i am building a eb buggy i dont know which 60 to buy i can buy a 79 hp 60 for 1000 or a 87 front for 800 besides the high pinion what are the advantages and disadvatages of each my plan was to use dana 60 in the rear that i already have but i also found a running driving 87 f 350 with a dana 60 in front 10.25 in rear a c6 a efi 5.8 for 1500 is the 10.25 too big? i plan on running 39.5 iroks

Buy the '79. The disadvantage is that the inners are neckdown where the '87 is not...but I don't see that as a big negative as we usually upgrade the axles anyways. The huge plus is that the '79 doesn't have the center way offset like the '87 does....this will make it easier to incorporate into your eb, as well as giving you tighter steering radius and better front driveshaft angle.

X2

The longer tube on the short side gives more options for suspension mounts, the 200$ more will save you lots of aggravation.

The major diffrence that is most commanly disputed is the knuckle joint type. The 79 will be a kingpin style wich is seemingly more desired. The 87 will be a balljoint style. The debates can go on for ever on wich is better. The kingpin will be relativley easier to beef up and cheeper to set up for hi-steer. It will also be easier to sevice and cheaper to. However, all lot of guys (including myself) went with Ball joint. Yes the hi-steer knuckles are hard to find and expsensive. Ball joints arent cheap either, but some Pro Crawlers run them and love em as well as a lot of others. Then you can debate axle shafts wich most likely overhaul to alloy or some upgrade so who cares. Id say its a bit of a toss but If i were the buyer Id go with the 79. I went with my BJ because it was 200 bucks. On the main pirate page fish threw the technical section and read the Dana 60 bible. You will find everthing you need to know there.

Ummm Ball joints didn't start until 92. 85-91 will have king pins.
I run a 85 in my B2 and link mount on the short side will have to be thought out. They are a nice axle when a 78-9 cannot be found or afforded.

i was leaning towards the 79 cuz of the high pinion but it has been years since i seen a 78 79 hp 60 i thought that there was less space between the center section and the knucke on the 78 79 but they have more space than the later ones i was confused by the dana 60 article in th article it says pinion centerline to knuckle for 85-91 about 3.5 inches more to drivers side than 78 -79 i read that as 3.5 " wider but it is actualy narrower

Dude :shaking:

How is that dispututed? Your info is just straight wrong. '87 is kingpin just like '79. Balljoints didn't come around untill @92.

Seems to me like the '87 running and driving truck for $1500 would out way the other options by far. But what do I know, just a chevy dude snooping around:p

Then why does my 1976 D44 have ball joints?

Because Dana 44s have balljoints all thru the years, Dana 30s under EB's have Kingpins and some years of Dana 60 have balljoints then some have balljoints.

LOL

Anyway. Get the 79 60. The more tube on the drivers side lets you mount links WAY easier.
a 10.25 rear is fine. IMO its better then a 60 rear, but a 70 is best IMO.
