: Vandals
TheWolf 06-01-2008, 06:45 PM I just got back from running the trail to the first river crossing and back. While I was airing down at the staging area, I noticed 2 trucks there with the windows busted out.:mad3::mad3::mad3: One side window, and one rear slider window.
Looks like the vandals/thieves are back already.:mad3:
norcalsvx 06-01-2008, 06:58 PM we should set up a sting operation and try to catch these punks
Hook up a 802.11 wireless video cam to a solar panel and a good 12v battery. Put it all in a thick Lexan box. Put it on a 20' poll. Then you just need a way to archive the motion capture. I have a bunch of single board computers that can run off flash cards. If it's capturing to JPEG it should be able to store a lot of images, I would think a weeks worth.
Better yet, put an ATT air card in it (I think there is service there isn't there?), and have uploading to a web page. The SBC's have two PCMCIA slots on them. It would be easy to setup. They run on 12vDC, so no converter from the batteries needed.
Fawk Awph 06-01-2008, 08:31 PM well, we must have just left before you came back from the crossng, because we had 2 of the 4 trucks from our group broken into as well. i saw the white for and the dodge side by side with broken windows too. i was the one in the red white and blue SD, my friends purse was stolenout of my truck, and the white SD with the tool boxes had his programmer stolen.
fawking sucks balls. i say just sit up there and catch them at it, beat the piss out of them and then call the sheriff to take them into custody when you are done with them.
Callen
BRENTWADE 06-01-2008, 09:32 PM Just wait till they start emptying all the fuel out of the trucks parked there because of all the high fuel cost. When I go up I park my rig down at the Shinney Boo resort at the end of Eagle lake rd. and give the owner $20 and he will keep an eye on it.
rockyota83 06-01-2008, 09:43 PM the staging area off of eagles lakes rd? i was just parked there friday with probably 1k$ worth of tools and 3 5 gallons cas cans full in my jeep thank god  dirty thieves :shaking:
toy86 06-01-2008, 10:14 PM ya thats gay 4 of my buddies trucks got broken into there this weekende
We only saw 2 trucks broken into at 4:40 PM on Saturday. The Ford and The Dodge.
Totally sucks. There are so many places you could watch from the trees up on the Signal Peak Trail.
But Seriously, if you are Greensticker only, then pay the $20 to park at Shinneyboo.
If not, It's only a mile on the Freeway to Cisco Grove Campground. $5.00 there and your tow rig will be safe.
Maybe we could just put up a sign that states, "this area under surveillence"???
bebe
BRENTWADE 06-02-2008, 12:58 AM I can put up a sign this weekend. What exactly should it say? "Warning!! This area is under surveilence" What ideas do yall have?
joe_and_jeep 06-02-2008, 07:01 AM We have vandal problems too. Don't think the surveilance sign will work. But it is a cheap idea, no harm in trying. Catch one of them, don't hurt them (I know you want to) and call the cops. Hopefully it will set an example. Do it once or twice and word will get out.
joe_and_jeep 06-02-2008, 07:11 AM Was just thinking about it when I walked downstairs to grab breakfast... Need vandal/thief bait??? What piece of shit would turn down stealing two nice red can of gas sitting on a tailgate? They would be gone in less than an hour, and hopefully on tape. Anything that you can put in gas that will fawk up an engine in a hurry???
casper 06-02-2008, 08:08 AM Has anyone reported the breakens? Untill the sherifs department gets alot of reports of the breakens there wont be anymore coverage
TheWolf 06-02-2008, 08:33 AM My Fiance who was with me yesterday is an LEO and noticed certain "gang" graffiti all over the place. If it's the gang type we are dealing with, it will be a bigger problem than we think.
Did anybody talk to the campers who were off the the left just down the road to the trail head? If they were not involved in the break-ins, you would think they would hear windows being broken out of the vehicles.
norcalsvx 06-02-2008, 10:59 AM we should do some nevada county justice catch them beat them down and drop them in a old mine shaft. or one of those cheap fake videos cams. and a sign.
trkklr77 06-02-2008, 11:08 AM cheap disposable guns, you know, the ones you can toss down the cayon or in the lake afterward and not think twice about it...........

It happed to one of the guys I went with last Oct. or whatever the first weekend it was open was. They broke his window out stole his stereo, work gear, shoes, drained his gas tank, stole his hitch pin and his chain binders. And we parked on the road thinking it was going to be safer.:shaking:

popaoneil 06-02-2008, 05:30 PM I own the dodge, and a guy in our group owns the ford. All they took was my registration and insurance papers. but they took a crow bar and pried out my interior back roof light, and pulled apart the two push button lights up by the windshield. Looked like they tried to pry the fords door open with a crow bar before they broke the window. Pulled his lights out to.

1tom2go 06-02-2008, 09:37 PM I was with TheWolf and we got to the staging area at 9:24am Sunday morn. When we turned on the the road into the staging area, I saw a white sedan (like a crown vic) with large chrome rims parked on the paved road just after the entrance. There with no one visible in it. It looked a little out of place there.
When you notice thse things are they reported to the Placer County sheriffs? Should we have reported it when we saw it? I will put the number in my phone and next time I will.
Also we should photograph and report suspicious vehicles.
These are the numbers I got from the sheriff site:
Non-emergency Dispatch
- Auburn area - (530) 886-5375
Non-emergency Dispatch
- Tahoe area - (530) 581-6330
daniel ellison 06-02-2008, 10:33 PM i do believe that that staging area is in nevada county so if some one could come up with the dispatch # for them it would be of great value. then im sure that there has to be a sheriff that loves to wheel and hopefully help us out to catch and prosicute these fawks to the fullest.. im real close to the trail only 20 min away and im interested lets set something up this weekend. i can round up about ten good ol boys and their trucks for bait:mad3:
mchomes 06-02-2008, 10:34 PM Good luck with Nevada County's pear-shaped deputies. Last time I had tools ripped off a job the deputy told me they pretty much wont even try. I asked if he could at least go to some neighbors, but he told me I should do that myself (D. Waldrom). Protect and serve my ass. I have two deputies as neighbors and there is a rental house w/ known dealer/whigger/gangbangers across the street. They said Kieth Royal has decided not to pursue mj crops unless there is an agenda with the perp. Whats more is they HATE when people take things into their own hands. As much as I'd like to throw a ten punch combo at the nose and chin of the thieves, our DA would rather charge me for violence than seriously prosecute the p.o.s. rat addict been to jail 30 times thieves.

Tinman 06-03-2008, 09:55 AM So here's some info on this.
The area is under the jurisdiction of the Nevada County Sheriff's Department. Their Tahoe office non-emergency number is 530-582-7842. If called they will come out to take a report if there is an officer available. I was told they do not have the funds to set up a survailance of the area. The best they can do is to drive in for extra patrols if they get more reports of problems. I asked if pictures of the crime in progress, license plate numbers, etc, would be of any use. I am waiting to talk to a deputy as there was not one available on duty in the office to speak to me when I called.

thats a good idea. something has to be done. this was my group of friends that went up and had all there stuff broken into. definitely not the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd time ive read about this happening out there. it pisses me off so much. :mad3: these guys need blown out knees so everytime they gimp they can remember and pass the word on not to fuck with some else's shit. your plan sounds good. just drive up 3-4 tow rigs with just some trailers and take off. have a few guys posted in the woods with walky talkies and then others down the road. call the police and follow them, whatever need be.

The more reports/documentation=more notice by officials=more patrols.

See above. (if the number of reports increases, the area starts to become known as a high crime area.... Officials don't like that, so that will create some heat on the deputies in that area)
EDIT EDIT:

giterduun 06-21-2008, 05:53 PM Hey there people, the white crown victoria parked at the entrance the day of the vandalism, was mine. I use it to flat tow my samurai up to the trail head. Had I used my truck the same thing probably would have happened to me. The car is unassuming. The plate number is "RKY-BOBY " in case you see it again. Sorry to hear about your trucks and yes what happens in woods, stays in the woods!!!

Keith 07-08-2008, 08:41 PM My gut feeling is that you wont see any patrols by the Sherriff in that area. Where is most of the population of Nevada County? It sure is not up I-80 around the Cisco area. Someone is going to just to park the rig and hide in the hills above and keep an eye out for the theives. Video tape the events and turn them in.
wilco 07-08-2008, 09:18 PM i was with the guys who own the dodge and ford that got broke into. I left the parkig lot on saturday night and was greeted by a sherriff as i was
loading my rig. I think it was about 9 pm. He was nice and said he was keeping a eye out on the parking lot. The trucks were fine when I left. I know those two and I will be parking at cisco next time. The law is making a effort but they cant be there every minute of the day. Funny part is we were planning to park at cisco but we were running late on friday night so we said screw it, i just got lucky.
Keith 07-09-2008, 07:18 PM Thats cool there was a deputy there! But here lies another problem. If there are guys busting into rigs at night, and some headlights come down the road, they are just going to run out in the woods til all is clear. A deputy that even gets out of a car and notices some rigs are broke into, has no idea that there are dudes hiding out in the woods, or that any of the cars that are parked are actually the theives cars.
Bottom line is, someone is going to have to catch them in the act by hiding out themselves...!!@!!!!!!
FuzzyZ_83toy 07-10-2008, 08:25 AM ok so whos got a survalance van to use up there one of these weekends?!

Flatty 09-21-2008, 12:49 PM Sorry to bring this back up. I just read this whole thing, and I am astonished that nothing has been done abut this yet. I know this has been a problem for a few years now. Maybe instead of all this "we should do this" or " we should do that" maybe it is time to actually do something.
The patrols are coming from Truckee, so taht is a treck for them. You are looking at a 30 mile trip each way. Truckee is busy enough, and they are not going to make the trip down to cisco to "check" if everything was OK. You may be on your own here guys. If something does get setup, let me know, and I would eb game to go up there. Leave something on the front seat of your truck, put some stuff in an open bed, and sit and wait.
DIma
gte718p 09-22-2008, 06:41 AM I have a simpler solution that doesn't involve a lynch mob. Someone has to be local. Have a couple of locals sit in the parking lot for a couple of weekends. Put out a box for tips and or beer. You don't need to get into a confrontation with anyone just watch. It will only take a few weekends for the loosers to look for easier targets.
Its not as fun as running the trails. But with a BBQ, a cooler, and a couple of good friends it can be fun and accomplish a lot. I've done this with wheeling trails in SC and hiking trails in WA. It worked both times.

That's a good point, witch I think might have already been covered in this thread. For some that's not really much of an option. The rig is being transported to the trail via trailer, usually that means it's not too close to being street legal. So for those who want to run the trail from the start that poses a problem.
Sillyneck 09-22-2008, 08:45 AM 2 more guys got hit this weekend. I had to go up there last night and tow home one of my buddies. the guy who pulled him out cisco needed a ride to his truck at eagle and he got hit hard in his Dmax. They took his spare keys but not his truck? Made entry through the drivers side ex cab window... then broke the driver's windo for no reason The other truck that was there got all its fuel stolen and broke a window for apparently no reason. f-cking ridiculous.
oh... and there was a bear in the cisco parking lot. that was cool :)
mtnbronco 09-22-2008, 01:05 PM I was running some old dirt roads just south west of there and was surprised at the number of vehicles abandoned and striped. Looks like a dumping ground for the car thefts of the area.

You are right about that, but honestly, I can't think of very many HP's or cops taht would not let you go for driving from one exit to another once you explain the situation. Or you hitch a ride with someone on their way out and get your tow rig at the campground.
I have parked at the staging area before and was freaking out the whole next couple of days about being broken into. From then on, I just parked at teh campground and paid the fees.
I think the tip jar thing would work, but even if someone was there for a few weeks, the vandals would come back eventually. I also agree that vigilante justice is not the right way to go (as good as it sounds). I think there isa better soultion. just don't park there, and the problem will be solved.

Exactly by this point and time, most of the people getting hit know the history. I tow my rig everywhere. I could drive it down the highway, but I haven't. Want to drive the whole trail? Go to Meadow and run it backwards. I've never been vandalized there either. I've heard you can get from Cisco to the start of the trail via gravel roads. It would add some time to the trip, but may be an option for the guys that can't run 1 mile down the highway but want to run the entire trail

Wilson do you know what road this is? The only way to get there that I know of that does not involve the trail or the freeway is to go through signal peak. Is there another way? I heard a rumor once that Cisco campground was going to make a road that went down the side of the freeway down to eagle lakes but I think it’s still a rumor.

I would like to think no, but at the same time that's why I don't risk my rig and park there. If I did, I would be cowering in shame, instead of bitching about it and looking for sympathy here. It's been happening long enough and there are safe places to park. It's unfortunate but right now it's what is happening.
JDunn 09-24-2008, 09:58 AM No, someone "thought" they knew the way my last trip, we got lost as f*** and wound up coming in comittee.
leaving Cisco on your way to Fordyce Lake you come to three intersections. At the first two you go left and the last one just before the top of the hill you go right. At that last intersection if you go left you head up signal peak and can drop down the back side right into the Eagle lake staging area. If you’re in the staging area looking at Fordyce trail the bathroom would be on your left and the trail that goes up the hill to your right goes to signal peak so that’s where you would come down.
ErikB 09-24-2008, 12:13 PM Yes, Signal Peak trail is the next shortest route from Cisco to Eagle Lakes without using the freeway (though its not very short). Might as well run it and add some wheeling time. The 360* views from the peak are great too. :D
popaoneil 08-30-2010, 11:59 AM i have not run fordyce since my truck was broken into in 2008. has this problem dissolved, or are people just not parking at eagle lakes parking lot.

We did this the last time we did fordyce, Money well spent, plus there is a shower behind the store.
popaoneil 09-02-2010, 07:05 PM thanks. thats great they made that trail. i guess just dont get caught on the 1/2 mile of paved road.
Tinman 09-03-2010, 08:00 PM Just remember, if you get broken into while parked at Indian Springs report it. This helps the LEO's track the criminals and also keep in mind this is a problem all along the I-80 corridor not just at I.S.

A friend said that Cisco Grove raised their parking fees to $10. :(
Has there been any problems at the trailhead this year?

Was that for just a truck or truck and trailer ?
MochaMike 09-22-2011, 09:57 PM It was truck & trailer.
I assume it's either, when it $5, it was the same whether I trailered or flat towed.

heard of one local sonoma county group that had a back window popped in. most people i know arent willing to park in a known trouble spot anymore.
Tadlock 09-23-2011, 09:00 AM Last Saturday i paid $20 to leave my truck and trailer there overnight. They told me it is $5 for the truck and $5 for the trailer per day. It seemed a little steep for me, but the added sense of security is a bonus.
jamespadgett 09-23-2011, 02:28 PM We should put up a game cam to try and catch these thieves.
JDunn 09-23-2011, 02:39 PM The last two trips I paid $10 per day for the tow rig and trailer. Earlier this summer I was paying $5 per day. When she told me it was $10 I asked her about it. She said it has always been that way and I must not have been up there in a long time. I quickly told her it has not. If they raised their rates fine. I will pay for the security. My club is an adopt-a-trail club and I'm up there all the time.
daniel ellison 09-24-2011, 12:01 AM they did the same thing last year, they raised it to $10 a day then dropped it back down. I think it goes up and down with the price of milk!!
