: 5.13s/stock transfer case...ok for 31s?
Joe_W 07-22-2002, 10:41 AM My spoa is on hold waiting for funds for gears. I just saw in the sale section an ad for 2 built axles with 5.13 gears, lockers etc. The price seems pretty reasonable and hopefully flexible :)
I'm wondering if the stock transfer case and 5.13 gears will work out, opinions???
Bill4rest 07-22-2002, 11:04 AM 5.13's would be a tad steep IMOP. But if you shoot straight up to 33's you’d be golden. But depending on price I would think twice about 5.13's because they’re not OEM gears. I have had bad experiences with friends running both Yukon and Richmond sets. A couple of them have lead feet, but the other drive slow and easy. Then again there are people running them no problem. So take it as you will. I will not buy anything but OEM
Rudezuk 07-22-2002, 11:17 AM Yeah i agree with Bill....I went through a few sets of 5.43's, the ring and pinion is way too small!!!
Id say save your money on the gears and get a 6:1 case....Keep the 3.73's in there!
3.65*6.187*3.73= that will put you at 84:1
Fatty competed with that with 33's!!!
Joe_W 07-22-2002, 11:25 AM Are 5.13s OEM for Sidekick by any chance?
Heres some details:
The front is a stock housing with a sidekick center,5:13's,and a lockrite. Its also set up for spring over.
The rear is a Sidekick/Samurai Hybrid. it has a sidekick center section with 5:13's and a lockrite, and samurai outertubes and ends. It is set up for spoa and has a trac bar mount and a heavy gusset on the long side
He's asking $500, I'm hoping I could get it for a little lower and he's in Texas so I save on shipping. Keep the opinions coming guys!!
Shawn_C 07-22-2002, 11:54 AM They oem suzuki, I thought they were 5.12's that came out of the trackers/kicks so I would wager they are oem. And that'd be real low gearing until you get 33's which would bring everything back down to stock levels.
Joe_W 07-22-2002, 12:02 PM well real low is good for off-road, might be annoying for on-road I suppose. Have to think this some more
DemoMike 07-22-2002, 12:13 PM 31's: (25.5/30.5)x(5.13/3.73)=1.149
33's (25.5/33)x(5.13/3.73)=1.063
You'll be roughly 15% under geared from stock with 31's.
(25.5/25.5)x(4.1/3.73)=1.099:D
Tusker 07-22-2002, 12:27 PM With the 5.13's and 31's you would be almost equivalent to stock tire size with 4.10's. A little lower, but not much different than stock as far as gearing goes. Your crawl ratio would be 42:1. Not low enough for anything serious. Throw some t-case gears with that though and now you are talking. I have the OEM 5.13's from a sidekick, and I am happy with them. I don't have any personal knowledge, but I would respect the words of caution about after market gears mentioned above though.
If you want to get a low crawl ration with suzuki axles, I would look seriously at a set of quality R&P gears (like the hybrid Suzi/Sidekick 5.13's). A GRSIII with 3.73's will put one serious strain on your t-case. Been there done that. It is better to spread out the gearing between the t-case and the R&P's if you can. With a GRSII and 3.73's, I bent my t-case arms so bad I was disabled on the trail, I reinforced them and then ripped out the rubber t-case mounts on another trip (disabled again). Then I put in the Spidertrax poly mounts and now have seriously distorted, egg-shaped holes in the tabs where the t-case mounts to the frame from the bolts trying to tear through the body mounts and almost succeeding  ). My troubles stopped when I went to the 5.13's.

Ask the guy what they came out of. Because to my knowlegde the sidkicks where 5.12.......could be a typo.
jones 07-22-2002, 02:40 PM I know a guy running 5.13's with a stock t-case and 31's. He drives on the highway still but is turning about 4500 RPM at 110 km/h, which is about as fast as he can go.

ok bill, let me set ya stright........:D
the sidekicks/trackers came with 5.12's right, but also they're 5.13's......... how?????
the kick/tracker gears are actuall 5.125:1, so if you want to round it up to 5.13 cause its half way then you say 5.13, some will just say 5.12, either way its still the same, your still off by .005 no matter which ratio you call it, i personally call it 5.13...... but thats just me......
:flipoff2:
Bill4rest 07-22-2002, 05:45 PM AHhH I see. cool. well I figured if they were one in the same who care it would only be off by .01:)
BTW this slowness stinks!:P

Holy Crap, did Mud Magnet actually have something to say that was sorta Tech related and not a flame attempt on a newbie?!?!:flipoff2:
I'm in shock:flipoff2:
Shrock 07-23-2002, 12:09 AM Seems like a pretty good deal to me. Axles should hold up OK too.
Too low????? No way.
misatori 07-23-2002, 06:20 AM Houston Axles? Brian Alley made his own hybrid rear & I know it is for sale. Is this the one? I know he ran Pro Comp 35s w/ no problem.
Did he run t-case gears plus the 5.13's.

Actually you are wrong Mike. They are actually 5.12 gears.
Many scientists prefer to round 5 to the nearest even number. As a result, about half of the time 5 will be rounded up, and about half of the time it will be rounded down.
In this way, 25 rounded to the nearest even number would be 20—it would be rounded down.
And, 75 rounded to the nearest even number would be 80—it would be rounded up.
Now that your math lesson is over, lets get back to some tech stuff.:flipoff2:
mud-magnet 07-23-2002, 10:57 AM  either way, cause its only .005 anyways......... :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
MuddMachine 07-23-2002, 04:10 PM I'm callin them 5.13's and thats that !:flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

Roksamy 07-28-2002, 03:15 PM Suzuki recognises the oem sidekick gears as 5.12's in all of thier tech info. Listen to junkyard experience!

HUH?
Is 30 not just as close to 25 as 20?
And 70 is just as close to 75 as 80 is?
