I have spoken to the Forest Service and was told the fire guys will be meeting shortly and to call back on July 15th for an update on fire restriction planning. I'll post any info I get when I get it.

You can get a camp fire permit at any CDF fire station or any ranger station. Some rangers will have some with them but not all. They are also FREE!

You can try this if you can't make the ranger station before they close.
Anyone have a link to get your fire permit online? I found a PDF to download, but I want to make sure what every I carry is kosher with the local 50 on the trail.
EDIT: n/m http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/sequoia/passespermits/campfire_permit/campfire-index.html
I have talked with the Eldorado National Forest about those permits you can get on line. They do not like them, but do accept them. If you were checked for a permit and that is what you had they would re-issue one of there own, but you would not have a problem.
I also have that is writting.

I really like this web issue idea. It forces you to take a test instead of listening to an official’s voice that has repeated the same verbiage hundreds of times to the public. Myself, I kind of tune out those caned yarns and the voices that make it ever so clear they too are tired of saying the same thing over and over again to the public.
I wonder what the Tahoe thinks of these web issued Permits?
Last time I got a Fire Permit from the FS, the girl who I know well said she had to read off the yarn no matter how many time in the past I have heard it. I listened but really didn’t as I had heard it a dozen times before, I may have yawned afterwards. Taking the test required me to actually read the verbiage in my own time and reconfirm I was answering the test questions correctly. I think this is a good thing.

A "California Campfire Permit" is good through out ALL California National Forests and is generally recognized on California BLM Lands for the calendar(Dec 31st) year issued. "The permit is your agreement to follow the campfire restrictions and regulations in effect" at the time, quoted from the web site in SCHooch's post above.
It is your responsibility to not only follow the physical cautions of using a fire, but to also check to see if fires are allowed at the time and at your location. A check with the local managing authority will inform you if they are allowed.

I participated in a meeting about the TNF DEIS and at the end the issue of fire restrictions came up.
As of yesterday it looked really good. Because of a late rain and continuing lower temps and decent humidity numbers we are way ahead of where we were last year. This doesn't mean no restrictions but is encouraging in that we may see no restrictions continuing much later than in previous years.

Got an e-mail from the TNF. Fire restrictions will be going into effect on July 28th. I'm working on getting specific information but I would imagine the usual stuff. No campfires in the back country. Watch where you smoke. Welding and chainsaw restrictions possibly.

Fire Restrictions Go Into Effect on July 28 in the Tahoe National Forest
Nevada City…..Judie Tartaglia, Deputy Forest Supervisor for the Tahoe National Forest announces that fire restrictions will go into effect beginning July 28, Tuesday. “Recent hot, dry, and windy weather has increased fire danger,” said Tartaglia. “Many of our fire indices show that we are above historic fire conditions for this time of year and thus the need for fire restrictions. Abandoned campfires are the primary source of human-caused fires in the Tahoe National Forest. Please do your part by fully extinguishing a fire before you leave your campsite,” concluded Tartaglia.
Under these restrictions:
• Campfires and charcoal barbeques are only permitted in designated campgrounds and other recreation sites (in the metal rings/grills provided).
• Smoking is only permitted in an enclosed vehicle, building, developed recreation site or in a 3-foot area cleared of all flammable material.
• Internal combustion engines including OHVs can only be operated on roads or trails except for the Prosser Pit Off-Highway Vehicle Area.
• Possession of fireworks is illegal.
• In the backcountry, portable stoves and propane-type barbeques, including those that use gas, jellied petroleum or pressurized liquid fuel are permitted with a valid campfire permit. Campfire permits are free and can be obtained at any Forest Service, BLM or CALFIRE office.
“If you come across an abandoned campfire, please help us by putting it “dead out” and then reporting its location to the nearest ranger station,” stated Tartagalia. To report an abandoned campfire or for more specific district information, contact the Forest Service offices in Sierraville (530) 994-3401, Truckee (530) 587-3558, Camptonville (530) 288-3231, Foresthill (530) 367-2224, and Nevada City (530) 265-4531.
The personal wood cutting program this year will continue to operate as long as individuals have a valid woodcutting permit and follow the conditions on the permit.

By: Ann Westling, Tahoe National Forest
Nevada City , Calif. October 13, 2009 - Fire restrictions in the Tahoe National Forest are lifted today, Tuesday, October 13, 2009, announced Tom Quinn, Forest Supervisor. Cooler temperatures, higher humidity and recent rain enabled Forest Service officials to lift restrictions. Visitors can now have campfires in the backcountry with a valid campfire permit. As fall progresses however, visitors are reminded to be fire safe as the weather can turn warm, dry and windy. "Please remember that conditions can become fire-prone again and visitors need to be careful with fire and fully put out their campfire," advised Quinn.
This past year in the Tahoe National Forest, there were 46 lightning-caused fires that burned 13 acres and 37 human-caused fires for 33 acres.
For more information on fire restrictions, contact offices in Camptonville at (530) 288-3231, Foresthill at (530) 367-2224, Nevada City at (530) 265-4531, Sierraville at (530) 994-3401, and Truckee at (530) 587-3558. The Forest Service webpage can be accessed at www.fs.fed.us/r5/tahoe.
