Does anybody know if the early TPI setups require input from the speedo to operate? Or if I were to run a burned prom in it could it be removed? I am going to be running a small block possibly with an early Tuned port set up, and I am going to be purchasing a 3 speed Stak. They offer a 3 pulse and a 40 pulse option, so I am hoping to buy it with the proper setup for that computer. Anybody help me out?
I thought those were 4 pulse. You might try:

You dont need the VSS for TPI to function.
However you need the VSS for TPI to function correctly. The ECM has many different fuel and timing maps which are ALL based on engine and vehicle speed. If you dont use a VSS the ECM effectively goes into limp mode and relies on only one fuel and timing map.
Also the VSS controls idle speed while the vehicle is moving. So with no VSS the vehicle will stall every time you come to a stop. The VSS kicks the idle up 50 to 100 rpms while slowing down to prevent stalling.
I have run TPI in several different vehicles and from past experience I recommend running the VSS. Performance is noticably better with it.
