I have a 4speed TLC tranny...what do I need to get this installed in my 73 FJ40...will it bolt up to the 3speed t-case? I have a 4speed bell housing, do I need to use this housing or will the 3speed housing work...are the input shafts on the 3speed and 4speed trannies the same, ie...same clutch parts and flywheel? Are the shift forks the same on the trannies?
Help me out...
Just trying to get a temp solution for this summer before the 4.3/700r4 swap this winter...the crawl ratio on the stock 3speed tranny sucks...the 4speed is a little better
Thanks

Dave:

You need both the 2F bellhousing and a 4 speed Tcase. Frankly, I would'nt think its worth the temporary swap - the 3 speed Tcase has a lower low range than the 4 speed Tcase, which would largely offset the advantage of having a lower first gear ratio. No, I havent done the math - I'll let you do that! Check the LC FAQ, then see what the difference is.

It is an 18% reduction using the 3 speed case with the H42 4 speed.

Not worth it in my opinion, but there is a good thread going on the board right now about the parts needed to do the swap.

Actually there is a way to adapt a 4speed to the 3 speed case. It involves a Datsun wheel bearing and some other stuff I can't remember right at the moment. As stated above, the gear reduction might not be worth the effort.

looks like I'll just have to suffer thru the summer with the 3speed...I have an SM420, but it needs a rebuild, pops out of 2nd gear at higher rpm...I figure by the time I get the thing rebuilt...the adapter plate and clutch parts, I'll be into the thing at least $800 bucks...not to mention the driveline mods, does that $$$estimate sound about right? Probably makes more sense to just wait till I can find a 700R4...anyone got any idea what the crawl ratio would be with a 700R4 and 3speed case?

I think Dave needs to do a cost benefit analysis - yup, you can mate a 4 speed tranny to a 3 speed case, but at what cost? Dave has THIMB issues as it is (ask him what that means ;) ). Youre gonna need your Cruiser fund well stocked this winter for the V6 - 700R4 swap - there are lots of hidden costs. JMHO, Andy

I think you are seeing the light!

TThe first gear ratio of a 700R4 is about 3:1 (I believe you can get lower gears (like 3.25:1) - with the 2X factor of the auto tranny, the effective first gear is 6:1, which gets close to the 465 (6.5:1) and the 420 (7.05:1). Andy
