I will be installing a 5.0 in my 84 cj7 and I need to know what flywheel to use??? I did a search on the subject and I think I got
some idea but still have some questions. Ok I have a 92 mustang engine without any flywheel, I got a truck 302 flywheel that fits the engine but I dont know what year it came from. Now on my search I found that you have to have a 50 oz. flywheel and if you get it from another ford vehicle you have to balance it. Now since my engine came without a flywheel, how can I balance the truck flywheel??? or how can I know if I have to balance it or not??? And one last thing the truck flywheel I got is heavier than the stock one(i checked with the parts store, but they didnt know anything about the balancing on them), will this make a big difference on how the engine will perform or will do any damage to the engine??
any help will be appreciated.
tks

your going to have to use a mustang 5.0 flyweel
This flywheel will weigh 33lbs, is counterbalanced and will have
a tooth count of 157 teeth, should be 14.21" in diameter
If you want to have it balanced it is possible...would recommend that you do the crank and balancer also.
Have the Flywheel resurfaced b4 you have it balanced!!
Any good engine shop should be able to steer you in the direction of a balancing shop
Remember to use the right bell housing for the flywheel or the starter will not work

NO,NO, NO!!!
You will want to use a flywheel from an F150 with a 5.0.
That will allow you to run an 11" clutch that the trucks run.
The hot ticket is actually to use a straight 6 300 CI flywheel and have it ballanced for a 5.0,....but you will need to find a resurfacing shop that really knows there stuff. When I was in Las Vegas at the time I was swapping the 5.0, the shops, I went to could not fathom what I was talking about, but I have freinds in other cities who have said there shops knew excactly what to they were talking about.

Take the thuck flywheel to a good machine shop and have them balance it for your 92 mustang 302 specs. Should not be any problem. Last one I had done cost me $50.00.

Well will see if the shops down here know what I will need. Another question, the flywheel I have measures around 14 inch in diameter(aprox) and it came from an older f-truck with the 302
engine, will this thing work with the 5.0?? Also will the truck clutch works with my T-18 tranny(this tranny came from a jeep not a ford truck) .

I highly doubt the flywheel u have will work with out being balanced. Most likley u have a 28 oz bal on it if u got it out of an older truck. I believe ford changed the balance from 28 to 50 around 83 or so. The flywheel u DO want to get is one from say a 85 - 91 f150/250 with a 5.0 This flywheel will have 164 teeth and have a 50 oz bal. YOU DO NOT WANT A 157 tooth flywheel your starter wont reach!

I used a bell housing, clutch and flywheel from a 1 ton van with the I-6 then had it balanced to the 5.0. The flywheel weight does not matter, its just the imbalance. The I-6 is neutrally balanced. There are alot of vans in the junk yards and then you can get all the parts from the same vehicle making finding new parts easier. The mustang clutch will not hold up to the abuse of the jeepin. The van is a 11" like posted above.

You have to use a flywheel that will work with the bellhousing you're going to be using. The Mustang one probably won't work with a truck bellhousing.

When I swapped out my auto tranny for a manual in my Mustang, the balance wasn't quite right. It caused a vibration. I tried three different flywheels, but they all did the same thing. I didn't think it was too big of a deal and ran it, but it eventually got worse until it caused the balancer on the front to come loose. I had to dissassemble the engine, replace the crank and balancer and send all the pistons and rods to the machione shop to have it balanced. So, if you get an engine that's not quite balanced to stock specs like mine was you're going to have to get it re-balanced.
