: custom 10 bolt q's
Thissideup 06-09-2008, 07:12 AM Hello all, just have a couple q's about ten bolts. I'm thinking of building up a set for my tj, I know I can use waggy d 44's or modify 44's from something else, but i'd like to try something a little different. what I'm thinking is taking the tubes from a front 10 bolt and pressing them in a rear housing ( to get rid of the spring perch) while narrowing at the same time. then in the rear I will cut the ends of the tubes off and make a flange to allow front spindles to bolt up making a full floater. now where this gets a little difficult is i'm not quite sure where to get custom shafts made. I phoned ORD and yukon axle and gear but no luck. has anyone got any good sources and prehaps hickups that might be encountered? by the way 10 bolt is as big as I need as this jeep will never see bigger than 35'' rubber.

wingnut3k 06-09-2008, 09:52 AM in all seriousness build waggys, that seems like way more trouble than its worth...you would have to get custom made shafts...waggy 44s are already jeep width and it would be 10 times easier, and save you a lot of time and money
aaronr10 06-09-2008, 09:54 AM The $$ you would spend on building at axle (pretty cool idea) but may want to consider D60's and shave the housing for clearance as good or better that a 10 bolt. Plus more gear ratio options available for D60's. I understand that I didn't answer your question. You can find axle companies that will cut and spline an axle but I don't know if it would be cost effective to have a full float 10 bolt shaft made. Plus if one gets snapped (yes, 35's can easily break a 10 bolt shaft) you S.O.L. for replacment, unless you have a "batch" made at that time. Waaaay to expensive for a 10 bolt.

I did that once...
However, it was a 10 bolt front. Still yet, :homer:
Live and learn, live and learn. :D
GMCTruxrule 06-09-2008, 12:02 PM This is a dumb thread.
10 bolts were designed to get 1/2 ton pickups from point A to point B and back again.
The upside is, since its a turd, the chrome won't rust, the downside, its still a turd.
Lastly, there are many other options that are way better in the grand scheme of bad ideas, than the one your thinking of.
5 lug full float dana 60s come to mind. Or maybe a Currie high 9.
Anyway, rant off.
Donahue 06-09-2008, 07:22 PM dont forget my pressing the front tubes into a rear housing you will be getting rid of the inner seal, and you would need to account for that somehow. i'm not saying this isnt a dumb idea, but there is a lot more to it than you think.

would be far better than the three grand I threw into my dana 35, I'm not looking for a shaved d 60, I know there are far better and far easier ways to run 35 under a tj, but that would be little fun for me. I'm looking for a project, something to make me think a little. That's what this tread is about, it is mostly agreed that a 30 spline 10 bolt is of equivalent strength to a d44, and 10 bolts are 100 to 1 in the junk yards so why not entertain doing something a little different than everyone else. everything else is available to do this just need to find out where to get the shafts.

now this is the kind of feedback I'm looking for.
jesster 06-09-2008, 09:36 PM I like 10 bolts for what they are, but do not do what you are thinking about. It will be a waste of time and money.
As you have probably already found out, the 10b splines are cut at a different pressure angle than standard Dana stuff and it will be a major PIA to find someone who will be able to cut them. I even had difficulty getting stock length 4340 inner shafts when I had a 10 bolt front...
Once you start modifying 1/2 ton stuff, you will have as much money in them as a set of stock 1 tons...
Its really just better to go with Waggy 44's than customs 10 bolts, that way you can buy stock shafts and no custom crap. If you want custom, shave the bottom of the D44's for some added clearance.
My .02
dahoyle 06-09-2008, 10:19 PM would be far better than the three grand I threw into my dana 35,
So 2 stupid ideas is better than one? Get a clue. If you want to run 1/2 ton stuff, run a Dana. The idea that 10 bolts are 100 times more common than Dana 44's is just pure ignorance talking. Every manufacturer out there offered Dana 44's at one time or another, yet only GM offered 10 bolts. Same for aftermarket. This trouble you are having with axleshafts would be gone in about 5 minutes, if you told the suppliers that you wanted 30 spline Dana axles.
It is beyond me why some people think that doing something different is somehow better than going with the tried and true. Granted, that's where all the advancements in the sport came from, but not because it was something different. It was something better. I don't think you are going to get anyone to jump onto the 10 Bolt bandwagon, and in truth, you would just be throwing your money away. It's your money, so do what you want, but just realize that it is one completely stupid, fucked up concept.
wish you luck, and hope you enjoy your POS 10 Bolts, till they break. Then you will quite likely be jumping on the Dana bandwagon, with your wallet a few grand lighter.
