I searched the other day and only found 2(old) threads on this swap--since 1971 cj5 axles are about as rare as hen's teeth I'm kind of leaning this way, but does anyone have any real good info on what to avoid and pitfalls----what gear ratio's are available for these things and what about upgrades---I know nothing about these, but I've found out that they are passenger side drop and close to the cj2a width----any help would be appreciated----chris

The FJ40 axles would be a tough upgrade if you can find them. I will absolutely garauntee there were more CJ5's produced than fj40's though so I would think the toyota axles more akin to the hens teeth.

I'm curious what jeep axles you are missing or cannot find? Have you posted an ad in the "wanted" forum? I know of lots of people (including myself) with early CJ axles that are languishing waiting to be parted with.

I have a 48 cj2a and I'm thinking I want to change the axles out to more modern set up- dana 44's is what I want--I've been looking for 3 weeks and haven't seen one set of axles for sale--here, ebay or craigslist that are passenger side drop that are the width I want---- I've heard that the fj40 axles would be a good way to go since I can't find the '70.5-'71 cj5 axles....

I've found a fj40 frame with the axles for $500---passenger drop 50" width or close to it---I don't know if that's to much or not--guy says it rolls and a brake replacement would be in order---I'm not sure what style they are at this point, but I've seen mention of birfields(is that right) when doing some research and then I've seen an upgrade axle kit mentioned---so there's the chance if I buy this I would want to do the upgrade if they were the birfield??? style--I think the guy said the frame and axles came out of an early 70's fj---

what would be the difficulty on the swap???

Toyota mini-truck axles would be great. Tough as nails and WIDE aftermarket support. The only thing would be the width, they are 55"-56" wide and the rear is centered.
