Has anyone transplanted and Isuzu diesel or??? into a nice tight little rockcrawler? Are there any Sammi sized rigs running diesel? I need to eventualy switch from my Jeep to a smaller vehicle cause of towing issues and would like it to be diesel cause the tow rig is also. Their are other reasons as well. (cheaper fuel.. long story)

one of the ECBR guys is putting a cummins B-4 in his EB...
i was thinking it came outta a retired ups truck.. only 100+hp but it has like 300#' of torque at 1500 rpms and gets about 30 mpg... last update i heard was he had it under the hood, but not on the trail yet...
do a search i know theres some info here on it.. i think its an awesome idea for a rockcrawler i play in the mud too much to be able to do it myself...

Yeah.. I know they exist in larger rigs. EB is large compared to what I started this post about (Sami sized rig)

VW diesel is a popular swap into a Sammi. I have seen a CJ7 with a perkins in it before also.

In general, I don't think the diesels work out real well in a rock crawler (specifically the 4BT Cummins). I love the Cummins in my tow rig, but they just don't rev up fast enough and they have too narrow of a powerband.

However, I think using a car diesel (as opposed to a truck diesel) in a small rig (ie the VW/Sammi swap) could work out pretty well, as the smaller car deisels drive much more like gas motors than the bigger ones.

now I am still in search of my own but Ford made a 4 cyl diesel ranger back in the 80's and i figure you could put a 4 cyl mustang turbo on that 4 cyl and get close to 200 hp and 300 ft lbs.

Just a guess.... that's my next project

My Bro..... ( AIRZUKI) is running a Toyota 'L' diesel in his rig... with a turbo conversion........ and it's no slouch in the rockcrawling dept.... and the last time it was still street legal enough to drive from Vancouver B.C. to Moab we got approx. 40 MPG with 35" BFG muds on it :) :)

the only real problem is that on a trail run.... it's always barbeques to the back!!

Yeah, I remember constantly being tail gunner when I still had the old 6.2. Now I just make it a point to get in front of the carbs and ProJection rigs. :D

I wouldn't exactly call a 4BT a "little diesel". :D

Being from a country where 99% of the 4x4's are Diesel I migt chime in here.
The Isuzu Diesels are prone to die an early death. The Mercedes are mostly dogs when it comes to weight/power ratio. I dunno if you guys get the Peugeot diesels in the US or not, but here in Europe you can buy new Sammys equipped with the 1.9TD Peugeot and they work like a star. Another option is the 1.9TDI VW offers in their cars. They come in 90, 110, 115 and 130 HP ratings stock. The newer 115 and 130 HP ones are the more desireable with a lot more torque than the 90 and 110 HP ones, but with all TDI's you're talking electronic engine management :flipoff2:
Nissan offers some pretty good Diesels in 2.5, 2.7 and 3.0 Ltr. displacement, check fork lift dealers for avail. in the US.
If you want to import an engine from europe, gimme a holla and I can set something up for you guys.

There is a guy locally that has put an ISUZU I mark diesel and transmission in a samurai and it works pretty well.

How about a Volvo engine (http://www.geocities.com/xj88driver/halfbreedrebuild.htm) ?

The 6cyl. Volvo and the 5cyl. Volvos are Volkswagen engines. Volvo bought them back then to offer a Diesel in their cars. I have the exact same 6cyl. in my VW Van (LT28), very reliable but no real power at all.

See if you can find a Toyota 1KZTE 4cyl turbo diesel. I would start in either australia or canada!
