Any one back from the weekend rubicon trip?

I want to hear how it went.

It's a Damn good thing I didn't go this weekend.

I discovered today that both my motor mounts are broke. It must have happened last time I was up on the Rubicon.

Well,

We all kinda never met up this weekend...Mike Elrod and his gang made it to Buck on Friday. I got to Loon around 6:00ish and Mark's group was just dropping into the Granite Bowl. We caught up to them at Ellis Creek. We all camped here Friday (Except for Rockslut-who headed to Spider). Sat, got up..had my morning coffee...talked to Steve and Bob for a while and then took off to catch up with Matt.

Matt and & cruised to Buck.,..headed back and found everyone at Spider. Hung out for a while and then we headed back to Loon to camp last night. That's the last that I saw them.

Damage that I knew of so far:
1 stock tierod (Steve)
Front d-line u-joint popping out..had to be welded in(Josh)
All three spare fuel filters clogged due to batch of crap in gastank...multiple stops due to clogged fuel lines...(Me)

We got to Buck friday afternoon. We waited at Little Sluice till 2:00 and then headed to Buck by way of Old Sluice and swam and fished friday evening. Saturday started out with some fishing and a swim to Buck island and back, the kids tubed over. We packed up and headed to the Springs at noon and got there at 2:30 and set up camp, ate lunch and went for a dip in the springs. Had dinner at about 8:00 and afterward my daughter (age 6) made smores for all of us. This morning we left the springs at 9 and we got to Tahoe at 12:30, ate lunch and headed home. I tore one sidewall, Goerge sheard 4 hub bolts, I drilled and extracted the broken ones and we had Goerge fixed sunday evening in camp. I also ran the whole trail with a blown powersteering pump(arm strong steering). Had a great trip, even though we didn't meet up with everybody as planed. The next three day run will be the weekend of Septemer 13, 14 and 15. Everybody mark your calenders and plan on going, California, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Colorado and everybody else.

hmmm where *exactly* is the con????

how far from WA (lets say the WA/Oregon Border, I-5 area (or through Yakima if that the more logical route to go).....

never been there, don't think I'll make it this year, but as soon as the new tow rig gets done, and some more work on the Scout....................

hmm, how far is the Con from the new RMIHR site... :D :D

Hey RUSTO....

Will that Travellette haul a trailer and a Scout behind the trailer!!!

That would be the only way I think that my rig would make it to the CON.

Then I would actually have to "DRIVE"...ohhh no, my Scout.

Surely disaster.

COOOOMMMON with the pic's BITCHES...Web Wheeler is HORNY for some FUCKING input!!!

Gooooood Morning!

While Mike Elrod's story sounds more like what we had planned, here is my story...

We came in to loon and aired down and I installed my modified driveline. My front d-line broke after less than 20'. The yoke on my new front end doesn't have the retainers and I didn't know an adapter u-joint was available. Regardless the caps kept walking out every 5 ft. On top of that the angle was so steep that I lost slip length so Joe and I had to swap d-lines which turned out to be a good thing for both of us. After a valiant effort welding my caps with two batteries and jumper cables, a group with a mobi-welder stopped by and help out.

Just before the top of the entrance to the Granite bowl, Steve's tie-rod bent nicely. Straightened it with a dead log and the winch to get him to the top of the hill, where we swapped in a spare.

By the time we made it to Ellis it was getting dark. We set up camp and had a nice evening with Rockslut and Scout Dude's Crew.

Packed up the next morning and went into Spider to set up camp. By the time we got there, Amanda had broken out in spots and her throat was killing her. Seems she came down with Strep or something. That was a good night though and Amanda was a great sport. We all sang the b-day song and had some delicious confetti party cake!

We though we'd save what was left for breakfast but our camp welcoming committee wanted it for dessert. It went something like this... All sleeping. (Josh)Joe, is that you? Joe!? (Mark)That's not you guy's!? Mad scramble out of tents to chase bears down the hill. They got some doughnuts, fruit cups, and of course the cake! We spent the next hour tying up our trash and food. I still somehow managed to fall right asleep.

We decided to go back out via Loon the next morning. Amanda really wasn't feeling well so Joe drove her rig while Jill (Joe's wife) drove their rig. Jill really did well. We all decided that even though it was her first time wheelin, she drove and chose lines way better than Joe!

So we are about a half mile from spider and Jill and Joe decide to break at the same time. Joe bent the DF break line on Amanda's rig and pinched it. No breaks.
Jill tore the shite out of the rear driveline and blew a hose. I think it scared the hell out of her. Steam blowing everywhere and a mad clanking noise as she proceded to drive a few more feet. 55Guy hooked Joe up with a u-bolt and we had the rigs patched up in a couple of hours. We had a great lunch. It's amazing how good the little things in life are when you are in a tough spot. Some bread, cheese, salami and the last couple of community beers under the hot sun.

After another half mile or so, my steering box began to rip from the frame. Ripping the frame itself. Seems my old steering linkage had much more give than my new 1 Ton stuff from BNT. Needless to say we took Wentworth out and called it a day. We actually all had a blast back there. It was beautiful.

Thanks to the guy who helped me with the welder, 55Guy, Langfords, Duarte's, and the cutest family of all... Old Scout, BajaBinder, and Joie!

Sounds like you had a great weekend...

I am looking forward to when I can break things on the trail ENVY - ENVY and not in my garage!

I think that next spring...assuming that there are no closures I am going to be going down that way. I would probably pull a trailer behind the Scout though with the swampers in it...

That way I could hear myself singing!

Yeah- We had a great trip! That's right- a Great Trip! We had more carnage than I have ever experienced in one trip and nobody got upset and pissed. We just all pitched in and went to work. Good times, good times.

Carnage count:
1 drag link- Steve (Baja Scout)
1 front d-shaft- Josh (JoshC)
1 rear d-shaft- Jill (Mrs. jdjanda)
1 severed brake line- Amanda (Rockgoddess) Joe driving
1 blown heater hose- Amanda
1 torn frame/stearing box- Josh (JoshC)

A few additional thoughts- this was the slowest weekend I've ever seen at Spider. It was quiet by 10:00pm. The bears were even suprised and decided to liven up the party.

My thanks to Bob (Old Scout) for driving Amanda's Scout in to Spider and to Joe (jdjanda) for driving it out. You guy's are great!

I CAN'T WAIT TO DO IT AGAIN!

My Weekend account of information: (really long!)

First little snafu..My Scout cannot handle freeway speeds. The rpm's are too much for the cooling system that I have. So, I had to take the back roads to get there. This little problem would also dictate how my weekend would go due to the fact that I couldn't go all the way through because there are no back roads to get from Tahoe to home (OK, there are, but that would really suck!) So, I knew right off of the bat that I would have to go in and leave from Loon. Anyways, figured that I'd make the best of it. Got to Loon sometime between 5:00 & 6:30 (Didn't check the time). Aired down and started towards the Gatekeeper. Locked front pass hub but it would lock on the inside. Tried everything that I could to get it to lock before I got the the GK but it never did lock. So, with my 3 wheel drive, I proceeded to hang up on my 14 bolt rear and completely embarrass myself. Finally made it through and pulled over. Removed outer Hub part and then stuck a screwdriver inside that the locking ring finally popped into lock (Fawken thing!). Proceeded on to the alligator pit. That is where my driver's rear tires is stuffed so far into the wheel well that, it's even hitting on the front side. Anyways, we keep going and about 100 yds down, we here a vehicle coming up from behind..it's Matt (Rockslut). So, we stop, BS, have a beer and then proceed to Ellis to meet up with Bay Area Group. My roommate and I camp there and Matt & his co-pilot (Neil) head off to Spider.

Side note: It was really cool to meet everyone & put names and Faces together. OS, next beer is on me...Maybe if your up here sometime, we can grab a beer and discuss the Rover motor idea some more (Like, where to find one)

Anyway, next morning, we get up, have coffee (But no breakfast rolls because my exceptionally smart roommate decided to put them into the water-filled cooler...damn you Damon! :D), pack up and BS with Steve and Bob for a bit. The rest of the camp is dead I think. We then hit the trail to meet up with Matt at Spider. Joe wakes up when I fire the huge horsepower 305 up  and we tell him to meet us at Spider later.
On the way to Spider, things are working well, except for a rather steep incline that I try and probably lost a gallon of gas out of the tank. So, as I near the Soupbowl, Damon asks if I am going to try it. I told him that I was concerned about losing too much fuel and that I'd nose up it to see what happened. Well, I started up, it kept going, I got to the part where you need to turn pass, and it kept going...things were going well, then my 14 bolt hung up right at the very last part before the pass rear tires climbs. I tried to turn the front back and forth to no avail. Finally, I backed up about a foot and Damon threw one rock in front of the rear pass tire and I then climbed right up it. If I had cut and plated the 14bolt or had the 38's that I had planned to have by now, I would have walked right up it.

Finally caught up with Matt at Spider. Watched the sluice for a bit, went to Spider to get cleaned up and then called Joe on the CB to see where they were. They were coming up Walker's and it was starting to get hot. So, we let them know that we were heading to Buck and to meet us there. On the way to Buck, we took the slabs due to a group of Jeeps that went down the old sluice (We didn't want to get caught behind them). There was one particular section of the slabs that is a stair step that you have to make a 3 point turn to nose down it. Well, My steering really sucked (It was almost like I had no PS at all) and I ended up down at the bottom of the ledge with the rear dif backed up to a rock and the front driver's tire wedged up to another rock. I couldn't go forward or backwards...so, I kicked the rear drive out of the Atlas and hit reverse and turned hard driver's with only the front tires. (I have seen amazing tricks done at the CALROCS comps..I try to remember their ideas!)..anyway, it worked like a charm. I actually pivoted around and was then free to go forward. Later, I discovered that I had put about a 3/4" dent into the rear 14bolt cover though:eek:..anyway, made it to buck. Went swimming for about an hour and then headed back to Spider. Ran out of gas on the slabs. Put in the dreaded jerry can full of fuel. We used clear line to siphon it in and the fuel looked fine. I soon found out that there was what appeared to be about 6 lbs of mud in that tank. The trip back was halted about every 15-20 minutes while I cleaned out or replaced my fuel filters. I had three spares and used them all. Made it to Spider, and hung out there for a while and then Matt said that he was going to head to Loon to meet our buddy , Josh, who was coming in that night. I was thinking about staying at Spider, but my roommate wanted to head out. So, we took off with Matt. Made it to Loon, ate dinner, bs'd for a bit, then crashed. Woke up yesterday, aired up and headed out. About 10 maybe 15 mile from Georgetown, my fuel filter clogged again. I pulled off into a ditch and cleaned it out. We took off down the road again and it died right in the middle of the road on a bend with no where to go quickly. Damon jumped out to make sure that no cars were coming from behind while Matt & Josh blocked the other lane while I coasted backwards across the road and down probably 150 yards to a flat spot. It seems that the fuel line was clogged now. I cleared the line and bypassed the mech fuel splitter just in case it was clogged too. After that, it ran fine...made it home with no other trouble.

More side notes:

Scoutilliac: That carb trick is/was awesome. I think I will keep the Edelbrock...it would run at all sorts of angles! Thank you very much for sharing that info!

things that need to change: Fuel cell instead of the two tanks!. Since I cut out the Radiator core support, can now fit a bigger radiator in there. So, out with the smaller copper one and in with a larger aluminum one. Apparently, I have been too kind with the sawzall and I need to get medieval on my fenders!

That's about it...Mike E and co..sorry we never caught up with you. Maybe we can try this again in a couple months..How's Oct for everyone?

- Joel

The rear diff on Amanda's Scout was leaking badly so I decided to check it out. Damn, the welded D44 is totally fragged  Pieces everywhere!

Time to step up to a D60 or 14 bolt!

More to follow, I'm sure :(

Sounds like you guys hah a lot of fun. I tried to make it but after last weeks break of my 60 I could not fix it in time. I was going to put an eaton in it but come to find out I had the wrong gears in it. So I decied to put a 14 bolt back in it. I didn't get the gears until today. I'll be there next trip.

Well you all told a pretty good story. Don't have much to add.
Abba, Curtis sorry to hear you could not make it, Mike and group sorry we never meet up.

The weekend kicked butt once we got going. The new 4:1 kicks some ass. The Scout is now point and shoot. I need to work out a few problems with the cooling. Next on the list are 4.56's, spooled rear and a Detroit up front.

I think my wife is hooked, she felt bad about the d-line but she is hooked. I may be building a second rig so she can drive the Scout in and I can drive the other rig :D

I had a blast BSing with the Dysfunctional crew, got Pepsi :flipoff2:

I feel bad enough i couldent go. I really wanted to and was gong to tell 4 Wheel Parts offered me a job. I asked to start Today so i could still go but it was Start friday of dont have a job type $hit. They had a huge BBQ and sale going on this past Sat. and needed me there. :( I would have much rather been up there. I have worked 10 hour days from last monday to now (including sunday seeing they are open then) and my next day off looks to be Sat. I Need to get the Fawk out of town.

Sounds like you guys had, um, fun. The breakage sucks, but atleast you guys were up there. I finished my links and doubler install. I just have small cleanup and finishing touches on it all. Then on Sunday I go up to the con to meet up with some of the Jambo cook crew guys. I go in through Loon on Sunday and come out Loon on Tusday. That means all the way to the Springs and back. The scary part is my wife and I will be alone the first time through so I gotta be sure to carry anything that may break for sure. It should be fine though and fun.

Joel, funny how you have the same type of over heating problem I have. Works fine on the trail, but it gets really hot at speed down the freeway (220-240). I've even tried installing a second radiator so I run two 3 core radiators at once, but I still run hot. The only thing I can figure is my little v6 has a hard time throwing the Scout at speed especially since I specifically built the v6 to be a low end torquer. I'm going to try installing a fan shroud cause everyone says it will help lower the temps 10-20 degrees. We'll see, but I doubt it. So, it's trailer time for my Scout until I can get the 350 I bought from Abba put together and stuffed into the pig.

Anyway, sounds like you guys had fun.
