Which motor/tranny?

What are you trying to do? Hydraulic sure makes custom stuff easy.

Might be worth your time to go to a yard and see how they work with your own eyes.

Usually there is a bracket on the frame and one on the motor, then the rod that pivots between them......if that makes any sense.

I've heard some people have a problem with manual clutches on 4x4's because the frame flex can make the clutch disenguage or hard to disenguage.

well I will be installing a ford 302 on a cj7 and since the cj7 has a manual linkage, I was thinking I maybe able to keep it if I know how the ford system works.
