Got a chance to pick up a 93 cummins 1 ton that was rear ended.
owner will sell me just the drivetrain 5.9 diesel ,five speed manual trans and transfer case.
The engine has no damage and 58K on it.

Any thoughts on price to offer him?

I know that many people sell used Cummins engines for close to $1000. The drivetrain that you speak of is a pretty decent tranny and may be a 205, some are. I think it is worth quite a bit of money, maybe $2000.

But obviously offer him something much lower than that, like $500.

A friend bought one from a local salvage yard for $1200. I said $1000 but I actually see many for $1500. '94 and up engines are worth more because they have a non-rotary pump. I think most '93 and older engines are only 160 horse.

only 160 hp but how many ft lbs?

What you would be getting is an intercooled 6BT, a Getrag 5-speed, and an NP205HD.

The 6BT is a great engine, the 94-98.5 12V ISB is slightly better mainly due to the 7100 pump, but the motor you are looking at is definitly a good workhorse with lots of potential for BOMBing if you want more power. Be sure to get the intercooler if you can. If it will fit in whatever you are going to swap this into, you will definitly want to cool the intake charge.

The Getrag tranny is ok I suppose. It doesn't have any major flaws but parts for it cost a ton and it isn't as strong as the 4500 HD trannys that they started using in 94. A lot of Getrag owners are swapping in the 4500HD's. If you plan to BOMB the Cummins, you'll blow out the Getrag above 200hp/600ft-lbs. There is a market for the tranny, many people would rather buy used than pay to have their Getrag rebuilt or swap in a 4500. The 4500HD is a beefed up version of the 4500. It is used only in Dodge rams. The internals a freakin HUGE.

The 205HD is also beefed up for Cummins duty, it is a super strong t-case. If you are going to be reselling this stuff instead of doing a swap I'd be interested in the 205.

For a complete "theft recovery" combo complete with everything (intercooler, radiator, wiring harness, etc) $3000-3500 would be a decent price, at 58K $4000 wouldn't be out of the question. If you can get it for less, jump with both feet.

As for getting a 6BT for $1000-1500, if you can get good engines for that in MI you need to go into business. Buy 'em up and ship them around the country. You'll find plenty of buyers if you can deliver the goods. Sure, you can get a rebuildable with half a million miles on it for that. But a good runner with 100K or less, I don't think so.

ISB is the electronic 24 Valve motors in the '98.5s and newer trucks.

And $1000 would be a great deal for that drivetrain.

and it is no big deal to swap a p7100 into any Bmodel
requires new front cover etc

2001 Cummins H.O., 24 valve (some specs):
Note how heavy the engine and transmission are. I wouldn't be thinking about this for a CJ.

5.9L Cummins, High Output, intercooled, turbo diesel. (it weighs 1022 lbs.!)
245HP@ 2700 rpm
505ft. lbs. torque @1600 rpm.
(the automatic version of the Cummins is not H.O. (@ 235HP, 460 ft. lbs. torque)
[They actually de-tune the engine so as not to over stress the Mopar automatic transmission.]
6 speed NV5600 (5.63/3.38/2.04/1.39.1.00/0.73/5.63R) all synchro (it weighs 360 lbs.)
The NV4500 weighs a measly 195 lbs.
NV241, H.D. t.case, 2.72:1 reduction. 54:1 final drive in low, low.
front 35 spline D60, coil over solid axle, 3.55 gears, no traction device
rear 40 spline D80, (11.3" ring gear) axle, 3.55 gears, no traction device (that sucker is huge!)
At 65mph, in 6th, (w/ stock 32" tires) I'm turning 1900 rpm. With 35's it will be slower
20,000lb. combined GVW and tow capacity. 13,600 lbs. for the trailer.
LT265/75R 16E M/S, Michelin's, 32" tall are stock.
regards, as always, jefe

Oh too late:rolleyes:

There is a guy in Sac here with a 5.9L CJ7.
Had to strech the front clip 6 inches to fit, all new frame rails, I believe an Np435, D300, D30/44. Obviously the drivetrain is not sturdy enough. Last time I saw the thing, the front driveshaft would not fit due to the oil pan, and it was lifted, SOA with lift springs.
It does shit and get though:D
