: A dumbass question about beadlocks...
Rerard 07-22-2002, 02:26 PM Before you read this I wanna warn you its retarded, but im curious and I couldnt find the answer in a search.
On *another* site, someone said that 90-95% of people on the trail that run beadlocks, run tubes in their tires... Can someone explain to me why this would be necessary, do you think this figure is accurate?
I know a few poeple with beadlocks and none of them have tubes.
Jason M 07-22-2002, 02:30 PM no idea..
Travis Waldher 07-22-2002, 02:32 PM I know at least... maybe.. 10 people running beadlocks. None of them to my knowledge run tubes.
UGET IT 07-22-2002, 02:35 PM I dont know anyone running tubes in Beadlocks..........
HighHooder 07-22-2002, 02:36 PM running tubes with beadlocks would be sorta like taking a shower with your raincoat on wouldn't it???
that *other* site is :rainbow:
bigbene 07-22-2002, 02:39 PM Post a link to it so we can set 'em straight...
I don't run tubes in my beadlocks, I dont know anyone who does.
The old split rims that had a ring that some people called lock rings required tubes. Maybe he was confused.
MattS 07-22-2002, 02:44 PM The only reason I can even think of is because they are buying cheap beadlocks and they have developed leaks and this is their way of solving the problem. I have had Barts, Hummers, and champions and none of them leak. Stop going over there and you won't get confused!

Grandpa Jeep 07-22-2002, 02:52 PM How's this for a reason, if you run tubes, you don't have to worry about losing the inside bead. If you lose the inside bead without a tube, you're done. If you run a tube without a beadlock and the tire spins on the rim it will tear the tube up.
I have never run beadlocks so maybe losing the inside bead isn't that big of a problem, but tubes would solve it.
Tubes would remove the need for beadlocks in general. Burping the inside bead maybe, blowing it entirely.. nope never had that happen
Rerard 07-22-2002, 03:04 PM Is it a prerunner thing maybe?

I would think that if the tube burped out the inside a little you would have a serious risk of pinching the tube??

You're right. What do I know. I go tubeless.
synds9 07-22-2002, 03:54 PM don't baja trucks have a second tire that is almost flush with the rim incase they get a flat? i've seen it on off-road.com they shredded the main tire.. and it looked like a very small spare tire on the rim on the inside.. i thought it was pretty sick
1988YJ 07-22-2002, 04:05 PM I run tubeless 37x12.50 with no problem on my beadlocks.
Slagburn 07-22-2002, 04:35 PM I was judging in a small comp. this weekend up close with the rigs. A few came through my course and lost air as they went, enough to blow up little puffs of dust in fact.
Ya know what kind they were?
TRAILREADY'S
So much for the spendy beadlocks holding air theory, huh?
I had the same problem with my Allied's. I work at a tire shop and we use this goop made by Tech Products called, well, "Tire Sealer". Mostly it gets used on corroded aluminum wheels with chronic bead leaks. I painted this stuff on mine, on the back bead and the front flange, and haven't lost any air, ever, since.

Rerard 07-22-2002, 06:47 PM Ok now he says that he sees it on dragsters all the time... I dont know shit about dragsters so I cant say anything about that but even if that is true it doesnt matter because he said 'on the trail'.... I havent seen a lot of dragsters on the trail but maybe he meant in the mall...
2002 FX4 Ranger 07-22-2002, 06:53 PM I am the one who started it.
The post was originally who makes rock crawlers and then someone said that Bead Locks are made by trailready. Not going too far off topic huh?
But, then things turned to me explaining that Bead Locks are NOT DOT approved. Then no one had ever heard of DOT officers and was liek who cares. Then I tried explaining that BEad locks will loose air if not properly maintained and that the bolts have to be torqued every few hundred miles.
Now, I have been with Discount Tire Co in Orlando for almost 4 years and have dealt with a lot of different types of wheels. 90% of the guys I see running bead locks are also running tubes. Now, granted the guys with radial tires dont run tubes. But, not too many guys run Bead Locks with radials down here.
2002 FX4 Ranger 07-22-2002, 06:58 PM Retard ---- BTW, if you go and look at all f my posts, NEVER did I say what I see on the trails. The trails that we have here in FL do not require extremely low air pressure like rock trails would.
This is the Flatland of trucked in rocks and mud whompers.
Rerard 07-22-2002, 07:18 PM Well its an OFF ROAD site, why would you talk about dragsters and not say that? Sounds like back pedaling to me..

TONY K 07-22-2002, 11:00 PM Can't for the life of me think of any good reason for a tube on a 15 or 16.
But 16.5", 17", 20" wheels.....that's another deal.
16.5 no safety bead.
17" staight angle tire seat area.
20" 3 degree tapered tire seat area.
I really only have used tubes on 20" wheels. The 20" tires fall off the wheels when down around 3 lbs. So use a beadlock to keep the tire from spinning on the wheel and use the tube to hold air.
Get to Spyder...remove tube and go swimming.
Heat buildup for the tube would be my only worry, but who's gonna drive a beadlocked 20 down the freeway ??????
see ya,
tony k
badassjeepguy 07-22-2002, 11:23 PM i ran my trailreadys with no tube and no problems.... a few companies DID suggest that tube is a good move, couldnt see why, never tried it, dont see a need for it.... this is with a 15 inch rim
nomorejeep 07-23-2002, 07:26 AM if your running beadlocks you most likely want to run tubes inside the tires. so there is no need to take the tires off and clean the bead. from the "other" board that when the thread when to shit but kinda shit is that ?

You can tell me all about how I don't need to air down and how I should be running tubes. Nothing like somebody with a stock Ford Ranger explaining beadlocks and airing down
Scott@Rockstomper 07-23-2002, 11:29 AM The only people I know (or know of) who run tubes and beadlocks, are running tubes because they're running TUBE TIRES rather than tubeless. Lots of tires (drag tires especially, but also ag tires, most 20" military tires, etc.) call for tubes--if the tire doesn't call for a tube, don't run a tube.
I run my big-ol bias-ply 44's with no tubes (almost no air too) and beadlocks, 'cause if I didn't run beadlocks, I couldn't drive on my side. And I *like* driving on my side... that's fun. :)

I don't need spectators, so no need in you coming the pile.
I've used my Jeep as a daily driver. Fortunately I was smart enough to get an affordable daily driver so I could spend money on my rig. You should think of doing the same if your whining about having to drive your rig :shaking:.
I didn't have my truck when it was six months old. What you see now is my Jeep 1 year after I sarted to modify. I started the most recent build up six months after I moved here and finished in 3 months. In ~1 year I've been building my Jeep I've done 3 axle swaps (ford 8.8, HP60/14bolt) and geared/locked 2 sets of axles. I've also been through 3 different suspensions (2 SUA and 1 SOA) Don't forget about OBA and other junk. How do your feet taste? Sorry, I haven't been building mine forever :flipoff2:
About all that other drivel. It just makes you another "One day I'm gonna have" wheeler, and that doesn't hold much water in my book. Come back when you've built it and I'll give you some respect, whine about "I'm gonna build" and I'll laugh in your face

If youīre serious about off-roading, you DONīT use your trail rig as a DD. Itīs just not possible or practical... Itīs either broke from last weekend or being prepped / modified for next weekend. Can you understand that?!?!?

2002 FX4 Ranger 07-24-2002, 06:21 AM BillJ --- Unfortunately, being still in college does not let me have mutiple vehicles. Next year when I am done with school, I am either going to buy a small inexpensive sports car or a fullsize 2wd for a tow rig.
The D44 is sitting in my shop right now. I came out of the ranger I helped my friend build on REO's and 46x16" tractor tires with a 460 in it. You want pics, I will get them for ya. But, the only reason it is going to be till next summer that it goes in is b/c I cannot figure out how to do the steering and was hoping to see what Retard did on his. Then I am going to go from there.
My second truck was a 1978 F-150. When I bought it, it had 2 1/2 ton rockwells, 40" hawgs(THESE TIRES SUCK!!!), 400M, C6, and NP205. The truck would pull a house down but, for a DD, was not it. I then ripped the REO's out and replaced them with a 9" and D60 and lowered it onto 33x15.50's. Still bad for a DD and let me get over having a big truck and learned about function more than looks. The truck looked good and would go almost anywhere. Except the trails I run are narrow and that truck would not fit. That is why I went to the Rangers.
Well, hate to jump into the middle of this fine pissin' match y'all got going on, but back to the subject: I know lots of guys running tubes with MRT carbon fibers - primarily with Bigger Diggers, but some with Boggers also.

Holy crap.. can you say :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: ????
Scott@Rockstomper 07-24-2002, 10:16 AM I was debating on commenting on this thread any more... I may be progressing down the path to A-hole-ness, but ohwell. I'm too brainfried to work today anyway.
By the time I finished college, I'd built my 4x4 from bone-stock four-cylinder to EFI 5.0, 36's, lockers, etc. It had already been run in one serious competition during my junior year... didn't do so well, but it was a blast.
I also bought my first tow rig during my third year of college. No, Mom-n-Dad didn't fund it--they feared it. It was a POS '76 Chevy 3/4T 4x4--but it dragged my junk around, and ran most of the time. About a year after I graduated, I parted it out, 'cause it was just so ugly and worthless in one piece, I couldn't sell it. My next tow rig was scarier yet.
Daily driving on 44's. I do. Well, not daily, but I'd like to. My truck on 44's doesn't go fast enough (or have enough room in the "bed") to run business errands. I do regularly drive it to work, about 15 miles each way, and yes, it's inconvenient, but it's fun. Then again, I'm gradually getting more and more towards the "rollovers are fun too" end of things, so now my doors don't seem to fit so well any more. Ohwell. I know plenty of guys running Swampers on their daily drivers, from 33's through 44's. When you get to where you're running that big a tire, it becomes clear that a second vehicle pays for itself in short order, and in many cases, can be purchased for *less* than the cost of a set of tires. If you've gotta have a cushy ride for daily driving *and* a cushy trail rig... you shouldn't even think about beadlocks. The level of 'wheeling that demands beadlocks, will very rapidly de-cush a nice ride, so why waste your money on cush?
I also run beadlocks on the street. Daily. No tubes. I don't know a single person running tubes in beadlocks. And I can count eight or ten guys that I can think of offhand, running the same way, locally. Another 20+ not-so-locally. They're not illegal to run on the street. I already posted a reward for anybody who can find me a law (US State level, US Federal level, Canadian provincial, or Canadian federal) that says beadlocks aren't legal. It's been up, on this BBS, for months. Unclaimed. Guess why. Champion Wheel has been to court (check their website) two or three times, and they've won, every time, over beadlocks being street legal.

As for wheelin a daily driver, I dont think theres anything wrong with that and im sure most people here will agree with me. Im plan on wheelin my rig (44/9"/4.88/36s/4.0, soon Atlas2, yayaya its not on rockwells and 48's, stfu I dont wanna hear it) and driving it daily while I save up for my PSD

I just turned 22. I built another 4x4 with 40's when I was in highschool. My parents haven't helped me twist a wrench or buy a lug nut for either. As far as my truck now, it's mine, I built it, bought it and solely funded it. I run bead locks and air down to 5psi all the time. I've never dirtied the inner bead up or required a tube for it. Running a tube in a beadlocked wheel is ludicrous. It'd be like putting an air fitting on a driveshaft and pressurizing it like an air tank. What's the point? You'll get negative returns, just more to go wrong etc. Don't pull the "oh, woah is me. I'm young, I've got a shitty job and I've got no time to wheel or build my wheeler" bleeding heart story. If I can do it, so can you. My truck is my only truck. It's the one I drive every day to work, mud with and smoke Mustangs with. Sure, the 44" beadlocked corners don't handle the best at 65MPH and the truck corners like a loaded dumptruck with airbags, but until you drop your purse and realise what works well on the trail you'll think your 31's do fine, right? Compromise the grocery getter for something that will actually climb a curb marginally larger than a honda accord and you'll get the drift of how fun 4x4ing is.
PS. Don't snow the snow men, and tell us that tubes work well in bead locks, or you see 100's of em all the time.

As for 10,000 posts, I was a moderator here, and I post 90% of the time to help and answer questions, not like you to piss people off...damn jackass.
MR4WD 07-24-2002, 01:40 PM 90%? Or 09% I'm sure you made a mistake.
None the less, that doesn't make you a hero. The only guy (we're not sure about that) I'd like to continually piss off is you. I'll however call a truce, it's like picking on a 3 year old. And sheesh, don't call me a "damn jackass"... It's soooo... Offensive. You hurt my feeling.

The ranger was bought as some one;s project that they never finished. Body, fram, and axles. I grabbed the D44 and he sold the 9".

Rerard 07-24-2002, 06:30 PM Its not really technical... its 'wheels and tires'... and he works at discount tires so he knows everything about wheels, come on now :D

Read carefully the last phrase in the above tirade and youīll all see why "Whadya Think Uh Mu Truck" doesnīt get it. Heīs only got one "feeling" and itīs been injured...
If it ends up dying, do ya think heīll go away??:p

after all the negative opinions on his pile,[rightly so] he prob had to put a badage on that one feeling and suck it up, he is still here...why I guess he likes the abuse...much like a woman who's husband beats her...........he keeps coming back for more.............it's just not healthy:D I think he should try http://www.fellinghurtmudder.com

Well, you live down there so you obviously know. I'd imagine that perhaps that's your reason for being there? RIGHT? LOL :rainbow: LOLOLOL
None the less, this is a beadlock thread. I run beadlocks. I offered insight until some silly queer from brazil piped up. Post a picture of your truck. I could use a laugh, I'm sure. Now, me and my collective no feelings are going 4x4ing again (for the 4th day in a row!). Punch away at them keys!

Do you define that drivel you wrote as "insight"?? The only thing you mentioned about beadlocks is that you run them and that tubes in them would be ludicrous. BFD... There were only about 20 posts before you that said the same thing...
The rest of your tirade was a feeble and transparent attempt at self-praise. You should know by now that that type of stuff doesnīt play well on POR...

My truck is much smaller than yours, being a Samurai, so Iīm sure the first thing youīll prolly do is make some sort of stupid analogy. In any event, in terms of build-up quality and design, I GUARANTEE, yes GUARANTEE that your rig doesnīt even come close...
Go here if you wanna...

Youīll see that my rig has no absurdly tall lift blocks, as well as nuts and bolts which are in alignment. I also have rear brakes!!:flipoff2:

Look kid, itīs been fun verbally abusing you. Itīs fun to beat up on retards once in a while, but I canīt help feeling a little guilty. Itīs kinda like driving by a bus stop during a rainstorm and looking at the face of the guy as he gets soaked by the water you splash on him. Itīs funny as shite, but at the same time you fell sorry for the poor bastid...
cherokee4x489 10-14-2004, 09:51 AM the tubes you might think of is a inner bead holder there is a thing that holds the bead aginst the outer part of the wheel if you have been seeing pictures this thing is placed in the tire and could look like a tube but i have never known any one to use a tube
