I posted this in general, but didn't get much of a response so i thought i'd try here. I'm looking at the Eartec TD902 radio for driver to spotter communications. Hoping to be able to actually hear spotting advice over the buggy. Does anyone have any experience with this or any other setup?
What do you other competitors recommend? Thanks

We are using the Blueant Bluetooth units. There's a thread on here somewhere. Last year we had the TD900 and didn't like those nearly as much as the Blueant. Got them off ebay for $100 each. Good range, good noise cancellation, all day battery life. Hard to beat for the cost.

I don't have permission to access this page. When i looked into the BlueAnt products the only one i found for use for helmets was designed for motorcycles and was called the Interphone system. You could use it with your cell phone, music, and speak with other people with the setup within 490 feet on an intercom style system. Does this sound like the right one?

You need to PM Lance to get access to that page/area. I am the guy who put others onto the Blue Ant Systems. They are very popular down here in australia. Very Clear, No crossed lines, no annoying cables and everything attaches to the helmet. Can be a pain to set the spotters mic up if he is wearing a X-sports style helmet with open ears as the mic and earpiece really needs to be attached to the helmet. Here is a link to the Ebay seller others have bought from. It appears they have increased there price a little though. http://cgi.ebay.com/BLUEANT-INTERPHONE-MOTORCYLE-BLUETOOTH-HEADSET-HS830_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ20336QQihZ004QQit emZ140237672021QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

You need 2 of these to work. You do not need a phone in the system they talk directly to each other. Some have said they take a little to set up to talk to each other but once you get used to it its very simple.

PCI - for in the same vehicle: INSANE! That is what JT runs and Eric & I used the in Moab

I have used the TD900's both in car and from spotter, they work alright, but leave a lot too be desired.

There are defianatly better in car coms gear on the market than the Blue Ant. But very few allow the driver and navigater to stay in contact outside of the vehicle. And most cost an arm and a leg although i guess you generally get what you pay for. For a budget system the Blue Ant system works perfectly.

You would need to velcro the mic and reciever to your head.:flipoff2:
I really dont see any way this would work without some type of head gear. The unit clamps to your helmet, then the mic velcros to your helmet. We had to buy new helmets because we could not figure out a way to mount in the old Harley style half helmets.

Damn, thats what I was afraid of...both mine, and my spotters helmets are open ear (mostly so we can hear better without radios:flipoff2:...go figure:rolleyes:)

yeah, i was kinda bummed about not being able to use them without a helmet, but i'm sure a person with only a slight mechanical mind could figure something out. I thought about mounting them to my regular hat when not wearing helmet. I think you could use some stiff wire and make up a way to hold them. thats all the other radios headphones have is a stiff wire that goes around your head and loops around your other ear. Plus, the directions say you that if you have to mount the earpiece a ways from your ear, that there is a sound setting that turns way up. I haven't tried it yet though.

Sound way up is mandatory for me. My hearing is not great. My spotter also likes the sound all the way up. He does not complain about his hearing.

Im sure a set of headphones could be modified to hold the earpiece and mic. Some of the older styles are fairly bulky and solid. You may even be able to mount the receiver on them.

I am in one of the teams that is using the interphone in australia. My spotter wears one of those skate style helmets that have open ears. we just go some thin plastic and slipped it between the shell and the foam of the helmet. hangs down enough to velcro the earpiece to, and seems pretty solid.
One of the best advantages over the eartecs is that you don't have a seperate unit to clip somewhere on your body/buggy or a big long cord that gets snagged and damaged.

also they have about 100 hours use between charges, which is awesome. never have to worry about charging them during comps.

I have a skater style helmet that I used when sky diving that covers the ears. I think that they are still available. The ear piece is right next to my ear and works great.

We have been using the TD900 radios for several years. The drivers headset leaves a lot to be desired, but earlier this year, we bought the Eartec "Monarch" headset, which works fantastic. It is a stereo headest for the full duplex system and works with or without a helmet. We installed them in our helmets, and they work fantastic. You might also look at a digicom system. A little more expensive thatn the TD900's, but they work well too.

All are available from http://www.eartec.com

They also sell re-man units at a fraction of the cost of new.
