I was looking at one of my street rodder mags to day and they are talking about a twin cam quad 4 engine that has been aroung for awhile and weighs in under 300lbs and put out up to 180hp (90 berette GTZ. Is any one running this engine, or thought about it. Yes I did the search and it came up with squat!!
I may not have used the right words but what ever. If some one is running one how do you like it, how is the efi to get running!

I think Oldsmobile actually were the first to run the quad, deadly lil motor though, definitely lots power but i dont know exactly how much it weighs in comparison to a zook motor. Thats the bitch about it all, we all want more power but keeping in the same weight range as the 1.3 or 1,6 is another story.

Well what does the 1.3 and 1.6 weigh? The article states that the quad4 weighs under 300lbs! This all sounds like a good perspective choice along with the 1.3 &1.6's. Does any one know about the efi system and how hard it is to wire up?

The 2.4L Toy 22RE weighs 450-500 pounds complete, and puts out 116hp and 140 lb-ft of torque at 2400 RPM.

So that motor is 200 pounds lighter and has 60 more HP than a toy.

my 1.6 felt like it was around 160 pounds complete.

Well if i can carry my 1.3 into the basement myself, it's i'd have to say that it's way less than 300lbs, and i mean less than half of a quad-4

So if we are talking half the weight what is your hp and torque half as well. I think that adding 150 +- lbs is worth the gain in hp and torque. If 150lbs is going to affect you performance I assume you do not let passengers in the rig! This is just a nother route I am concidering before spending the time and money on a second rig. Keep the input comming.

Quad 4 -- is/was a ~ok small high rpm motor with little sucess. BUT has a good factory backing in the racing/ road course area...

http://www.mantapart.com/q4rwd.html

has a rwd converison bellhousing that mates it to a list of trannys

and there is a boat load of usfull parts/info on that site for somone considering this swap...

a ~ok FAQ area
http://www.angelfire.com/il2/insig2/quad4r.html

--> BUT id ask are you really looking for a high rpm DOHC engine?

some interesting facts off one particular site...
"
The rate of head gasket failure from 1987 to 1993 was 11%. Anything about 4% is considered excessive.
The rate of coil pack failure, for the same time period, is approximately 40%.
Oil pressure sender failure: 15%
Check valve failure: 7%
"

They are/were good fiero conversion motors...

BTW... anyone hear of google before? I used "olds quad 4" and found severl hours worth of reading.... I just wanted to get the ball rolling on this one... :flipoff2:

Why do we need this type of horsepower for rock crawling ? Everything i read here is "sumo this, 5.29 that, reduction reduction reduction ! Most bulldozers have next to no horsepower but they make thier way up stuff that would make your skin crawl. I live in the land of "MUD" where it would be very nice to have some horsepower (hence the sig). I love zook motors, so light , so reliable, so small, why dont you just save your money and drop a 1.6 in it ? Conversions are alot of headaches, especially with a quad-4 and especially if u dont really need it. This is just one of my many opinions.

I agree with Titanium, If you want a crawler you don't need a mega horsepower motor, you need gears. If you want a mud runner stuff a 1.6L 16v in there or buy a Jeep and go with a 350 LT1 with a blower....why did we buy Zuks in the first place??? Light, reliable, cheap transportation was my reason.

I dont believe the quad 4 is cheap as far as parts go, neither are zook parts but at least we get the reliability.

The '99 and up Chevy Tracker/Vitara 2.0 motor has 140 h.p..
It's a little less than the Quad4, but it's still Suzuki and the weight can't be a lot more than a 1.6. That's what I had in my last Sammy (it's for sale, by the way) and it worked great.
