I was lookin' thru the archives on installing electric fans & i've got a couple unanswered questions...

How tha fawk should I disco the mechanical fan? (heh heh... fawkin' newbie:flipoff2:)

If I run a single electric fan can I run it thru a t-stat AND switch or do I even need both? I'd definitely hook it up to a switch...
To do both (tstat & switch) do I need dual fans?

You can run a single fan. Run the wire thru the switch to the t-stat to a relay to operate the fan. Just make sure the switch is always on (except for those water crossings) or you're gonna have trouble.

Take the mechanical fan off. its 4 bolts. put them back in though they hold the pulley on your waterpump

That's what I was unsure of.

I gotta change out the waterpump, too...

Most fan companies make thermostatic controllers...do a search on Google.com for Flex-lite

My electric fans are wired into the thermostat but I also have a override that allows me to turn them on whenever I want.

For a single electric fan I'd run a 94-95 taurus w/AC fan, they are 2spd, thin and move alot of air. Just extend the shroud on one side and bolt on.

I wire mine up with a thermostat and and a kill switch.

So far the low speed seems sufficent to cool my SBC crawling and on the highway its not even needed.

If interested I can get some picts of it...

Anyone else runing a Ford Taurus fan?

I did that on my Commando and I over heated on my way to rubicon. Good thing I brought my mech fan with me. I was able to do a quick swap in a Chevron parking lot!lol:D I had the fan mounted on the back of the radiator. Maybe it would be different if it was on the front.

the electric fans you can buy off the shelf in a parts store will not keep a v8 cool. i ran several different setups and none worked. i then got a duall 11" SPAL setup for about $200 and it works great. i have not had a problem wiht over heating since.

Went through the same thing, first electric I bought from Summit wouldn't even cool the 327 at idle...

Here's a couple of shots of the taurus fan install...

Crawling with the flex fan temp would go to 210-220
With the taurus fan on low crawling it holds 180

Having a good shroud to cover the full rad helps out alot.

Run the power through a relay...
- low speed draws ~10amps
- high pegs my meter a 19.9 amps
