Did you take 5/16" off the the ring or 5/8" (diameter)...

I took about 3/4" total off my 60 ring gear diameter.

We took a piece of 3/8 x 2 and ground a 45 degree angle at the bottom of it and then welded it at about a 45 degree angle along the bottom of the cover so that the ground down area touched the bottom plate that we welded to the bottom of the housing. (we let the bottom plate hang over about 3/4 inch)
We then applied a more than generous amount of silicone be fore and after the cover was installed.
We took a total of 5/8 off the ring gear.

Right Awn!!
Im in the process of swapping a 14 bolt.
I was planning on grinding a bunch off the bottom, but I never considered that modification.
What type of rod, and techniques did you use to weld the plate steel to the cast iron? Very cool.
Thanks for the info.

Me like. What did you end up with for total clearance? (ie ctr line to bottom, and the stock measurement, if you know it.)

For welding we used a Mig with high quality wire in it. You want lots of nickle content.

Total height from center of tube to bottom of housing is about 5.5" Don't know the stock measurment but i think we lost about 2".

I can't take any pics right now because the camera is out of town but if ya'll are still interested then i'll post some when it gets back.

Thanks for the comments.

Matt, how much would you charge to do that if someone were to bring an axle in? Maybe going 14 bolt this summer and San Angelo isn't a bad drive.

Lake Rat -
That is knarly.
Have you done any test runs with it yet?
Have you done this on a 14 bolt before?

Do you have any strength concerns w/the turned down ring gear? I'm assuming this is going in your Blazer? Also, if you have a pic of the gear after being turned, would like to see it.

With a 10.5" ring gear - I doubt it <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

Unfortunately I think not.

As consolation you could view my buddy Chad's 14 bolt shave article
