loggers are destroying the Universe.

Metal grates sunk into the dirt to elimate eviromental damage from THOUSANDS of hikers in Muir woods. How much to sink this stuff on cetain parts of the 'Con?

You cannot deny the beauty of the old growth. Reading some of the literature, it makes it seem that THESE are the only redwoods left in the world.

Isn't this someone's avatar??

Now for the serious part:

People are constantly being educated on being "green" This one park sees a ton of vistors a year and gives a certain adgenda a TON of exposure.

We need to do the same. The public needs to be educated in some way that the 4x4 community recreates in such a way that we do NOT do as much damage to the enviroment as thought by the general public.

They still see us as "Monster trucks" tearing thru the forest floor, flying confederate flags and killing bunnies with beer cans thrown from our rigs. They see pics of our rigs and do not realise that the average speed on a trail is less than 5 mph.

I think we need to start up a PR campaign to educate users on our SPORT and what lengths many organizations have gone thru to minimize damage.

I think an RTF/FOTR/FOE/Friends of whoever should get a booth at the State Fair and local fairs to do this. hand-out literature, show off some rigs, play a video of rigs on the 'Con and FOTR workparties etc.

Any ideas or input?

Kurt,
OHV users are light years ahead in the waterless urinal world. Barrett Lake, Ellis and Walker Hill are all waterless - and, Ellis and Walker Hill are also biodegradable :grinpimp:
Give me a call. Gotta couple of ideas that might have promise.

I don't know who that could be?...My avatar is within the ENF though.

I was amazed to make contact with you on the handhelds from Georgetown to Disco this weekend. Those ham radios rock.

x2 That was bad-ass...

I wish the 805 was not so spotty for me though so I could hear more stuff from the 'Con

The concept of Going Green, while trendy, is facing us every day, more and more. It's our turn. Dale's Take Back the Green campaign fits in with my recent article on Going Green in Motorized Recreation. While I might have to gag to get it down, I can do it - on my terms.

Check it out here: http://www.delalbright.com/Articles/go_green.html
