I have an s10 with the factory 7.5" 10 bolt axle and I don't really wanna spend the on a locker. I do drive the truck a quite a bit on the roads but it will soon just become an offroad vehicle but will be driven on roads to mud spots and what not. So does anyone think that welding my diff. will just suck to drive it around on road?
Thanks!

that tiny rearend will eat wheel bearings if you run it on the pavement a lot. Its the same one they put in a lot of cars, I had two I welded up in cars with small tires on them, wheel bearings got ate up pretty quickly from turning on dry pavement.

im goin to weld my rear end eventually... i mean as far as 12 bolts in gm A body cars i had mine welded for 2 years until it finally broke then i put in a mini spool. Still rockin on fine.

It's realy not any worse than a detroit or other auto locker. I weld the rear of all of my wheeling rigs now (I have had arb's and detroits). But no mater what that rear is eventualy going to go.

I've done the fozzy locker mod several times with good results.
The key to not breaking is simply not to shock load the system.
Don't let the tires/axle bounce. Don't hold your foot in it when the tire comes off the ground.
An automatic is also easier on axles then a guy side stepping a clutch pedal.

i have been driving mine for a while now and its held up fine i was really scared it was going to break on the street but it hasnt i run about 40 psi to keep the contact patch to a minimium. if you dont have to drive it i mean if it isnt your only driver and you dont plan on keeping it that way forever i would weld it up for some temporary fun! i got some pretty grippy tires 33x12.5 trxxs mt's kinda slide and squirms through corners. turn wide and fast!!!:)

i have noticed tire wear in the month or so i have had mine locked up and i just drive mine to the trails thats it. i wouldnt spend the money on a locker either though for that pos rearend. if you want to drive it on the street i would put a rearend in it that is worth buying a locker for. like a ford 8.8.

If you weld the rear your tire wear will be even more accelerated than with a locker because of the obvious, your tires will BOTH always be turning. So when you turn, your inside tire will either hop or push you outwards on dry pavement(causing the extra wear). The locker is designed to disengage on turns (depending on conditions) and engage when it feels slippage.
I personally would not waste the money on a locker unless you are sure that is the axle that you will run on for awhile
By the way my 38" tsl's have only 6K on them and are halfway worn down due to my locker
To answer your ?, no I would not weld my rear!

The locker is designed to disengage on turns (depending on conditions) and engage when it feels slippage.
If we are talking about an auto locker...like a detroit, lockright, etc. It only disengages when there is no force on the drive line (no acceleration or compression braking). You have to be coasting around turns for it to disengage. It doesn't "feel" slippage like a traction control system does.

dont bounce them, and keep the tire size to a 33" or under.
mine with 32's and a clutch

the handeling charistics (sp sorry) wont be any different than a auto locker.. you get used to it. you will on the other hand heavily wear your tires and bearings but thats the same with any "locked scenario"
