: Help Choosing a Locker or LSD
MSparks909 05-31-2008, 08:05 PM Hey all. Here's the deal: I have an 05 F150 FX4 with the LSD. I put some 35x12.50's on about 3,000 miles ago, and every time I go offroad, the LSD seems to be getting less and less limited and its startin to behave like an open diff. I live in Eastern NC and there's no hardcore rockcrawling around here, but when I do get stuck, I usually have one back wheel with good traction that could probably get me unstuck if I had a locker or a better LSD. I have the 9.75" diff and I can't find any selectable lockers for it. So I'm stuck between 3 choices: Detroit TruTrac, rebuild my current diff (heard about rebuilding with more clutch packs than stock to make it more "limited") or a Detroit Locker. I was eying the DL but this truck is my DD and it sees about 75% street and 25% dirt. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Detroit is the only answer
MSparks909 05-31-2008, 08:26 PM well... it looks like I'll be going with a detroit:smokin:
how do they handle in turns? how about parking lots? i gotta drive this truck to work everyday...
VBranger 05-31-2008, 09:22 PM I'd stay away from LSD, it has a tendency to fuck with your head.

not to mention the flash backs years down the road.

I drove mine everyday for years and might get one for my CrownVic daily driver
HahnsB2 06-01-2008, 02:08 AM Locker, LSDs are lame as you've found out. They basically lock under throttle, slight positive throttle on corners is best for cornering. You'll know it's there but after a day or 2 driving with it will be natural, it wont be perfect but it's not a caddy either..

Yeah. I would LOVE to blow up a $500 plus locker. :flipoff2:
With that said, a DD on 35's? I would rebuild the LS. I put two more clutch disks in my 10.25 and it feels just like a locker.
Yeah it will eventually wear out, but it sure as fuck didn't cost me $500+ smackers.
You have no chance of blowing a shaft to gernade the detroit, so it's a viable option, but I'm a cheap bastard.
jamming extra clutches makes a LSD like a spool, nothing like a locker.
MSparks909 06-01-2008, 08:38 AM it's not so much the cost (I'd get an electric or ARB selectable if possible)...i just want traction and it needs to be driveable. i've just heard that the DL can be a bit much for the streets, but after reading on this board i think i'll end up going with one.

Until the clutches wear out... then it's like a tight open.
gotta love not knowing when it will switch from locked to open
LSDs you can keep em thanks

Welding it makes it like a spool :flipoff2: It can and will slip still.

It will take some getting used to, but it's not unbearable.
yeah, but it doesnt act like a locker at all, it acts like a spool that slips when the going gets rough.
so you get the worst of both worlds with unpredictable thrown if for good measure.
cperry 06-02-2008, 04:48 AM I recomend the ox locker , open, for perfect driving characterestics, pull a cable to get you out of a jam. small eastcoast american company with a stout product. a bit pricey but so are detroits and if eaton does not start supporting there products than the consumer needs to stop buying there shit. go read the thread about broken detroits, Eaton does not care will not warranty will not sell service parts, youll probably never break it but if you do you might as well throw it in the trash. id run a lockright before i ran a detroit. same effect less money, give us a shout if we can help were local and can recomend some guys closer to you maybe.

Trew. I still wouldn't run a detroit though.
01BlackOffroad 06-02-2008, 10:00 AM Not to hyjack,, but detroits break offen?? i was hopeing that it would handle up to 42-44's in the mud!!!

If you shock load them, yes.
Break a shaft or a u-joint and the detroit goes with it.

not always true
I broke one.
about 6 shafts broken then a warn hub to finally damage the detroit.
a detroit isnt going to break without something else causing it.
as there isnt any other choice out there for locking difs, selectables suck, lunchboxes are junk, detroit is the only game.
I did spend some time at SEMA'05 in the Ox booth and was very impressed with their stuff, if I was gonna run a selectable it would be an Ox.

I didn't think they made an OX for the 9.75"?? I went thru this same dilemma about a year ago and ended up buying the Detroit. The factory Ford LS for the 9.75" sucked ass IMO. It was junk by about 7k miles on my F150. I've had good luck with the Detroit's in my Yota crawler so that's what I went with. I've only put about 5-6k on the truck since install, but so far don't regret it. I've used it off road as well it's not a street queen. The truck only has 33's though. The one annoying thing I've noticed is that with the cruise on when going downhill there is a jerking type motion from the rear. Slight throttle to put pressure on it and it goes away.
MSparks909 06-02-2008, 05:10 PM I didn't think they made an OX for the 9.75"??
NO ONE makes a selectable locker for the 9.75" rear:mad3: if they did i wouldn't be in this dilema. i was thinking about waiting until next year when the 09's come out and swap in a factory selectable locker to my truck...i don't know i'll have to sleep on it
cperry 06-02-2008, 05:44 PM oh ya they don't I read F150 and assumed 8.8 my bad, your pretty much screwed.
MSparks909 06-02-2008, 06:15 PM Ya it blows...the most popular fawking vehicle in the US of A and no one can man up and make a selectable locker! I understand why the aftermarket doesn't make them though...most people that drive F150's nowadays use them as pussy street queens and grocery getters
4x4junkie 06-02-2008, 09:00 PM it's not so much the cost (I'd get an electric or ARB selectable if possible)...i just want traction and it needs to be driveable. i've just heard that the DL can be a bit much for the streets, but after reading on this board i think i'll end up going with one.
Is your truck a stick or auto?
If auto (most are), the Detroit should be much more livable than if you had a manual trans. With the Detroit and stick on my Ranger, it's hard to forget it's back there with each shift due to the clunk from the backlash.
