Low(er) geared M50D?

My M50D in my ranger with the OHV 4.0 is about to take a big old crap on me, so I've been looking into a transmission swap. I want something with lower gears and was looking at a T18 or 19 but was told on another forum it won't work; no other information except that it won't work because I'd need an adapter that no one makes.

So, I was thinking, would it be at all possible to rebuild the weak-ass M50D and run it with part of a transfer case so that the gear ratios are permenantly altered? Like the back half of the case without the range selector? Does that make sense? Possible? Stupid fucking question?

There is an adapter for a np435 to your 4.0

You could gut a 2.9 or 2.3 M5OD and put the gears in yours to give you a little lower gearing.

The tcase idea would be a little low for the street if you are talking about a doubler stuck in low.

btw, if perhaps what i'm doing will work, which i'm pretty sure its going to, IF i can get this machine shop to make what i need, If anyone is interested, I am willing to sell kits and detailed Installations to make it very simple

i know it isn't much, but you might look into getting the gears from a 2.3/3.0 m5od put in the 4.0 m5od case, they are lower than the 4.0 version, IIRC 2.3/3.0 is 3.93:1 and 4.0 is around 3.3:1 first gear.

The 2.9 M5OD also has the lower 1st gear.. but is harder to find than the 2.3/3.0 versions.
